    The question of difference - between women and men and among women - is at the heart of feminist theory and the history of feminism. Feminists have long debated the meanings of sexual difference: is it an underlying truth of nature or the result of changing social belief? Are women the same as or different from men? Feminism and History argues that sexual difference, indeed that all forms of social differentiation, cannot be understood apart from history. It brings together the best critical articles available to analyze the ways in which differences among women (along the lines of class, ethnicity, race, and sexuality) and between women and men have been produced. The articles range across many countries and time periods (from the Middle Ages to the present) and they include analyses of western and non-western experiences. There are discussions of race in the United States and in colonial contexts. A variety of theoretical approaches to the question of difference is included; but in all cases, difference is the focus of the historian's analysis

    "A key theme of Gayatri Spivak's work is agency: the ability of the individual to make their own decisions. While Spivak's main aim is to consider ways in which "subalterns"--her term for the indigenous dispossessed in colonial societies--were able to achieve agency, this paper concentrates specifically on describing the ways in which western scholars inadvertently reproduce hegemonic structures in their work. Spivak is herself a scholar, and she remains acutely aware of the difficulty and dangers of presuming to "speak" for the subalterns she writes about. As such, her work can be seen as predominantly a delicate exercise in the critical thinking skill of interpretation; she looks in detail at issues of meaning, specifically at the real meaning of the available evidence, and her paper is an attempt not only to highlight problems of definition, but to clarify them. What makes this one of the key works of interpretation in the Macat library is, of course, the underlying significance of this work. Interpretation, in this case, is a matter of the difference between allowing subalterns to speak for themselves, and of imposing a mode of "speaking" on them that--however well-intentioned--can be as damaging in the postcolonial world as the agency-stifling political structures of the colonial world itself. Women Writing the Neo-Victorian Novel: Erotic “Victorians” focuses on the work of British, Irish, and Commonwealth women writers, such as A.S. Byatt, Emma Donoghue, Sarah Waters, Helen Humphreys, Margaret Atwood, and Ahdaf Soueif, among others, and their attempts to re-envision the erotic. Kathleen Renk’s study analyzes the phenomenon of neo-Victorian fiction and its relationship to contemporary culture, specifically focusing on women writers and the ways in which the erotic is conceived in neo-Victorian fiction, and how this re-conception relates to the interests of contemporary feminism. Renk argues that in their re-envisioning of the Victorian novel, these women writers highlight classical concepts of erôs, and, in addition, they gravitate toward Audre Lorde’s idea that the erotic is not “plasticized sensation” but is “the lifeforce of women, [it is] creative energy empowered.

Barak?t (b. 1952) and argues that their mediations of the Lebanese Civil War of 1975-1990 and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (especially since 1967) led to the development of a feminism specific to the Levant through avant-garde literary aesthetics. Writing in response to war and national crisis, al-Samm?n, Khal?feh, and Barak?t introduce into the Arabic literary canon aesthetic forms capable of carrying Levantine women's experiences. By assessing their feminism in such a way, this book aims to revive a critical emphasis on aesthetics in Arab women's writing. Moreover, by setting literary representations of gender and sexuality in both national and regional contexts, it highlights 'the Levant' as an interstitial space that inspired new forms of Arab feminism

Women Writing the Neo-Victorian Novel: Erotic “Victorians” focuses on the work of British, Irish, and Commonwealth women writers, such as A.S. Byatt, Emma Donoghue, Sarah Waters, Helen Humphreys, Margaret Atwood, and Ahdaf Soueif, among others, and their attempts to re-envision the erotic. Kathleen Renk’s study analyzes the phenomenon of neo-Victorian fiction and its relationship to contemporary culture, specifically focusing on women writers and the ways in which the erotic is conceived in neo-Victorian fiction, and how this re-conception relates to the interests of contemporary feminism. Renk argues that in their re-envisioning of the Victorian novel, these women writers highlight classical concepts of erôs, and, in addition, they gravitate toward Audre Lorde’s idea that the erotic is not “plasticized sensation” but is “the lifeforce of women, [it is] creative energy empowered.
