The term Scapigliatura (Eng. tousled) refers to the fact that this first Italian avant-garde is a movement marked by the crisis. The 19th century is characterized by revolutions, wars, crisis and upheavals. Although the Risorgimento has been completed in 1861, many questions and problems still remaind unsolved. Hence the literature of the Scapigliati is under the influence of all the impressions surrounding the unification of Italy and the following questions arise: How is the historical and social environment and crisis reflected in the literary works of the Scapigliati? Which devices are used to depict the crisis in the texts? The questions are discussed on the basis of three texts (“Storia di una gamba”, “La lettera u” and “Uno spirito in un lampone”, all three narrations were first published in 1869) written by Iginio Ugo Tarchetti. The socio-historical literary theory and the thesis that literature is mimesis builds the theoretical background of the analysis. For a better understanding also a general overview of the Scapigliatura, also with attention to the crisis, and an overview of the historical events and facts of the 19th century is given. In order to define the term crisis, which is used in the thesis, a discussion of the term with regard to linguistics, sociology and philosophy follows. The results of the textual analysis are that a wide range of metaphors and symbols are used to present the mood of crisis of the 19th century, especially of the 1860ies. Some of the methods used by the author of the three exemplary texts are pathologization, physicality, illness, death, dying, hysteria, insanity, love between man and woman, ambivalence, pacifism and anti-militarism.
