    In Brian Friel's writing, the distinction between public and private is closely linked to the concepts of home, family, identity and truth. This study examines the characters' excessive introspection and their deep-seated need to disclose their most intimate knowledge and private truths to define who they are and, thus, to oppose dominant discourse or avoid heteronomy. This study begins by investigating how a number of Anglo-Irish writers publicised their characters' private versions of truth thereby illustrating what they perceived to be the space of 'Irishness'. The book then focuses on Friel's techniques of sharing his character's private views to demonstrate how he adopted and adapted these practices in his own oeuvre. As the characters' superficial inarticulateness and their vivid inner selves are repeatedly juxtaposed in Friel's texts, his oeuvre, quintessentially, displays a great unease with the concepts of communication and absolute truth. This new edition gives a brief overview of further developments in relevant fields and discusses the importance of the concept of teaching as an art in light of the increasing standardization and digitalization of education.     I personaggi di molte tragedie e commedie antiche, greche e latine (Eschilo, Sofocle, Euripide, Seneca, Menandro, Plauto), ma anche di drammi moderni ispirati al mondo classico (Lorenzo il Magnifico, Antonio Somma) agiscono in preda alla gelosia. Spesso nell'antichità questa emozione non è stata identificata da una parola specifica, ma la situazione permette comunque di riconoscerla. Dee e dei, donne e uomini ne possono essere affetti e agiscono di conseguenza: l'esito delle loro azioni è spesso catastrofico per sé e per gli altri e non sempre è possibile simpatizzare con le persone gelose. Dodici studi, organizzati in ordine cronologico all'interno di tre sezioni tematiche ("Il lessico della gelosia", "La divina gelosia", "Donne vs. uomini: sesso, sangue e gelosia"), indagano questa comune emozione umana attraverso l'opera teatrale.

    Seit dem Prix Goncourt im Jahre 2004 ist Laurent Gaudé ein Autor mit steigendem Bekanntheitsgrad. Durch den großen Erfolg seiner Romane, die bereits in über 35 Sprachen übersetzt sind, werden auch seine Dramen nicht nur in Frankreich regelmäßig gespielt überraschenderweise sind sie von der Literaturwissenschaft im deutschsprachigen Raum noch kaum beachtet worden. In seinem Werk hinterfragt Gaudé die Legitimation von Macht und Unterdrückung durch religiösen Fanatismus, geht den Motoren für körperliche und psychische Gewalt auf den Grund und kontrastiert die Auflehnung der Ausgegrenzten mit den Zwängen und Hierarchien der modernen Gesellschaft. Die Schlagkraft von Gaudés subtilen Beobachtungen wird durch die dionysischen Aspekte des Rauschhaften, Zerstörerischen und Grenzüberschreitenden in seinen Figuren erhöht. Verdichtet konstituieren diese Wesenszüge des antiken Dionysos eine Philosophie der Entgrenzung, die sich durch zahlreiche intertextuelle Bezüge auch auf der poetologischen Ebene niederschlägt und Lösungsansätze für die vielen zivilisatorischen Krisen der Gegenwart anbietet.

    In Brian Friel's writing, the distinction between public and private is closely linked to the concepts of home, family, identity and truth. This study examines the characters' excessive introspection and their deep-seated need to disclose their most intimate knowledge and private truths to define who they are and, thus, to oppose dominant discourse or avoid heteronomy. This study begins by investigating how a number of Anglo-Irish writers publicised their characters' private versions of truth thereby illustrating what they perceived to be the space of 'Irishness'. The book then focuses on Friel's techniques of sharing his character's private views to demonstrate how he adopted and adapted these practices in his own oeuvre. As the characters' superficial inarticulateness and their vivid inner selves are repeatedly juxtaposed in Friel's texts, his oeuvre, quintessentially, displays a great unease with the concepts of communication and absolute truth
