    Abstract This article examines the use and history of the wordplay μαθεῖν-παθεῖν in Greco-Roman literature in order to assess its use in the Epistle to the Hebrews. First, two important studies on the wordplay from the mid-twentieth century are examined in addition to recent Hebrews scholarship. Second, the article surveys Greco-Roman literature, including several texts not previously included in previous scholarship, to explore how this wordplay was used and developed. Finally, the use of μαθεῖν-παθεῖν in Heb 5:8 is investigated in light of its prior use in Greek literature. It is argued that in these two words, the author of Hebrews is able to memorably demonstrate that Jesus participated in the full human condition. This supports the larger argument regarding Jesus’ qualifications for the high priesthood and is put in conversation with his status as the divine Son.

    Although the use of rhetoric to interpret NT texts, even Hebrews, is hardly new, here I employ an unfamiliar, and so unused, source of Greco-Roman rhetoric, the progymnasmata (preliminary rhetorical exercises). They provide excellent examples of genres that form the skeleton and substance of the argument in Hebrews. These progymnasmata consisted of twelve to sixteen exercises of increasing difficulty, among which I focus on “comparison” (σύγκρισις) and “encomium” (ἐγκώμιον). Progymnastic rhetoric states that “comparisons” are made out of the “headings” of the “encomium.” Thus, one comparison is in fact two encomia, for example, Jesus and Israelite priests, each figure described according to traditional encomiastic patterns.

    Jody A. Barnard untersucht die Rolle der jüdischen apokalyptischen Mystik im Hebräerbrief. Die jüdische apokalyptische Mystik ist ein Phänomen, welches gegen Ende des Judentums der Epoche des Zweiten Tempels (einschließlich des frühen Christentums) aufkam. Ihr literarischer Ausdruck findet sich in der Apokalypse und verwandter Literatur, sie thematisiert die spirituelle Wirklichkeit des himmlischen Königreichs und die Erfahrungen der Menschen mit diesem Reich und seinen Bewohnern. Der Autor zeigt, dass der Hebräerbrief sich zahlreiche apokalyptische und mystische Themen zu Eigen macht und dass es Anhaltspunkte dafür gibt, dass dies nicht nur ein konzeptionelles und literarisches Phänomen ist, sondern aus mystischen Erfahrungen entstand. Die Kosmologie, Christologie und Soteriologie im Hebräerbrief gehören alle in den Themenbereich der jüdischen apokalyptischen Mystik und werden mit Bezug auf diesen Zusammenhang eingehend erläutert. Jody A. Barnard examines the role of Jewish apocalyptic mysticism in the epistle to the Hebrews. Jewish apocalyptic mysticism is defined as a phenomenon occurring in late Second Temple Judaism (including early Christianity), which finds literary expression in the apocalypses and related literature, and exhibits a preoccupation with the realities of the heavenly realm, and the human experience of this realm and its occupants. The author demonstrates that there are numerous apocalyptic and mystical themes appropriated in Hebrews, and that there is evidence to suggest that this is not merely a conceptual and literary phenomenon, but is born out of, and informed by, mystical experience. The cosmology, Christology, and soteriology of Hebrews all belong to the world of Jewish apocalyptic mysticism and are significantly elucidated with reference to this context.

    The Epistle to the Hebrews has been viewed predominantly through a Middle Platonic lens. The new covenant in Hebrews 8 has been viewed as a Platonic polemic against Judaism and a supersessionist text for Christianity. When viewed through a Jewish apocalyptic lens, however, Hebrews 8 stands less as a polemic against Judaism or a supersessionist text for Christianity than as a hope for people going through suffering and oppression. Moreover, an apocalyptic reading of Jeremiah 31 in its original context provides part of the background through which an apocalyptic reading of Hebrews 8 is made possible. To that end, I argue for a reading of Hebrews 8 through a Jewish apocalyptic lens and an understanding of the new covenant that coheres with such a reading.
