    This study assesses how horizontal inequalities between Israeli settlers and Palestinians living in the West Bank cause grievances among Palestinians transforming to violence towards the Israeli citizens. A scoring model tailored to Hebron's case is introduced to evaluate the line of argumentation by estimating the level of violence in the designated area. This method is based on expert interviews containing pre-surveys and a theoretical review. In a second step, the estimated level of violence is tested through data of Palestinian attacks against Israelis based on the Global Terrorism Database (1976-2018). A historical review of the Israeli settlement policy since 1967 substantiates the research. The results suggest that the applied mechanism of horizontal inequalities increases Palestinian grievances and encourages violence in Hebron. Thus, this work strengthens theoretical research of horizontal inequalities, grievances, and violence and offers a new (bottom-up) direction in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

    In 2016 Yosef Garfinkel suggested that J.L. Starkey, Director of the Lachish excavations, was murdered in 1938 by men sent by landowners of the mound due to an extended dispute between them and Starkey on payments for permission to dig on the summit of the mound. The present paper presents additional data which support the view that Starkey was murdered by bandits who came from the Hebron area.

    Das Zusammentreffen historischer Ereignisse, Mythen und Bräuche hat im geopolitischen Kontext des Heiligen Landes zu einer ungewöhnlichen Dichte von heiligen Stätten geführt. Aufgrund ihrer außerordentlichen religiösen Bedeutung sind viele dieser Orte zu Schauplätzen bitterster Auseinandersetzungen zwischen konkurrierenden religiösen Gruppen und Gemeinden geworden. Der israelische Pavillon der 16. Architekturbiennale setzt sich mit diesem komplexen und zugleich fragilen System der Koexistenz zwischen Kontrahenten auseinander, das sich im 19. Jahrhundert etablierte: dem Status Quo. Anhand von fünf wichtigen religiösen Stätten, die das räumlich-politische Phänomen des Status Quo veranschaulichen, eröffnet die umfangreiche Publikation eine zeitgenössische Diskussion des brisanten Themas.
