    "Despite a pronounced shift away from Eurocentrism in Spanish and Hispanic studies departments in US universities, many implicit and explicit vestiges of coloniality remain firmly in place. While certain national and linguistic expressions are privileged, others are silenced with predictable racial and gendered results. Decolonizing American Spanish challenges not only the hegemony of Spain and its colonial pedagogies, but also the characterization of Spanish as a foreign language in the United States. By foregrounding Latin American cultures and local varieties of Spanish and reconceptualizing the foreign as domestic, Jeffrey Herlihy-Mera works to create new conceptual maps, revise inherited ones, and institutionalize marginalized and silenced voices and their stories. Considering the University of Puerto Rico as a point of context, this book brings attention to how translingual solidarity and education, a commitment to social transformation, and the engagement of student voices in their own languages can reinvent colonized education"--

    Anhand der Biografie der Beiruter Zeitschrift Mawaqif (1968-1994) erzählt das Buch die bewegte Geschichte einer arabischen Intellektuellengeneration im späten 20. Jahrhundert. Hauptschauplatz ist die Stadt Beirut, der damalige Hotspot einer transarabischen Intelligenzija und ihrer Zeitschriftenpublizistik. In der postkolonialen arabischen Welt galt die politisch-literarische Zeitschrift, genau wie in Europa, als das Leitmedium des sogenannten Intellektuellen. In der vorgelegten Studie wird erstmals die historische Verflechtung dieser Sozialfigur mit der modernen arabischen Zeitschrift als einer 'Krisenmedium' und als konstitutiver Praxis dieses Intellektuellen diskutiert. Vor dem Hintergrund des Sechs-Tage-Kriegs, der palästinensischen Widerstandsbewegung, der iranischen Revolution, des Bürgerkriegs im Libanon und der Exilbewegungen der 1980er Jahre spiegelt Mawaqifs Lebenslauf den einer arabischen kulturellen Linken nach 1967 und das Scheitern ihres einst revolutionären Projekts

    As the editor of the Saturday Review for more than thirty years, Norman Cousins had a powerful platform from which to help shape American public debate during the height of the Cold War. Under Cousins's leadership, the magazine was considered one of the most influential in the literary world. Cousins's progressive, nonpartisan editorials in the Review earned him the respect of the public and US government officials. But his deep impact on postwar international humanitarian aid, anti-nuclear advocacy, and Cold War diplomacy has been largely unexplored. In this book, Allen Pietrobon presents the first true biography of Norman Cousins. Cousins was much more important than we realize: he was involved in several secret citizen diplomacy missions during the height of the Cold War and, acting as a private citizen, played a major role in getting the Limited Test Ban Treaty signed. He also wrote JFK's famous 1963 American University commencement speech ("not merely peace in our time but peace for all time"). This book is a fascinating look at the outsized impact that one individual had on the course of American public debate, international humanitarianism, and the Cold War itself. This biography of the vocal anti-communist and anti-nuclear activist's public life will interest readers across the ideological spectrum.

Sie argumentiert induktiv, psycho- oder physiologisch, evolutionär und demokratisch und lässt sich als frühe Form der empirischen Ästhetik verstehen. Ihr Transfer nach Deutschland in Rezensionen, Übersetzungen und Anschlussforschungen geht mit unwillkürlichen Anpassungen einher. Für die empiristische Ästhetik in der deutschsprachigen Aufklärung stehen nicht nur Namen wie Lichtenberg, Mendelssohn und Kant, Hamann, Herder und Merck, sondern auch die Übersetzer Dusch, Resewitz und Meinhard, die physiologisch Interessierten Haller, Platner, Lossius und Hissmann sowie die Leipziger Engel, Garve und Riedel, der Prager Meissner oder auch Enzyklopädisten wie Herz, Eschenburg und Schneider.When the University of Halle-Wittenberg founded the Interdisciplinary Centre for European Enlightenment Studies in 1993, it was following the destiny of its history as a centre of the early Enlightenment in Germany which affected the whole of Europe. Research foci of the Centre are at the moment aesthetics, discourses of history, cultures of learning and erudition, university history and not least the wide field of early Enlightenment as a field of experimentation and the foundation of cultural models for the Modern Age.The results of this research have been published since Autumn 1995 in the Centres' research publications series entitled University of Halle Series on the European Enlightenment. In addition, there have been relevant works produced outside the Centre. Two to four volumes are published annually (monographs, collected volumes, commentaries on sources)

    Band 23 der Sämtlichen Werke Christian Weises ist der erste der "politischen Schriften"; darunter ist im Verständnis des 17. Jahrhunderts Informationsliteratur zu verstehen, die auf das Leben und das Verhalten von Bürgern, in diesem Falle von Jugendlichen, Einfluss nehmen will. "Der Kluge Hoff-Meister" ist keine Darstellung des Berufsbildes eines Hofmeisters, der als Erzieher in Adels- und Bürgerhäusern des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts tätig war, sondern vielmehr eine Darstellung der Geschichte der Staaten Europas von ihren Anfängen bis hin in die unmittelbare Gegenwart des Autors. Weise liefert das Material, das der Hofmeister seinen Schülern vermitteln soll - eine einfache Aneinanderreihung von Namen, Jahreszahlen und kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen, ohne auf größere Zusammenhänge einzugehen. Das zweite Werk, "Der politische Academicus", zielt dagegen auf angehende Studenten; Weise erklärt, welche Verhaltensregeln diese beachten sollten, um in einer fremden Stadt in einer fremden Umgebung als 'klug' und 'manierlich' zu gelten, was für die berufliche Zukunft unumgänglich ist

By analyzing how the many turns to the archives shape the relationship of the historical to queer forms of knowledge, evidence, and worldmaking, this book theorizes the notion of turning in performative terms as a way of understanding how meaning gets produced through encounters with archival materials. Drawing on a range of perspectives-from postcolonial, performance, trans, disability, and cultural studies-this collection examines the archival turn within queer studies and how it has fostered historical imagination and knowledge. Together, the contributors provide personal and critical reflections on the allure of the archives, on that which resists archival capture, and on what is at stake for queer and trans lives in these archival turns"-- The contributors to Turning Archival trace the rise of "the archive" as an object of historical desire and study within queer studies and examine how it fosters historical imagination and knowledge.     Pindar mythologus and theologus -- Herakles looks back at the world -- The Dioskouroi in existential crisis -- Exaltation at Akragas : Herakles, the Dioskouroi, and Theron -- The isolation of Amphiaraos -- Asklepios and the limits of the possible -- An invitation. "This book recontexualizes Pindar's victory songs within the lived religious landscapes of the fifth century in order to demonstrate their theological force. Focusing on a set of mythical figures whose identities blur the boundaries between mortality and immortality (Herakles, the Dioskouroi, Amphiaraos, and Asklepios), it offers a new interpretation of the value of immortality in the epinician corpus. It demonstrates that epinician depictions of gods and heroes activate a world in which both the immortality of the gods and the mortality of humans constitute real and meaningful modes of existence, and shows that Pindar manipulates the ambiguous position of his boundary-blurring figures in a way which reasserts the categorical distinction between them. Pindar's depiction of these figures depends on an engagement with the identity of each figure in the lived experiences of his audiences and results in a contribution to-or even an alteration of-those shared conceptions. Through a series of case studies, each devoted to close reading of a single victory song, the book demonstrates how Pindar's depictions of these "in-between" figures responds to and shapes contemporary religious experience and revalues mortality as a prerequisite for the glory found in victory"-- Pindar's victory songs teem with divinity. By exploring them within the lived religious landscapes of the fifth century BCE, Hanne Eisenfeld demonstrates that they are in fact engaged in theological work. Focusing on a set of mythical figures whose identities blur the boundaries between mortality and immortality (Herakles, the Dioskouroi, Amphiaraos, and Asklepios), she newly interprets the value of immortality in the epinician corpus. Pindar's depiction of these figures responds to and shapes contemporary religious experience and revalues mortality as a prerequisite for the glory found in victory. The book combines close reading and philological analysis with religious historical approaches to Pindar's songs and his world. It highlights the inextricability of Greek literature and Greek religion, and models a novel approach to Greek lyric poetry at the intersection of these fields

    This collection of essays seeks to analyse historically these influences, connections, and impact from multiple points of view, such as - but not limited to - the links between war and rebellion, the issues of trust and religious violence, early modern university debates on war and peace, the problems engendered by intolerance and the difficult management of tolerance, the delicate matters of politico-religious accommodation and the implementation of peace in towns and contested territories, the reappraisals and changes in the narratives of military prowess and religious fidelity, the role of women in the religious conflicts in the 'long sixteenth century', the porous boundaries (imagined or real) which existed between 'enemies' in times of war and the issues connected to the cohabitation with the 'Other' in times of peace

    Von den wilden Anfängen der Frankfurter Schule zum neuen Denken: Das gepflegte Café Laumer in Frankfurt-Westend wurde im Sommer 1930 zum Treffpunkt einer illustren Gruppe: Von der geselligen Atmosphäre angelockt, trafen hier die Anhänger des Instituts für Sozialforschung auf den Kreis um Karl Mannheim und Norbert Elias. Die gegensätzlichsten Positionen prallten aufeinander, während in einem Punkt bemerkenswerte Einigkeit herrschte: In der Soziologie sah man die neue Königsdisziplin.     Anhand der Biografie der Beiruter Zeitschrift Mawaqif (1968-1994) erzählt das Buch die bewegte Geschichte einer arabischen Intellektuellengeneration im späten 20. Jahrhundert. Hauptschauplatz ist die Stadt Beirut, der damalige Hotspot einer transarabischen Intelligenzija und ihrer Zeitschriftenpublizistik. In der postkolonialen arabischen Welt galt die politisch-literarische Zeitschrift, genau wie in Europa, als das Leitmedium des sogenannten Intellektuellen. In der vorgelegten Studie wird erstmals die historische Verflechtung dieser Sozialfigur mit der modernen arabischen Zeitschrift als einer 'Krisenmedium' und als konstitutiver Praxis dieses Intellektuellen diskutiert. Vor dem Hintergrund des Sechs-Tage-Kriegs, der palästinensischen Widerstandsbewegung, der iranischen Revolution, des Bürgerkriegs im Libanon und der Exilbewegungen der 1980er Jahre spiegelt Mawaqifs Lebenslauf den einer arabischen kulturellen Linken nach 1967 und das Scheitern ihres einst revolutionären Projekts

    An ambitious revisionist history of naturalization as a creative mechanism for national expansion.Before borders determined who belonged in a country and who did not, lawyers and judges devised a legal fiction called naturalization to bypass the idea of feudal allegiance and integrate new subjects into their nations. At the same time, writers of prose fiction were attempting to undo centuries of rules about who could-and who could not-be a subject of literature. In Before Borders, Stephanie DeGooyer reconstructs how prose and legal fictions came together in the eighteenth century to dramatically reimagine national belonging through naturalization. The bureaucratic procedure of naturalization today was once a radically fictional way to create new citizens and literary subjects.Through early modern court proceedings, the philosophy of John Locke, and the novels of Daniel Defoe, Laurence Sterne, Maria Edgeworth, and Mary Shelley, DeGooyer follows how naturalization evolved in England against the backdrop of imperial expansion. Political and philosophical proponents of naturalization argued that granting foreigners full political and civil rights would not only attract newcomers but also better attach them to English soil. However, it would take a new literary form-the novel-to fully realize this liberal vision of immigration. Together, these experiments in law and literature laid the groundwork for an alternative vision of subjecthood in England and its territories.Reading eighteenth-century legal and prose fiction, DeGooyer draws attention to an overlooked period of immigration history and compels readers to reconsider the creative potential of naturalization "Bringing together eighteenth-century legal discourse and prose fiction, the author gives a cross-disciplinary account of immigration history.     Wie kam es dazu, dass das als Technikmuseum gegründete Deutsche Bergbau-Museum Bochum (DBM) heute neben weiteren Sammlungsbereichen auch über eine Sammlung von Gemälden, Grafiken und Plastiken verfügt? Der Frage nach der Genese und der historischen Funktion dieser Kunstsammlung spürt das Buch anhand der Institutions- und Sammlungsgeschichte des Hauses nach. Dabei liegt der Fokus auf den Motiven und Handlungen der Akteur:innen des Museums in der Amtszeit des Gründungsdirektors, Dr.-Ing. Dr. h. c. Heinrich Winkelmann (1928-1966). Schriftliche Überlieferungen zeigen, dass Winkelmann sich berufen fühlte, regulierend in die Kunstszene einzugreifen. Anhand von Sammlungs- und Archivforschung wird deshalb außerdem untersucht, welche Positionen der Gründungsdirektor in Hinblick auf die Ikonografie von Bergleuten in der bildenden Kunst vertrat und inwiefern sich seine kulturpolitischen Bemühungen in der heutigen Kunst-Sammlung des DBM materialisiert haben

    In einer virtuellen Rekonstruktion werden der Sammlungsort der Universitätsbibliothek im Juleum zu Helmstedt, seine Ausstattung, die Objektsammlung und historische Schriftstücke im Bibliotheksarchiv erforscht. Der Name des einzigartigen Renaissancegebäudes erinnert an Herzog Julius, Gründer der Universität und der Hofbibliothek in Wolfenbüttel. Neu entdeckte Architekturzeichnungen von Georg Christoph Sturm zeigen, dass die 1759 eingerichtete Saalbibliothek ältere Bibliotheksräume ersetzte. Seine Raumkonzepte wurden zusammen mit handschriftlichen Inventaren, Bibliotheksordnungen, Katalogen und Korrespondenzen archiviert. Die Analyse der Dokumente zur Wissensorganisation wird in dieser Studie mit Ergebnissen zur Materialität und Benutzungsgeschichte historischer Hand- und Druckschriften verknüpft - so erhalten soziale Praktiken schärfere Konturen. Als die Universität 1810 geschlossen wurde, standen in der Saalbibliothek etwa 24.000 Bücher aus Nachlässen oder säkularisierten Klöstern. Hinzu kamen Belegexemplare oder Ankäufe bei Auktionen. Beschriebene oder erhaltene Gemälde, Münzen, Kuriositäten und Herbarien sind zur interdisziplinären Erforschung der Gelehrtenkultur und institutionellen Sammlungspraxis von besonderem Interesse

    Die südostasiatische Flüchtlingskrise schockierte in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren die Weltbevölkerung und führte zu riesigen Aufnahmeprogrammen. Von den europäischen Staaten nahm Frankreich in dieser Zeit die meisten Flüchtlinge auf. Für diese Initiative waren die Verflechtungen von humanitären Aktivisten und Aktivistinnen, dem französischen Nationalstaat sowie innenpolitische Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Konservativen und Linken von zentraler Bedeutung. Laura Wollenweber stellt das historische Zusammenwirken dieser Aspekte heraus und legt zugleich dar, welche herausragende Stellung humanitäre Empathie und globale Menschenrechtsdiskurse sowie rassistische Denkmuster aus der Kolonialzeit für den Aufnahmeprozess besassen. Darüber hinaus wird deutlich, wie die Aufnahme der Flüchtlinge aus dem ehemaligen Indochina die heutige französische Wahrnehmung von Flucht und Migration prägte.

    In den Auseinandersetzungen des 16. Jahrhunderts um Kirche und zentrale Glaubensfragen ist der Diskurs der reformatorischen Bewegungen von einem Bedeutungszuwachs apokalyptischer Deutungsschemata geprägt. Die Kritik an Kirche und kirchlichen Institutionen, aber auch die eigene Position wurden entlang endzeitlicher Deutungen exegetisch legitimiert: Identifikationen von gegenwärtigen und historischen Ereignissen, Personen und Personengruppen anhand apokalyptischer Bilder wurden aus der für die eigene Bewegung beanspruchten Perspektive der Rechtgläubigkeit argumentiert. Die dadurch entstandene apokalyptische Gegenwartsdeutung speiste sich vorrangig aus der Bibel, allerdings wurden auch andere Quellen wie astrologische und visionäre Weissagungen verwendet. Insbesondere die darin manifestierten unterschiedlichen Auffassungen von Exegese, Offenbarung und Prophetie trugen zu einem endzeitlichen Diskurs bei, der zwischen der diskursmächtigen lutherischen Bewegung und marginalisierten reformatorischen Richtungen geführt wurde und Gegenstand dieser diskursanalytischen und kulturwissenschaftlichen Untersuchung ist

    Europa ist wie kein anderer Kontinent ein Erdteil vielfältigster Nationen, Sprachen und Kulturen – und wie kein anderer einer des Austausches und des Perspektivenwechsels. Das Paradigma des „Dazwischen“ – des Transnationalen, Transkulturellen und Transdisziplinären – gewann im 21. Jahrhundert in der Geschichtsschreibung eine immense Bedeutung. Doch auch die autobiographische Wende lässt sich nicht mehr aus der Historiografie wegdenken: Die Transkulturalität und Mehrstaatlichkeit ist für viele Historikerinnen und Historiker Grundlage ihrer intellektuellen wie institutionellen Biografien geworden: Die Autor:innen des Bandes, die aus 10 Nationen stammen, verkörpern dies in ihrer eigenen Lebenswirklichkeit. Die Wissenschaft zu Zwischenwelten – zu geteilten Erinnerungskulturen, Imperien und multikulturellen Gesellschaften – wird somit selbst zwischen Welten gedacht, gemacht und geschrieben.

Looking at writers with scientific, literary and theological interests, from the shoemaker mystic, Jacob Boehme to John Milton, from Robert Boyle to Margaret Cavendish, and from Thomas Browne to the fiery prophet, Anna Trapnel, Kevin Killeen shows how seventeenth-century writings redeployed the rich resources of the ineffable and the apophatic--what cannot be said, except in negative terms--to think about natural philosophy and the enigmas of the natural world"--
