Differences in time allocation enlighten patterns of gendered poverty. This thesis disentangles the interlinked nature of deprivations in leisure time and income as well as income inequality and carbon emissions. Regressions beyond the mean shed light on the strength of their dependence, which influences vulnerability to poverty and potentials for a sustainable future. The first essay of this dissertation sets out that unpaid responsibilities need to be done to sustain a family. Complex processes of reciprocal causality channel women into unpaid work, resulting in reduced participation in m...

Understanding why women are less financially literate than men is crucial for developing effective policies that decrease gender inequalities and improve women's financial literacy, agency and empowerment. Accordingly, in this paper, we adopt a multidimensional approach to measure financial literacy; rather than focusing solely on financial knowledge, as most empirical work has done, we also take into account what has been referred to in the literature as financial behavior and financial attitude. We analyze financial capability data from Argentina, Chile and Paraguay and consider the answers given to 27 questions covering the three domains mentioned above. We find that there are statistically significant gender differences in these countries, which we confirm through extensive econometric analysis. We also conduct a traditional Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition, which indicates that the respective role played by the "explained" and "unexplained" part varies across countries.

In contrast to most prior studies of gender inequality focusing on a specific country or a specific year, this paper uses cross-nationally comparable data from the Luxembourg Income Study (LIS) to examine the impacts of wage premiums in male- and female-dominated industries and education levels on gender inequality in five developed countries- the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland, and Belgium from 2004 to 2017. To the best of our knowledge, there are no attempts in the prior empirical literature studying the effects of wage premiums in male- and female-dominated industries on gender inequality. To guarantee continuity and stability, we run the regression year by year separately for 14 consecutive periods for each of five advanced countries. The timeline covers the before, during, and after the great recession to rule out the possible effects of historical contingency. Thus, this is the first empirical paper to investigate the causal relationship between male- and female-dominated industries and gender inequality across counties over a continuous period. We raise and answer three research questions: (1) Do the wage premiums among male- and female-dominated industries affect the gender wage gap? (2) Is there a cross-country variation in the relationship between education levels and the gender wage gap? (3) Is there an impact of education levels on the gender employment gap? As for empirical analysis, for the first two questions, we run the multivariate linear regression; for the third question, we estimate the probit model, marginal effects, and the delta method standard errors. We find that: 1) There is a significant correlation between the wage premiums in female- and male-dominated industries and gender wage gap; 2) There is a crosscountry variation in the relationship between education levels and the gender wage gap; 3) There is also a cross-country variation in the relationship between education levels and the gender employment gap.

In this paper, we study foreign ownership as a vehicle for transferring gender norms across international borders. Specifically, we analyze how the wage differential between men and women in Swedish firms is affected by the degree of gender inequality in the home country of foreign investors. The results suggest that gender norms of the home country matter-the gender wage gap in foreign-owned subsidiaries appears to increase with the degree of gender inequality prevailing in the investors' home market. This finding is identified from within job-spell variation in wages and proves robust across a series of specifications.

In this paper, we study the link between globalization of firms and gender inequality. Specifically, we examine how the need for interpersonal contacts in trade and gender-specific differences in negotiations are related to the gender wage gap. Our key finding is that export of goods that are intensive in interpersonal contacts widens the gender wage gap. The effect is robust across various specifications and is most pronounced for domestic exporting firms, which do not trade within multinational corporations but with external foreign partners, where the contracting problem is most distinct. We ascribe this result to a male comparative advantage in bargaining.

We study how the intersection between skin tone and sex shapes intergenerational mobility of economic resources in Mexico. Using two recent social mobility surveys, we estimate the rank persistence and transition matrices by sex combined with skin tone groups. First, we find no differences in intergenerational mobility patterns between light-skin men and women. Second, the colorist mobility pattern observed in previous literature affects men and women differently. Namely, while women of intermediate and dark-skin tonalities have a lower expected rank than their light-skin peers, only men of the darkest tonalities suffer from the same penalization. Thirdly, women of intermediate and darker skin tones have lower persistence rates at the top of the distribution of economic resources than men of the same skin tonality.

The Coronavirus pandemic has caused major economic restrictions and job losses that have disproportionately affected the most vulnerable in society. Studies report that in South Africa females have suffered greater job losses compared to males during the pandemic and while extensive research has been conducted on the gender-biased impact of national restrictions, little is known about how personal characteristics could have further exacerbated gender inequalities. By using the NIDS-CRAM waves and the NIDS Wave 5 dataset this paper estimated the impact personal characteristics like the level of education, age and number of children have had on dissimilar job losses for males and females in South Africa before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results confirm the importance of personal characteristics reducing job losses for both males and females in the pre-pandemic and pandemic period. However, the results also confirm that these personal characteristics do have gender-biased impact on job losses during the pre-pandemic and pandemic period. For example, tertiary education was a stronger protector against job losses for females before the covid 19 pandemic. However, during the pandemic education reduces significantly as protector against job losses for females and becomes more relevant for males keeping their jobs. Age remained a strong positive protector against job loss for females compared to males in both periods, while the number of children increased the chances of females losing their job more so than males during the pandemic period. These results provide vital insight into the role of personal characteristics in shaping gender-biased job losses during the pre-pandemic and pandemic periods in South Africa.

We examine whether exposure to gender inequality at export destinations a↵ects the gender wage gap in exporting firms. We motivate the analysis through a stylized model where wages depend on worker productivity, and men have a comparative advantage when trading with gender-unequal countries due to customer discrimination. Empirically, we use high-quality matched employer- employee data from Sweden and calculate how exposed firms are to country-level gender inequality through their export destinations. Although increased export intensity on average leads to a wider within-firm gender wage gap, the e↵ect is entirely driven by trade with gender-unequal countries; we find no impact on the gender wage gap when firms increase their exports to countries with gender-equality levels close to that of Sweden. Female managers, who are most likely to interact with foreign customers, experience the most pronounced negative relative wage e↵ects.

We study the role of fertility adjustments for the labor market responsiveness of men and women. First, we use longitudinal Danish register data and tax reforms from 2009 to provide new empirical evidence on asymmetric fertility adjustments to tax changes of men and women. Second, we quantify the importance of these fertility adjustments for understanding the labor supply responsiveness of couples through a life-cycle model of family labor supply and fertility. Allowing fertility adjustments increases the labor supply responsiveness of women by 28%. These adjustments affect human capital accumulation and has permanent implications for the gender wage gap within couples.

Why do women experience a persistent drop in labor earnings upon becoming mothers, i.e. a ``child penalty"? We study a new mechanism: search frictions. We analyze data on job applications sent on a popular online platform linked with administrative data for 350,000 involuntarily unemployed workers in France. First, we highlight differences in job search behavior between mothers and similar women with no children. Mothers send 12.2% fewer job applications and are more selective regarding wage and non-wage amenities. Consistently, they have a lower job finding rate. Second, we analyze the exact time when applications are sent and highlight differences in the timing of job search. We find that mothers' rate of applications decreases by 20.3% in the hours and days when there is no school. We also show that mothers responded to a reform that introduced school on Wednesday by smoothing their search across weekdays and narrowing their search timing gap with other women. In a simple search model, we show that our results imply that mothers both face lower incentives and higher costs to search. We conclude that search frictions disproportionately prevent mothers from improving their labor market situation and contribute to the child penalty.
