    Abstract ; In dieser Studie wird umfassend untersucht, wie sich die sympathetic imagination im Werk von J.M. Coetzee entwickelt. Zugrunde liegt die Annahme, dass die Art und Weise wie J.M. Coetzee seine sympathetic imagination zum Einsatz bringt die Empathiefähigkeit des Lesers zu steigern vermag. Ausgangspunkt für die Untersuchung und deren zentrale Analysekategorien für die Besprechung der Romane Coetzees ist ein Blick auf Spiegelneuronen als neuronale Grundlage für Empathie, ein relative neues und stetig sich erweiterndes Feld. Geteilte Aufmerksamkeit (shared attention) und Perspektivübernahme (perspective-taking) bilden den Mittelpunkt bei neurowissenschaftlichen Diskussionen über den Zusammenhang zwischen Spiegelneuronen und Empathie. Eine Analyse von Coetzees Romanen zeigt, dass in seiner Literatur vergleichbare Mechanismen zur Wirkung kommen. ; Abstract ; The following study attempts a comprehensive evaluation of how the sympathetic imagination evolves in the works of J.M. Coetzee. The underlying assumption is that the way Coetzee employs his sympathetic imagination in his fiction enhances the reader’s empathetic capabilities. A starting point for the central categories of analysis and the close readings of his novels will be a brief exploration of the neuronal basis of empathy as discussed in the context of the discovery of and continuously extending research on mirror neurons as the neurological basis for empathy. Shared attention and perspective-taking constitute the focus of neuroscientific discussions of the connection between empathy and mirror neurons. A close look at Coetzee’s fiction will reveal comparable mechanisms in literary representation.

Sieht man aber genauer hin, erweist sich die Fähigkeit, »sich in andere Menschen hineinzuversetzen«, auch als Voraussetzung für gezielte Erniedrigungen und Grausamkeiten. Zudem hat selbst das wohlmeinende Mitgefühl zahlreiche unbeabsichtigte Konsequenzen. Aus diesen Gründen sind es gerade die dunklen, bisher verdrängten Aspekte der Empathie, die auf dem Weg zu einer besseren Gesellschaft in den Blick genommen werden müssen. Fritz Breithaupt lädt seine Leser dazu ein, diese Seiten zu bedenken oder gar an sich selbst zu entdecken, und führt uns dabei von Narzissmus und Nietzsche bis zu den Helikopter-Eltern und Angela Merkels Flüchtlingspolitik. „Wozu sind Menschen fähig, weil sie über Mitgefühl verfügen? In "Die dunklen Seiten der Empathie" konzentriert sich der Kognitionswissenschaftler Fritz Breithaupt auf schlechte Taten in Verbindung mit dieser positiv besetzten Empfindung... Fritz Breithaupt ist Literatur-, Kultur- und Kognitionswissenschaftler und unterrichtet seit vielen Jahren in den USA. Als er dort dieses Buch schrieb, verfolgte er den amerikanischen Präsidentschaftswahlkampf. Donald Trump lieferte ihm Anschauungsmaterial für die These, dass Empathie das Freund-Feind-Denken fördert, da Empathie immer eine von zwei Seiten bevorzugt. Mit anderen Worten: Wir handeln vielleicht nicht moralisch, weil wir Empathie empfinden. Sondern wir moralisieren, weil wir vorschnell Partei ergriffen haben und voreingenommen sind.     Main description: In Thinking of Others, Ted Cohen argues that the ability to imagine oneself as another person is an indispensable human capacity--as essential to moral awareness as it is to literary appreciation--and that this talent for identification is the same as the talent for metaphor. To be able to see oneself as someone else, whether the someone else is a real person or a fictional character, is to exercise the ability to deal with metaphor and other figurative language. The underlying faculty, Cohen argues, is the same--simply the ability to think of one thing as another when it plainly is not. In an engaging style, Cohen explores this idea by examining various occasions for identifying with others, including reading fiction, enjoying sports, making moral arguments, estimating one's future self, and imagining how one appears to others. Using many literary examples, Cohen argues that we can engage with fictional characters just as intensely as we do with real people, and he looks at some of the ways literature itself takes up the question of interpersonal identification and understanding. An original meditation on the necessity of imagination to moral and aesthetic life, Thinking of Others is an important contribution to philosophy and literary theory.

Auch wenn der Begriff Empathie in den letzten Jahren eine wachsende Rolle in den Diskussionen zur Natur emotionaler Involvierung des Zuschauers vor einem Bild – gleichviel ob bewegt oder unbewegt – gespielt hat, wird doch in der heutigen Forschung selten der ausgreifenden Debatte zur Intersubjektivität gedacht, die sich vor und nach 1900 an den Begriff der Einfühlung knüpfte und sich dabei von der Psychologie über die Kunstgeschichte bis hin zur philosophischen Ästhetik spannte. Die Arbeit des Psychologen und Ästhetikers Theodor Lipps kann dabei als repräsentativ gelten, lässt sich die Besonderheit seines Ansatzes doch darin erkennen, dass Lipps Einfühlung als eine unwillkürliche, instinkthafte und kinästhetische Form der Anverwandlung betrachtet, die sich – und das ist bedeutsam – auch auf unbelebte Objekte erstrecken kann, etwa auf Räume, Farben oder Geräusche, sich aber naturgemäß eher auf belebte Objekte wie Tiere oder andere Menschen erstreckt. Diese Vorstellung einer gleichsam allumfassenden empathischen Nahbeziehung zur Welt bildet den Ausgangspunkt, um von dort aus zeitgenössischen Diskussionen und Konzepte des ästhetischen Erlebens nachzugehen.     The mobile telecommunication (telecom) sector has become the basic source of information now-a-days especially in Cameroon. It is used to transfer and deliver information through voice, video, data, graphics, and more at perpetually increasing speeds. The quality of mobile services does not only impact the attraction of new customers but also to maintain the existing ones. The study uses relationship marketing theory and a quantitative and cross-sectional method with 200 respondents. Information was obtained from users of MTN and Orange mobile telecommunication networks. The analyses were done using SPSS version 20. Tangibility, reliability, and assurance dimensions of staff service quality showed a positive relationship with customer loyalty in mobile telecom companies in Cameroon. The findings also highlight the influence of service quality dimensions on customer loyalty in the mobile telecom companies of the country. This study complements to extant literature by examining the influence of the five service quality dimensions; tangibility, reliability, assurance, responsiveness, and empathy on consumer loyalty or retention in the mobile telecommunication companies in Cameroon.

    Artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled voice assistants (VAs) such as Amazon Alexa increasingly assist shopping decisions and exhibit empathic behavior. The advancement of empathic AI raises concerns about machines nudging consumers into purchasing undesired or unnecessary products. Yet, it is unclear how the machine’s empathic behavior affects consumer responses and decision-making outcomes during voice-enabled shopping. This article draws from the service robot acceptance model (sRAM) and social response theory (SRT) and presents an individual-session experiment where families (vs. individuals) complete actual shopping tasks using an ad-hoc Alexa app featuring high (vs. standard) empathic capabilities. We apply the experimental conditions as moderators to the structural model, bridging selected functional, social-emotional, and relational variables. Our framework collocates affective empathy, explicates the bases of consumers’ beliefs, and predicts behavioral outcomes. Findings demonstrate (i) an increase in consumers’ perceptions, beliefs, and adoption intentions with empathic Alexa, (ii) a positive response to empathic Alexa holding constant in family settings, and (iii) an interaction effect only on the functional model dimensions whereby families show greater responses to empathic Alexa while individuals to standard Alexa

    "Affective Relations: The Transnational Politics of Empathy explores the power dynamics underlying the contemporary affective injunction to 'be empathetic', and their complex social and geopolitical implications. Through analysis of a range of popular and scholarly sites and texts - including Obama's speeches and memoirs, best-selling business books, international development literatures, popular science tracts, postcolonial literature and feminist, anti-racist and queer theory - this book investigates the possibilities, risks and contradictions of figuring empathy as an affective tool for engendering transnational social justice. Opening up new ways of thinking and feeling empathetic politics beyond universalist calls to 'put oneself in the others' shoes', it examines empathy's dynamic links to processes of location, translation, imagination and attunement. Affective Relations is interested in how empathy might be translated differently - how dominant liberal, neoliberal and neocolonial visions and practices of empathy can be reinterpreted in the context of transnationality to activate alternative affective connections, solidarities and potentialities"--
