Jahrhundert als ein zentraler, teilweise hoch ideologisierter Projektionsraum für die deutsche Identitätsfindung und -konstruktion. Auch nach Abflauen des traditionellen Philhellenismus ist der Bezug auf dieses Land unter veränderten Vorzeichen aktuell: Nietzsches Tragödienschrift, die Arbeiten von Jacob Burckhardt und anderen Autoren bilden den Hintergrund dieser Versuche, sich einer immer noch als maßgeblich erachteten Kultur anzunähern. Dabei kommt gerade der Reiseliteratur eine besondere Bedeutung zu, da sie besondere Strategien der Authentisierung und Beglaubigung ermöglicht. Diese Studie untersucht deutschsprachige Reiseberichte über Griechenland aus dem Zeitraum von 1908 bis 1962, den Erscheinungsjahren der Texte von G. Hauptmann und W. Koeppen. Erstmals wird ein wesentlicher Bestandteil des deutschen Griechenlanddiskurses zugänglich gemacht, in übergreifenden Strömungen verortet und eingehend analysiert: Die Bandbreite reicht von den Subjektivitätsentwürfen der Jahrhundertwende (Hauptmann, Hofmannsthal) über die politisch akzentuierten Reiseberichte aus der Weimarer Republik und dem Dritten Reich (Kästner) bis hin zu den skeptischen Distanzierungen der Nachkriegsjahre (Koeppen)

    "The Mediterranean region of Liguria, where the Maritime Alps sweep down to the coasts of northwest Italy and southeast France, the Riviera, marks the intersection of two of Europe's major cultural landscapes. Remote, liminal, compact, and steep, the terrain has influenced many international authors and artists. In this study, Martina Kolb traces Liguria's specific impact on the works of three seminal German-writing modernists - Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, and Gottfried Benn - whose encounters with Ligurian lands and seas led to an innovative geopoetic fusion of word and world Kolb examines each of these authors' acquired affinities with Ligurian and Provençal landscapes and seascapes, revisiting and reassessing the long tradition of northern longing for a Mediterranean south. She also shows how Freud and Benn followed in the footsteps of Nietzsche in his most prolific years, a topic which has received little critical attention to date.     This volume of essays examines the perceived rift between the British and German intellectual and cultural traditions before 1914 and how the resultant war of words both reflects and helped determine historical, political, and, ultimately, military events. This vexed symbiosis is traced first through a survey of popular fiction, from alarmist British and German "invasion novels" to the visions of Erskine Childers and Saki and even P.G. Wodehouse; contrastingly, the "mixed-marriage novels" of von Arnim, Spottiswoode, and Wylie are considered. Further topics include D. H. Lawrence's ambivalent relationship with Germany, Carl Sternheim's coded anti-militarism, H. G. Wells's and Kurd Lasswitz's visions of their countries under Martian invasion, Nietzsche as the embodiment of Prussian warmongering, and the rise in Germany of anglophobic, anti-Spencerian evolutionism. Case histories of the positions of German and English academics in regard to the conflict round out the volume.
