    Ce travail est la première édition critique de l’ensemble des écrits principaux qui constituent ce que nous appelons « la querelle de La Pucelle ». La valeur historique de ces textes est incontestable. Le libelle de François Payot de Lignières et celui d’Hyppolite-Jules Pilet de la Mesnardière contre le poème épique - tant attendu - de Chapelain soulignèrent l’écart entre le battage orchestré avant la publication de La Pucelle et la véritable valeur de l’œuvre. Ces écrits n’ont jamais été republiés depuis leur première parution, jusqu’à maintenant. Cela est également vrai pour la réponse de Jean de Montigny au libelle de Lignières. Les seuls exemplaires connus de la réponse de Chapelain au sieur du Rivage (La Mesnardière) et de la Lettre de M Chapelain à M. de La Mesnardière n’existent que sous forme de manuscrits conservés à la Bibliothèque nationale de France. Ces documents n’ont jamais été intégralement publiés jusqu’à présent. Les extraits des Satires de Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux, que nous présentons dans notre volume, sont tirés des éditions originales. La parodie Chapelain décoiffé d’Antoine Furetière est tirée des Œuvres de Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux (1729), éditées par Bernard Picart. Notre livre a pour but de rendre ces écrits plus facilement accessibles afin que tous les lecteurs, qu’ils soient amateurs ou spécialistes de la littérature française, puissent juger de leur valeur historique et littéraire. L’édition comporte une introduction et plus de mille notes.

    The nine essays in this volume focus on performance and audience reception of oral poetry, inviting us to rethink some key concepts for an understanding of traditional epic poetry. Egbert Bakker examines the epic performer's use of time and tense in recounting a past that is alive. Tackling the question of full-length performance of the monumental Iliad, Andrew Ford considers the extent to which the work was perceived as a coherent whole in the archaic age. John Miles Foley addresses questions about spoken signs and the process of reference in epic discourse, and Ahuvia Kahane studies rhythm as a semantic factor in the Homeric performance. Richard Martin suggests a new range of performance functions for the Homeric simile. And Gregory Nagy establishes the importance of one feature of epic language, the ellipsis. These six essays centered on Homer engage with fundamental issues that are addressed by three essays primarily concerned with medieval epic: those by Franz Bäuml on the concept of fact; by Wulf Oesterreicher on types of orality; and by Ursula Schaefer on written and spoken media.     Barbara Pavlock here illuminates the significance of the erotic in the epic tradition from Alexandrian Greece to the late Renaissance by examining the transformations of two Homeric episodes, Odysseus' encounter with Nausikaa and the night-raid of Odysseus and Diomedes. In close readings of epics by Apollonius of Rhodes, Virgil, Ovid, Catullus, Ariosto, and Milton, Pavlock shows how these poets maintain the appearance of thematic continuity as they actually differentiate their own views on heroic values from those of their predecessors. Asserting that the erotic serves in the epic as a locus of criticism of social values, she traces adaptations in rhetorical devices, in larger structural patterns, and in major generic forms, as in the combination of tragic with epic models

It enables students who have been learning Greek for perhaps a year to approach Homer for the first time, and to have the satisfaction of reading two whole books in the original language. Full and detailed help is given with vocabulary, accidence and syntax. Homeric forms are introduced and set alongside Attic ones, enabling students to consolidate their existing knowledge at the same time as extending it. The Introduction and notes enable students to see these two books in the context of the whole epic, and the epic itself in the context of early Greek society.
