This handsome edition makes all Middleton's work accessible in a single volume, for the first time. It will generate excitement and controversy among all readers of Shakespeare and the English classics. - ;Thomas Middleton (1580-1627) - 'our other Shakespeare' - is the only other Renaissance playwright who created lasting masterpieces of both comedy and tragedy; he also wrote the greatest box-office hit of early modern London (the unique history play A Game at Chess). Aphra Behn's novel Oroonoko (1688) is one of the most widely studied works of seventeenth-century literature, because of its powerful representation of slavery and complex portrayal of ways in which differing races and cultures - European, Black African, and Native American - observe and misinterpret each other. This edition presents a new edition of Oroonoko, with unprecedentedly full and informative commentary, along with complete texts of three major British seventeenth-century works concerned with race and colonialism: Henry Neville's The Isle of Pines (1668), Behn's Abdelazer (1676), and Thomas Southerne's tragedy Oroonoko (1696). It combines these with a rich anthology of European discussions of slavery, racial difference, and colonial conquest from the mid-sixteenth century to the time of Behn's death. Many are taken from important works that have not hitherto been easily available, and the collection offers an unrivaled resource for studying the culture that produced Britain's first major fictions of slavery Part one: The major texts. The isle of pines / Henry Neville ; Abdelazer / Aphra Behn ; Oroonoko / Aphra Behn ; Oroonoko / Thomas Southerne -- Part two: Contexts : Europe, America, and Africa. This collection of essays by historians and literary scholars treats English history and culture from the Henrician Reformation to the Glorious Revolution as a single coherent period in which religion is a dominant element in political and cultural life. It seeks to explore the centrality of the religion-politics nexus for this whole period through examining a wide variety of literary and non-literary texts, from plays and poems to devotional treatises, political treatises and histories. It breaks down normal distinctions between Tudor and Stuart, pre- and post-Restoration periods to reveal a coherent (though not all serene and untroubled) post-Reformation culture struggling with major issues of belief, practice and authority Sir John Oldcastle as symbol of Reformation historiography / Annabel Patterson -- The "sacred hunger of ambitious minds" : Spenser's savage religion / Andrew Hadfield -- Subversive fathers and suffering subjects : Shakespeare and Christianity / Debora K. Shuger -- Kneeling and the body politic / Lori Anne Ferrell -- Donne and the politics of devotion / Richard Strier -- Catholic, Anglican or puritan? Edward Sackville, fourth Earl of Dorset, and the ambiguities of religion in early Stuart England / David L. Smith -- Crucifixion or apocalypse? Refiguring the Eikon Basilike / Laura Blair McKnight -- Marvell, sacrilege, and Protestant historigraphy : contextualizing "Upon Appleton House" / Gary D. This book helps the reader make sense of the most commonly studied writer in the world. It starts with a brief explanation of how Shakespeare's writings have come down to us as a series of scripts for actors in the early modern theatre industry of London. The main chapters of the book approach the texts through a series of questions: 'what's changed since Shakespeare's time?', 'to what uses has Shakespeare been put?', and 'what value is there in Shakespeare?' These questions go to the heart of why we study Shakespeare at all, which question the book encourages the readers to answer for themsel

Of all that has been written recently on Shakespearean comedy much is cross-sectional; much has pursued themes, patterns, images and son on, recurring throughout the sequence of plays. Less has been written about he plays themselves. There are of course the introductions to new editions; and there have been articles on this or that play: but any books surveying the whole sequence of the comedies have done so with some one special matter in mind. Thus, there may be room for a book like this; one that deals with the comedies primarily as plays, as separate entities. But such treatments need not
