    The focus of fighting tyranny and the justifications of the consecutive wars in fantasy literature for children and young adults play a noteworthy role in the intertwinement of literature and its educational potential. This genre is filled with numerous images of violence, in particular different scenarios of war and its justifications. In the books war constitutes the final battle between good and evil, and thus manifests the protagonists’ ultimate moral decisions between these two forces. The following books constitute the corpus: C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia (1950-56), Susan Cooper’s The Dark Is Rising Sequence (1965-77), Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials (1995-2000), J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series (1997-2007), Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle (2002-11), Amanda Hemingway’s Sangreal Trilogy (2005-07), and P. C. Cast and Kristin Cast’s House of Night novels (2007-2014). Although not all the books feature wars, all display justifications for war and the imperative to fight tyranny. Located within an intersection of diverse critical theories, my thesis engages literary texts in order to reflect on their capacity to negotiate, challenge, subvert, and perpetuate values and power structures. Motif analysis forms the centre of this analysis. I deploy a varied approach to literary analysis, relying upon literary and cultural theories (especially theories of ideology) to understand the realizations of the different motifs. Through issues of character construction, (political) authority, religion, and the construction of difference, the reader learns much about the culture and values of the respective world. Furthermore, this analysis invites the reader to find parallels between the fabricated world and the real world, and thus transfer what s/he has learned from the texts his/her own world. Engaging in such a reading ensures the drawing of direct connections between the reality constructed in the books on the one hand, and politics, the construction of difference, religion, and just war theory in the reader’s world on the other. The content analysis leads to broader cultural messages, which comprise assumptions about gender, power, ethnicity, religion, and morality. This methodology emphasizes the relevance as well as the complexity of the books and their educative potential, and facilitates the analysis of the books as tools for the defence and perpetuation of Western values and culture.

    What does it mean to be part of fandom? What are the implications of being part of one in Latin America, in this new decade of the 21st century? To answer these questions, in this article we analyze the characteristics of a particular fandom: the one formed by Harry Potter fans in Argentina. More than twenty years after the publication of the first book in this British series, we are interested in how the local fan thinks and “constructs” him/herself, not only in their singularity but also as part of a community. To do this, our analysis focuses on the largest fan convention in the country: the Magic Meeting. Through an ethnographic approach, we describe an event in which fans exchange knowledge, experience and productions around their hobby to help show the ways in which culture is produced, circulated and consumed in Argentina in a globalized and digital world. ; ¿Qué supone ser parte de un fandom? ¿Qué implicancias tiene serlo en Latinoamérica en esta nueva década del siglo XXI? Respondiendo a estos interrogantes, en este artículo analizamos las características de un fandom en particular: aquel conformado por las y los aficionados a Harry Potter en Argentina. A más de veinte años de la publicación del primer libro de esta saga británica, nos interesa cómo se piensa y se «construye» a sí mismo el/la fan local, no solo en su singularidad sino como parte de una comunidad. Para ello, centramos nuestro análisis en la convención de fans más grande del país: la Magic Meeting. Mediante un enfoque etnográfico, describimos un evento en el que las y los fans intercambian conocimientos, experiencias y producciones alrededor de su afición para contribuir a mostrar empíricamente las formas en que se produce, circula y consume cultura en Argentina en un mundo globalizado y digital.

    Abstract ; Innerhalb dieser Arbeit wird der Einfluss des House Sorting, das Einteilen von Schülern in Häusern, in den „Harry Potter“-Romanen von J. K. Rowling untersucht. Es wird die These aufgestellt, dass im Zusammenhang mit den Hogwarts-Häusern Stereotypen gebildet werden, die einer klaren Abtrennung von Gut und Böse dienen und zum Ende der Buchreihe teilweise durchbrochen werden. Nach einer theoretischen Abhandlung über Stereotypen und ihrer Bildung wird auf die Struktur von Häusern innerhalb der Organisation von Internatsschulen eingegangen. Es wird gezeigt, wie die Häuser im Gleichklang zu britischen Boarding Schools auch im narrativen Text zu einem Gemeinschaftsgefühl, zu Rivalisierungen und zu einer gleichsamen Eintracht und Trennung von Schülern führen. Im Anschluss wird dargestellt, wie der narrative Text die Einstellungen gegenüber den Hogwarts-Häusern mithilfe von mehreren stilistischen Mitteln manipuliert, steuert und damit Stereotype hervorruft. Durch eine Analyse der Einführung jedes Hauses wird deutlich, wie Slytherin mit Voldemort, faschistischen Ideologien und dem Bösen assoziiert wird, während Gryffindor durch den symbolischen Gegensatz zu Slytherin zum endgültigen Gutem und Rechtmäßigem wird. Die Entwicklungen ausgesuchter, stereotypisierter Figuren, die sich in entscheidenden Momenten überraschend verhalten, brechen die Stereotype, die zu den Häusern gehören, leicht. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf Severus Snape und Peter Pettigrew, die mit unterschiedlichen Motivationen die Seite wechseln. Im Anschluss wird argumentiert, dass die Haus-Stereotypen am Ende der Buchreihe nicht abgelehnt werden, sondern weiterhin innerhalb der Zaubergesellschaft bestehen bleiben. Allerdings ist die Möglichkeit der Wahl ein wiederkehrendes Motiv in „Harry Potter“, welches deutlich macht, dass Lebensumstände keinen Einfluss auf moralische Entscheidungen haben. ; Abstract ; This work examines the influence of House Sorting – the act of dividing pupils into school houses – in the “Harry Potter” novels by J. K. Rowling. Within the novels, stereotypes in connection to Hogwarts houses are established. The stereotypes then serve as a clear distinction between good and evil and are partially rejected at the end of the series. After a theoretical investigation into stereotypes and their development, the work at hand focuses on the structure of houses within the organisation of boarding schools. It is shown how the houses in the narrative text lead to a sense of community and to rivalry among Hogwarts students – thus, similar to British boarding schools, both to unification and separation of students. Following this, it is outlined how the narrative text manipulates and guides the character’s and the reader’s attitudes towards the Hogwarts Houses with the help of stylistic means, thereby creating stereotypes. An analysis of the introduction of every house shows how Slytherin is associated with Voldemort, fascists ideologies and evil, while Gryffindor becomes the ultimate good and rightful by its symbolic opposition to Slytherin. The developments of selected, stereotypical characters who behave surprisingly in moments of choice partially break the stereotypes connected to the houses. The analysis focuses on Severus Snape and Peter Pettigrew who both change sides out of different motivations. Finally, it is argued that the house stereotypes as such are not rejected at the end of the book series but rather persist within the magical society. However, a recurring motif in “Harry Potter” is the possibility of choice, which shows how personal (living) conditions do not confine moral decisions.

    Recent scholarship in fandom studies explores power relations between fans and industry creators and intrafandom fans. The crux of the relationship between fans and industry creators is claims of ownership over reception and creativity. I explore this space through four fandoms: fairy tales, Harry Potter, The Mortal Instruments, and The Bold Type as representative examples of the tensions that stem from power tensions. This dissertation argues that fan texts and online social media interactions between fans and between fans and industry creators reveal a continuous negotiation between these groups to control ideology and reading and writing practices. I utilize literary critical, folklore, and fandom critical frameworks to research reception and writing practices. Each chapter contributes to questions of negotiated authority within the context of each fandom. The nature of these negotiations focuses on the participants: between fans is a communal negotiation and between fans and industry creators is a power negotiation over reception and representation. The chapters on The Mortal Instruments and The Bold Type focus on ownership claims over the universe between creators and fans. The chapters on fairy tales and Harry Potter focus on reading and writing practices negotiated between fans within the community. I argue that these claims to ownership and control are complicated because they are representations of culture, manifested in texts that can be owned through copyright, but the cultural ideologies and values cannot.

    Recent studies in psychology and neuroscience offer systematic evidence that fictional works exert a surprisingly strong influence on readers and have the power to shape their opinions and worldviews. Building on these findings, we study 'Potterian economics', the economic ideas, insights, and structure, found in Harry Potter books, to assess how the books might affect economic literacy. A conservative estimate suggests that more than 7.3% of the world's population has read the Harry Potter books, and millions more have seen their movie adaptations. These extraordinary figures underscore the importance of the messages the books convey. We explore the Potterian economic model and compare it to professional economic models to assess the consistency of the Potterian economic principles with the existing economic models. We find that some of the principles of Potterian economics are consistent with economists' models. Many other principles, however, are distorted and contain numerous inaccuracies, contradicting professional economists' views and insights. We conclude that Potterian economics can teach us about the formation and dissemination of folk economics - the intuitive notions of naïve individuals who see market transactions as a zero-sum game, who care about distribution but fail to understand incentives and efficiency, and who think of prices as allocating wealth but not resources or their efficient use.

    Märchen gehören zu den populärsten literarischen Gattungen. Die Märchenforschung bietet daher ein außerordentlich heterogenes Bild von Arbeiten zu Volks- und Kunstmärchen, zu volkskundlichen, psychoanalytischen und anderen, mehr oder weniger wissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen. Erstmals wird nun in diesem Band am Beispiel von 38 Autoren oder Sammlungen die Entwicklung des Märchens nachgezeichnet, es werden dabei seine Merkmale näher bestimmt.     Recent scholarship in fandom studies explores power relations between fans and industry creators and intrafandom fans. The crux of the relationship between fans and industry creators is claims of ownership over reception and creativity. I explore this space through four fandoms: fairy tales, Harry Potter, The Mortal Instruments, and The Bold Type as representative examples of the tensions that stem from power tensions. This dissertation argues that fan texts and online social media interactions between fans and between fans and industry creators reveal a continuous negotiation between these groups to control ideology and reading and writing practices. I utilize literary critical, folklore, and fandom critical frameworks to research reception and writing practices. Each chapter contributes to questions of negotiated authority within the context of each fandom. The nature of these negotiations focuses on the participants: between fans is a communal negotiation and between fans and industry creators is a power negotiation over reception and representation. The chapters on The Mortal Instruments and The Bold Type focus on ownership claims over the universe between creators and fans. The chapters on fairy tales and Harry Potter focus on reading and writing practices negotiated between fans within the community. I argue that these claims to ownership and control are complicated because they are representations of culture, manifested in texts that can be owned through copyright, but the cultural ideologies and values cannot.

Beide Blickwinkel - Wissenschaft und Fandom - kommen in einen fruchtbaren Dialog miteinander, der auch die queeren Qualitäten und Potenziale des Fantasygenres insgesamt aufzeigt.
