    Welfare and well-being have traditionally been gauged by using income and employment statistics, life expectancy, and other objective measures. The Economics of Happiness, which is based on people's reports of how their lives are going, provides a complementary yet radically different approach to studying human well-being. Typically, subjective well-being measures include positive and negative feelings (e.g., momentary experiences of happiness or stress), life evaluations (e.g., life satisfaction), and feelings of having a life purpose. Both businesses and policymakers now increasingly make decisions and craft policies based on such measures. This chapter provides an overview of the Happiness Economics approach and outlines the promises and pitfalls of subjective well-being measures.

    People's concern about their relative status is regarded as an explanation to the Easterlin paradox, which reports that happiness has not increased despite continued growth in average income. The strength of concerns about relative position varies across people. First, we examine the socio-demographic characteristics and values that lead to a strong relative concern. And then we comprehensively investigate differences in financial outcomes, health, happiness, and behaviors by the degree of relative concern. In particular, Korea is an appropriate country for this study as Koreans have experienced rapid economic growth and there exists severe status race in their education system and labor market. Using data from our experimental survey of 3,000 Koreans, we examine their preference for positional goods and behaviors regarding herding, status seeking, and altruism. Our results show that those who have stronger relative concerns are more likely to live in upscale districts and place economic values above non-pecuniary values, and, in reality, they have better financial outcomes. They also exhibit higher tendencies of overconsumption and conspicuous consumption. Their health, however, is worse than others, specifically in regards to psychological health. Moreover, overall happiness and satisfaction in every dimension are proved to be lower for those who have stronger relative concerns. In a series of hypothetical situations of our survey, they consistently show higher inclinations toward status race and herding but lower degrees of altruism or sympathy. As for policy implications, we discuss the following issues. First, we show Koreans' diagnoses of the reasons for their unhappiness and examine how relative concern affects such diagnoses. Second, we discuss government intervention to remedy positional externalities based on our survey results about people's perceived positionality of selected goods that have a negative influence on others' welfare. Third, we show that Koreans' relative concerns do not necessarily arise from their materialistic values and they are undergoing transformation of individual values toward post-materialism, which makes a room for remedial change of institutions that have led excessive social comparisons and competitions. Fourth, we discuss policy directions for reducing negative effects of social comparison in the context of contemporary Korea focusing on the education system and labor market reform. Last but not least, we suggest some examples of nudge ideas using people's relative concern for the whole society and the motivation of self-improvement via social comparison, which implies that relative concern can be made good use of as well.

    Seit Sokrates bildet die Frage "Was macht ein glückliches Leben aus?" den Ausgangspunkt der Entwicklung einer Vielfalt von Wohlbefindenstheorien. Den Kern dieses Aufsatzes bildet die Erörterung der Fragen, inwieweit das Konzept der empirischen Lebenszufriedenheit und die dadurch gewonnenen Korrelate einen Beitrag zur Beantwortung dieser Frage leisten und ob diese Antworten eine Wohlbefindenstheorie begründen können, welche die philosophische Theorie mit empirischen Ergebnissen verknüpft. Im Zentrum dieses Aufsatzes steht eine Diskussion der wichtigsten Wohlbefindenstheorien, ihrer Qualitäten, Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede. Einen Schwerpunkt bildet die Theorie der subjektiven Lebenszufriedenheit. Ich diskutiere Stärken und Schwächen des Konzeptes und stelle die wichtigsten Ergebnisse der empirischen Lebenszufriedenheitsforschung in einem Überblick dar. Im Ergebnis argumentiere ich, dass die Resultate der empirischen Forschung als Grundlage einer subjektiv-objektiven Wohlbefindenstheorie dienen können. Qualitativ hochwertige zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen, ein gesunder Lebensstil, eine ausgewogene Work-Life-Balance, der Einsatz für Andere, das Verfolgen von Lebenszielen und persönlichen Interessen bilden die Grundlage einer Wohlbefindenstheorie, die sich auf empirische Lebenszufriedenheitsforschung stützt.

    Tradicionalmente el PIB había sido el indicador utilizado para medir el nivel de actividad, el desarrollo global de la sociedad, el progreso y el bienestar. Pero nuevas demandas han ido surgiendo en el siglo XXI y el PIB ya no puede medirlas y tampoco orientar las políticas para su logro. Han comenzado a plantearse impensadas preguntas del tipo “¿Los gobiernos deben orientar sus políticas hacia el crecimiento o hacia la felicidad?”. Con el objetivo explícito de lograr un indicador que pudiera superar las limitaciones señaladas surgió la organización Social Progress Imperative que orientó sus primeros esfuerzos a la elaboración de un Social Progress Index que se esperaba fuera utilizado para “informar e influir sobre las políticas e instituciones en todo el mundo”. Se ha señalado que este indicador estaría fuertemente relacionado con el problema de la felicidad. Pero también se han ido elaborando indicadores más específicos de la felicidad y se sostiene que los mismos constituyen medidas adecuadas del progreso social. Probablemente el más reconocido sea el Gross National Happiness Index publicado anualmente a partir de 2012 en el World Happiness Report. Estos indicadores son analizados en el presente trabajo para períodos recientes con particular referencia al caso argentino. ECONOMIC GROWTH, SOCIAL PROGRESS AND HAPPINESS SUMMARY Traditionally GDP had been the indicator used to measure the level of activity, the overall development of society, progress and welfare. But new demands have been emerging in the 21st century and GDP can no longer measure them nor guide policies for their achievement. Unthinkable questions such as "Should governments orient their policies toward growth or toward happiness?" have arisen. With the explicit aim of achieving an indicator that could overcome the above mentioned limitations, the Social Progress Imperative Organization, directed its first efforts towards the elaboration of a Social Progress Index that was expected to be used to "inform and influence policies and institutions all over the world". It has been pointed out that this indicator would be strongly related to the problem of happiness. But more specific indicators of happiness have also been developed and it is argued that they are also adequate measures of social progress. Probably the most recognized is the Gross National Happiness Index published annually since 2012 in the World Happiness Report. These indicators are analyzed in the present paper for recent periods with particular reference to the Argentine case.     In Happiness for All?, Carol Graham raises disquieting ideas about today's United States. The challenge she puts forward is an important one. Here we review the intellectual case and offer additional evidence. We conclude broadly on the author's side. Strikingly, Americans appear to be in greater pain than citizens of other countries, and most sub-groups of citizens have downwardly trended happiness levels. There is, however, one bright side to an otherwise dark story. The happiness of black Americans has risen strongly since the 1970s. It is now almost equal to that of white Americans.

    In recent decades economists have turned their attention to data that asks people how happy or satisfied they are with their lives. Much of the early research concluded that the role of income in determining well-being was limited, and that only income relative to others was related to well-being. In this paper, we review the evidence to assess the importance of absolute and relative income in determining well-being. Our research suggests that absolute income plays a major role in determining well-being and that national comparisons offer little evidence to support theories of relative income. We find that well-being rises with income, whether we compare people in a single country and year, whether we look across countries, or whether we look at economic growth for a given country. Through these comparisons we show that richer people report higher well-being than poorer people; that people in richer countries, on average, experience greater well-being than people in poorer countries; and that economic growth and growth in well-being are clearly related. Moreover, the data show no evidence for a satiation point above which income and well-being are no longer related. -- subjective well-being ; life satisfaction ; quality of life ; Easterlin Paradox ; adaptation ; economic growth

    Many scholars have argued that once "basic needs" have been met, higher income is no longer associated with higher in subjective well-being. We assess the validity of this claim in comparisons of both rich and poor countries, and also of rich and poor people within a country. Analyzing multiple datasets, multiple definitions of "basic needs" and multiple questions about well-being, we find no support for this claim. The relationship between well-being and income is roughly linear-log and does not diminish as incomes rise.
