    "Telling America's Story to the World argues that state and state-affiliated cultural diplomacy contributed to the making of postwar US literature. Highlighting the role of liberal internationalism in US cultural outreach, I contend that the state mainly sent authors like Ralph Ellison, Robert Lowell, William Faulkner, Langston Hughes, and Maxine Hong Kingston overseas not just to demonstrate the achievements of US civilization but also to broadcast an American commitment to international cross-cultural connection. Those writers-cum-ambassadors may not have helped the state achieve its propaganda goals-indeed, this rarely proved the case-but they did find their assignments an opportunity to ponder the international meanings and possibilities of US literature. For many of those figures, courting foreign publics inspired a reevaluation of the scope and form of their own literary projects. Testifying to the inadvertent yet integral role of cultural diplomacy in the worlding of US letters, works like The Mansion (1959), Life Studies (1959), "Cultural Exchange" (1961, 1967), Tripmaster Monkey: His Fake Book (1989), and Three Days Before the Shooting... (2010) reimagine the literary in a mobile, global, and distinctly political register"--

    Entering the Soviet Literary Orbit, early 1920s-mid-1950s -- The Afro-Asian Writers Association (1958-1991) and Its Literary Field -- "The Links That Bind Us": Solidarity Narratives in Third-Worldist Fiction -- The Tashkent Film Festival (1968-1988) as a Contact Zone -- "Brothers!": Solidarity Documentary Film "A reconstruction of Cold War-era cultural networks between the Second and Third Worlds that offers a compelling genealogy of contemporary postcolonial studies. Would there have been a Third World without the Second? Perhaps, but it would have looked very different. Although most histories of these geopolitical blocs and their constituent societies and cultures are written in reference to the West, the interdependence of the Second and Third Worlds is evident not only from a common nomenclature but also from their near-simultaneous disappearance around 1990. From Internationalism to Postcolonialism addresses this historical blind spot by recounting the story of two Cold War-era cultural formations that claimed to represent the Third World project in literature and cinema: the Afro-Asian Writers Association (1958-1991) and the Tashkent Festival for African, Asian, and Latin American Film (1968-1988). The inclusion of writers and filmmakers from the Soviet Caucasus and Central Asia and extensive Soviet support aligned these organizations with Soviet internationalism. While these cultural alliances between the Second and the Third World never achieved their stated aim--the literary and cinematic independence of the literatures and cinemas of these societies from the West--they did forge what Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o called "the links that bind us," along which now-canonical postcolonial authors, texts, and films could circulate across the non-Western world until the end of the Cold War. In the process of this historical reconstruction, From Internationalism to Postcolonialism inverts the traditional relationship between Soviet and postcolonial studies: rather than studying the (post-) Soviet experience through the lens of postcolonial theory, it documents the multiple ways in which that theory and its attendant literary and cinematic production have been shaped by the Soviet experience."

    HAUPTBESCHREIBUNGWerke der Science-Fiction-Literatur wurden unter diesem Gattungsbegriff ab den zwanziger Jahren des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts in den USA in preiswerten Magazinen publiziert, die sich auf Unterhaltungsliteratur spezialisiert hatten. Allerdings gab es Werke, die als Science Fiction eingeordnet können, bereits wesentlich früher. In den deutschsprachigen Ländern hatten ab den fünfziger Jahren während einiger Jahrzehnte Heftreihen eine ähnliche Bedeutung wie in Amerika vorher die Pulpmagazine. Die wichtigsten darunter waren die unter den Namen Utopia und Terra von den Verlagen Pabel und Moewig publizierten Reihen. Neben vielen Einzelwerken gab es in diesen auch eine große Anzahl von Serien mit gleichbleibenden Hauptpersonen oder mit einem gemeinsamen Hintergrund.In diesem Buch werden in fünf Teilen die in den Utopia- und Terra-Reihen erschienenen Sub- und Miniserien vorgestellt.- Nach zwei einleitenden Kapiteln zur Geschichte der Science Fiction als eigenständiges Genre und zur Bedeutung der Utopia- und Terra-Reihen werden in den Kapiteln 3–13 die Serien deutschsprachiger Autoren betrachtet, in den Kapiteln 14–27 Serien englischsprachiger Autoren. Die Kapitel 28–30 beleuchten die berühmten Fernseh- und Filmserien Raumschiff Orion, Raumschiff Enterprise und Planet der Affen.Es werden sowohl Serien vorgestellt, die komplett in Utopia oder Terra publiziert wurden, aber auch solche, die durch Ein- und Ausgliederungen teilweise auch als eigenständige Serien herauskamen. Schließlich werden jene Serien gesamtheitlich betrachtet, von denen nur einzelne Romane in den beiden Reihenkomplexen erschienen sind, die Mehrzahl aber in Buch- oder Taschenbuchausgaben.Eine Fülle von Zitaten und Querverweisen lässt bei Kennern Erinnerungen hochkommen, der Blick richtet sich aber auch auf manche bemerkenswerte Details über die Autoren.- -Die Werke werden kritisch betrachtet, auch im Vergleich verschiedener Ausgaben und dabei insbesondere auch der Übersetzungen fremdsprachiger Texte. Die umfangreichen Bibliografien zu den einzelnen Kapiteln sind zur Hilfestellung für Sammler, aber auch für wissenschaftlich Tätige gedacht. Das Buch beleuchtet eine wichtige Periode in der deutschen SF-Geschichte.

    "Consumption and Gender in Southern Europe since the Long 1960s offers an in-depth analysis of the relationship between gender and contemporary consumer cultures in post-authoritarian Southern European societies. The book sees a diverse group of international scholars from across the social sciences draw on 14 original case studies to explore the social and cultural changes that have taken place in Spain, Portugal and Greece since the 1960s. This is the first scholarly attempt to look at the countries' similar political and socioeconomic experiences in the shift from authoritarianism to democracy through the intersecting topics of gender and consumer culture. This comparative analysis is a timely contribution to the field, providing much needed reflection on the social origins of the contemporary economic crisis that Spain, Portugal and Greece have simultaneously experienced. Bringing together past and present, the v. elaborates on the interplay between the current crisis and the memory of everyday life activities, with a focus on gender and consumer practices.     Entering the Soviet Literary Orbit, early 1920s-mid-1950s -- The Afro-Asian Writers Association (1958-1991) and Its Literary Field -- "The Links That Bind Us": Solidarity Narratives in Third-Worldist Fiction -- The Tashkent Film Festival (1968-1988) as a Contact Zone -- "Brothers!": Solidarity Documentary Film "A reconstruction of Cold War-era cultural networks between the Second and Third Worlds that offers a compelling genealogy of contemporary postcolonial studies. Would there have been a Third World without the Second? Perhaps, but it would have looked very different. Although most histories of these geopolitical blocs and their constituent societies and cultures are written in reference to the West, the interdependence of the Second and Third Worlds is evident not only from a common nomenclature but also from their near-simultaneous disappearance around 1990. From Internationalism to Postcolonialism addresses this historical blind spot by recounting the story of two Cold War-era cultural formations that claimed to represent the Third World project in literature and cinema: the Afro-Asian Writers Association (1958-1991) and the Tashkent Festival for African, Asian, and Latin American Film (1968-1988). The inclusion of writers and filmmakers from the Soviet Caucasus and Central Asia and extensive Soviet support aligned these organizations with Soviet internationalism. While these cultural alliances between the Second and the Third World never achieved their stated aim--the literary and cinematic independence of the literatures and cinemas of these societies from the West--they did forge what Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o called "the links that bind us," along which now-canonical postcolonial authors, texts, and films could circulate across the non-Western world until the end of the Cold War. In the process of this historical reconstruction, From Internationalism to Postcolonialism inverts the traditional relationship between Soviet and postcolonial studies: rather than studying the (post-) Soviet experience through the lens of postcolonial theory, it documents the multiple ways in which that theory and its attendant literary and cinematic production have been shaped by the Soviet experience."
