   Jesus rebukes Peter at Caesarea Philippi by calling him ‘Satan'. The redactor of Matthew adds to this: ‘You are a stumbling block for me!' This article argues that this editorial addition reflects a tendency in Jewish sources (1) to use the image of ‘stumbling' to talk of sin, and (2) to identify the diabolic figure (e.g. Satan, Belial, Evil Inclination) as the cause of ‘stumbling', earning it the title ‘stumbling block'. This tendency has its origins in the Hebrew Bible, is clearly expressed in the literature of the Qumran community, and is further developed in rabbinic sources., French abstract: À Césarée de Philippe Jésus se mit à réprimander Pierre en l'appellent « Satan ». Le rédacteur de l'Évangile selon Matthieu y ajoute « Tu es pour moi occasion de chute! » Cet article soutient que cet ajout rédactionnel reflète une tendance qui se manifeste dans les sources juives à (1) employer l'image de « trébucher » pour parler du péché, et (2) identifier le personnage diabolique (Satan, Bélial, l'Ange des Ténèbres, Penchant mauvais) comme la cause de « trébuchement ». Cela lui vaut le titre de « pierre d'achoppement ». Cette tendance a ses origines dans la Bible hébraïque, elle se manifeste dans la littérature de la communauté de Qumran, et se développe ultérieurement dans la littérature rabbinique.
