An affair of places -- Reading Stevens, once more. Poems (and critics) of our climate ; "Like Seeing Fallen Brightly Away": a new theory for the Emerson/Stevens genealogy -- From epistemological to ecological poetics. "There Is No World": deconstruction, theoretical biology, and the creative universe ; "Never Again Would Birds' Song Be the Same" -- "Farewell to an Idea": some later long poems. Scapes and spheres ; "Premetaphysical Pluralism": dwelling in the ordinary -- Coda: indirections, on the way . "The poems of Wallace Stevens teem with birds: grackles, warblers, doves, swans, robins, nightingales, jays, owls, peacocks, the "bird with the coppery, keen claws," a "parakeet of parakeets," a "widow's bird," and one famous blackbird who summons thirteen ways of looking. What do Stevens's evocations of birds, and his poems more generally, tell us about the distance between human and non-human? In what ways can we read him as an ecological poet, and how would reading him this way change our idea of ecopoetics? In this book, the noted theorist of posthumanism Cary Wolfe reconceptualizes ecopoetics through a poet not often associated with the terms "ecology" and "environment." Stevens, Wolfe argues, is an ecological poet in a sense that reaches well beyond his poems' imagery. Stevens's poetry is well known for embodying the tension between a desire for "things as they are," without human mediation, and the supreme value of the imagination. Noting Stevens's refusal to resolve this tension, Wolfe shows how the poems reward study alongside theories of system and observation derived from a multitude of sources, from Ralph Waldo Emerson to Niklas Luhmann. Stevens is ecopoetic in the sense that his places, worlds, and environments are generated by the life forms that inhabit them"--

"Earth Matters tells the story of how American theatre has shaped popular understandings of the environment throughout the 20th century as it argues for theatre's potential power in the age of climate change. Using cultural and environmental history, seven chapters illuminate key moments in American theatre and American environmentalism over the course of the 20th century in the US. Earth Matters focuses in particular on how drama has represented environmental injustice, and how inequality has become part of the American environmental landscape. As the first book-length ecocritical study of American theatre, Earth Matters examines both familiar dramas, but also lesser-known grassroots plays, in an effort to show that theatre can be a powerful force for social change From frontier drama of the late nineteenth century to the eco-theatre movement, Earth Matters argues that theatre has been part of the history of environmental ideas and action in the U.S. Earth Matters also maps the rise of an ecocritical thought and ecotheatre practice-what the author calls ecodramaturgy -showing how theatre has informed environmental perceptions and policies. Through key plays and productions, it identifies strategies for artists who want their work to contribute to cultural transformation in the face of climate change"--

"The Anthropocene has fundamentally changed the way we think about our relation to nonhuman life and to the planet. This book is the first to critically survey how the Anthropocene is enriching the study of literature and inspiring contemporary poetry and fiction. Engaging with topics such as genre, life, extinction, memory, infrastructure, energy, and the future, the book makes a compelling case for literature's unique contribution to contemporary environmental thought. It pays attention to literature's imaginative and narrative resources, and also to its appeal to the emotions and its relation to the material world. As the Anthropocene enjoins us to read the signals the planet is sending and to ponder the traces we leave on the Earth, it is also, this book argues, a literary problem. Literature and the Anthropocene maps key debates and introduces the often difficult vocabulary for capturing the entanglement of human and nonhuman lives in an insightful way. Alternating between accessible discussions of prominent theories and concise readings of major works of Anthropocene literature, the book serves as an indispensable guide to this exciting new subfield for academics and students of literature and the environmental humanities"--

This title brings ecocritical studies into a dialogue with postcolonial studies. By examining African, Caribbean, Pacific Island, and South Asian literatures and how they depict the relationship between humans and nature, this book makes a compelling argument for a more global approach to thinking through our current environmental crisis. Turning to the contemporary production of postcolonial novelists and poets, this book poses the literary imagination as a crucial to imagining what Eduoard Glissant calls the 'aesthetics of the earth'

The Oxford Handbook of Ecocriticism explores a range of critical perspectives used to analyze literature, film, and the visual arts in relation to the natural environment. Since the publication of field-defining works by Lawrence Buell, Jonathan Bate, and Cheryll Glotfelty and Harold Fromm in the 1990s, ecocriticism has become a conventional paradigm for critical analysis alongside queer theory, deconstruction, and postcolonial studies. The field includes numerous approaches, genres, movements, and media, as the essays collected here demonstrate. The contributors come from around the globe and, similarly, the literature and media covered originate from several countries and continents. Taken together, the essays consider how literary and other cultural productions have engaged with the natural environment to investigate climate change, environmental justice, sustainability, the nature of "humanity," and more.

Annihilationand Cinematic Adaptation / Cameron Kunzelman -- Love in the Time of the Anthropocene: A Conversation Between Alison Sperling and Jeff VanderMeer / Alison Sperling. "This edited collection approaches the most pressing discourses of the Anthropocene and posthumanist culture through the surreal, yet instructive lens of Jeff VanderMeer's fiction. In contrast to universalist and essentializing ways of responding to new material realities, VanderMeer's work invites us to re-imagine human subjectivity and other collectivities in the light of historically unique entanglements we face today: the ecological, technological, aesthetic, epistemological and political challenges of life in the Anthropocene era. Situating these messy, multi-scalar, material complexities of life in close relation to their ecological, material, and colonialist histories, his fiction renders them at once troublingly familiar and strangely generative of other potentialities and insight. The collection measures VanderMeer's work as a new kind of speculative surrealism, his texts capturing the strangeness of navigating a world in which "nature" has become radically uncanny due to global climate change and powerful bio-technologies. The first collection to survey academic engagements with VanderMeer, this book brings together scholars in the fields of environmental literature, science fiction, genre studies, American literary history, anthropology, philosophy of technology, and digital cultures to reflect on the environmentally, culturally, aesthetically, and politically central questions his fiction poses to predominant understandings of the Anthropocene"--

Introduction : stratigraphic criticism -- "Earth trembled" : Paradise lost, the little Ice Age, and the climate of allegory -- "The works of nature" : descriptive poetry and the history of the earth in Thomson's The seasons -- Mine, factory, and plantation : the industrial georgic and the crisis of description -- Uncertain atmospheres : romantic lyricism in the time of the Anthropocene. "For the humanities, climate change is a problem of historical understanding that requires new scales of context, including that of planetary processes. In this book, Tobias Menely shows that poetry is a rich and revealing archive of geohistorical change. Poetry and the kind of human world-making that it exemplifies can best be understood, Menely argues, through their interconnections with a dynamic Earth System. Menely focuses on English poetry of the momentous century and a half, during which Britain, emerging from a crisis intensified by the Little Ice Age, established the largest empire in world history and instigated the Industrial Revolution. These poems depict seasonal and climatic extremes, unpredictable weather, and the cycles of wind and water as inescapable conditions of production and limits to growth. Menely shows that geohistorical transition is expressed not only topically but also in changing literary modes, and that the poetry of this period--from Milton's "Paradise Lost" forward--reflects a recognition of planetary crisis. The result is a bracing and sophisticated contribution to ecological poetics and to the cultural history of the Anthropocene"--

Carl August Thielo as experimental eighteenth-century novelist / Simona Zetterberg Gjerlevsen -- Passionately cool : concrete poetry in Denmark / Tania Ørum -- Digital astro-evolution and ecological thinking in Johannes Heldén's Astroecology / Hans Kristian S. Rustad. "How did Nordic culture become associated with the fuzzy brand "cool", as by default? In Exploring NORDIC COOL in Literary History twenty-one scholars in collaboration question the seemingly natural fit between "Nordic" and "Cool" by investigating its variegated trajectories through literary history, from medieval legends to digital poetry. At the same time, the elasticity and polysemy of the word "cool" become a means to explore Nordic literary history afresh. It opens up a rich diversity of theoretical and methodological approaches within a regional framework and reveals hitherto unseen links between familiar and less familiar tracks and sites. Following diverse paths of "Nordic cool" in respect to - among other things - nature, survival, love, whiteness, style, economics, heroism and colonialism, this book aims at challenging all-too-recognisable narratives and to bring the important knowledge potential of literary historical research to the fore"--
