    This book presents a refreshing new approach to avant-garde art by demonstrating that a genuine core of modernism manifests a positive, joyful outlook. In contrast to those who see disintegration and negativity as the most authentic artistic responses to this century's gloomy zeitgeist, Donald Kuspit and Lynn Gamwell present twentieth-century art that has emotionally and intellectually affirmed life. Lavishly illustrated, their book includes colorful images of paintings, sculptures, decorative arts for the home, and gardens In his essay, "Happiness, Health, and Related Anomalies of Avant-Garde Art," Kuspit characterizes most avant-garde art, such as Duchamp's "readymates," as psychologically adolescent - youthfully rebellious, destructive of the past, and emotionally unstable - but singles out certain rare artists, notably Matisse, as being avant-garde in the mature sense of joining a historical tradition, striking a balance between the self's pursuits of happiness and social reality, and acknowledging suffering while transcending it with positive feelings for life In "Arcadian Impulses in Avant-Garde Art," Gamwell focuses on the intellectual dimensions of health and happiness, noting the large role that nature has assumed as a subject of life-affirming avant-garde art. Certain artists who have been receptive to the broad intellectual climate of modernism - especially the secular, scientific revolution in our understanding of nature - have created therapeutic landscapes, gardens of love, and, most distinctive of the avant-garde art, abstract art that symbolically presents the new cosmology

    Jane Austen has been read as a novelist of manners, whose work discreetly avoids discussing the physical. John Wiltshire shows, on the contrary, how important are faces and bodies in her texts, from complainers and invalids like Mrs. Bennet and Mr. Woodhouse, to the frail, debilitated Fanny Price, the vulnerable Jane Fairfax and the 'picture of health,' Emma. Talk about health and illness in the novels is abundant, and constitutes community, but it also serves to disguise the operation of social and gender politics. Behind the medical paraphernalia and incidents are serious concerns with the nature of power as exerted through and on the body, and with the manifold meanings of illness.     In this study Joan Burbick interprets nineteenth-century narratives of health written by physicians, social reformers, lay healers, and literary artists in order to expose the conflicts underlying the creation of a national culture in America. These "fictions" of health include annual reports of mental asylums, home physician manuals, social reform books, and novels consumed by the middle class that functioned as cautionary tales of well-being Read together these writings engage in a counterpoint of voices at once constructing and debating the hegemonic values of the emerging American nation That political values flow from the daily exigencies of survival and enjoyment is one of the claims advanced by theorists of cultural hegemony. Broadening this assumption, the narratives of health presented here address the demands and desires of everyday life and construct a national discourse with directives on control, authority, and subordination

    Jane Austen has been read as a novelist of manners, whose work discreetly avoids discussing the physical. John Wiltshire shows, on the contrary, how important are faces and bodies in her texts, from complainers and invalids like Mrs. Bennet and Mr. Woodhouse, to the frail, debilitated Fanny Price, the vulnerable Jane Fairfax and the 'picture of health,' Emma. Talk about health and illness in the novels is abundant, and constitutes community, but it also serves to disguise the operation of social and gender politics. Behind the medical paraphernalia and incidents are serious concerns with the nature of power as exerted through and on the body, and with the manifold meanings of illness. 'Nerves; 'spirits' and sensibility figure largely in these books, and Jane Austen is seen to offer a critique of the gendering power of illness and nursing or attendance upon illness Drawing on modern - medical and feminist - theories of illness and the body, as well as on eighteenth-century medical sources, to illuminate the novels, this book offers new and controversial, but also scholarly, readings of these familiar texts

He shows how cultural fantasies of health and illness have come to be identified and defined by means of visual, aesthetic criteria - for the healthy is now seen as beautiful and the ill as ugly." The history of our perception of the 'beautiful body' is charged with anxieties about contagion and ugliness and, furthermore, entangled with political implications brought about by our interpretation of 'race' as a medical category. Sander Gilman looks at how nineteenth-century theorists collected medical and racial data from the shapes of noses, and at contemporary fears concerning syphilis, vividly personified in the diseased hero of Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera. He also scrutinizes Mark Twain's frank account of a visit to the Holy Land for signs of implicit prejudice about the health or illness of the resident Arabs and Jews.
