    Gabe- und Opferkonzepte profilieren in besonderer Weise die säkularisierende Transformation religiöser Konzepte, die in der östlichen Slavia anders und mit anderen Tempi verlaufen ist als in Mittel- und Westeuropa: In ihnen scheinen pagane Kulturpraktiken auf und werden reaktiviert, bleiben in einer sich atheistisch wähnenden Kultur religiöse Sinnzuschreibungen unterschwellig produktiv. Die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge verfolgen unter verschiedenen Grundannahmen und mit oft komplementärer Objektwahl gemeinsam die Frage, welche Bedeutung den Kulturpraktiken von Gabe und Opfer im russischen Sprachraum mit Blick auf Literatur, Musik und Kinematographie zugekommen ist und noch bzw. neu zukommt. <dt.>

This monograph exhaustively investigates the semantic domain of ‘gift’ in Ancient Hebrew, which comprises 28 substantives. The investigation firstly focuses on the syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations that determine the meanings of each individual lexeme and subsequently provides an overall picture of the developments and extensions of the whole lexical field across the different layers of Ancient Hebrew. The investigation sheds new light on the debated issue of the so-called sectarian Qumran writings, by demonstrating that they attest to distinctive patterns of lexical organisation that are not found elsewhere in Ancient Hebrew. The appendix finally discusses the feasibility of drawing concept related conclusions on the basis of linguistic data, thus sketching a possible map of the concept of ‘gift’

    "Both clothing and gifts in the ancient world have separately been the subject of much scholarly discussion because they were an integral part of Greek and Roman society and identity, creating and reinforcing the relationships which kept a community together, as well as delineating status and even symbolising society as a whole. They have, however, rarely been studied together despite the prevalence of clothing gifts in many ancient texts. This book addresses a gap in scholarship by focusing on gifts of elite male clothing in late antique literature in order to show, that when they appeared in texts, these items were not only functioning in an historical or 'real-life' sphere but also as a literary space within which authors could discuss ideas of social relationships and authority.
