    Abstract ; Anknüpfend an linguistische Untersuchungen zur Mehrsprachigkeit wird in diesem Beitrag herausgearbeitet, wie die sogenannte Südschleswiger Literatur als ein Spannungsfeld sprachlicher Varietäten begreifbar ist. Mit einer Analyse der sprachideologischen Entfaltung eines Revuetextes (2016) und eines Gedichts (1977/2011) wird gezeigt, dass territoriale oder identitätspolitische Aspekte die komplexen Konstellationen der Varietäten häufig zu Unrecht dominieren. In diesem Beitrag wird dafür plädiert, stattdessen den Adressatenbezug mehrsprachiger Literatur und die Prozesse der sozialen Positionierung zu untersuchen. Damit einhergehend wird eine neuartige Funktion dieser Minderheitenliteratur festgestellt: die gedächtnispolitische Symbolik einer generationsspezifischen Erinnerungsliteratur. ; Abstract ; Building on linguistic studies on multilingualism, this contribution elaborates the so-called Southern Schleswig literature as an area of tension of language varieties. An analysis of the manifestation of language ideology in a revue text (2016) and a poem (1977/2011) demonstrates that complex variety constellations are often wrongly dominated by aspects of territorial and identity politics. This article is pleading for the analysis of the reference to the addressees within multilingual literature and the social relations in which the communicating parties take their stand. The minority literature in Southern Schleswig has, as this paper shows, obviously taken over a new function, as the symbolism of a politics of memory in generation-specific remembrance literature is strongly apparent.

    Liest man Søren Kierkegaards Schriften textanalytisch, lässt sich das Verhältnis des Ästhetischen und des Religiösen in seinem Werk ganz neu bestimmen. Statt dass beide einander ausschließen, wie oftmals im Anschluss an Kierkegaards eigenes Diktum angenommen, lässt sich durch eingehende Detailstudien eine reziproke Bedingtheit offenbaren, die auf anthropologische, theologische und kunsttheoretische Prämissen zurückverweist. So belegt die Arbeit bereits in Texten aus Entweder – Oder oder der Wiederholung religiöse Kernthesen (z.B. zum christlichen Paradox, zu Unmittelbarkeit und rezeptiver Selbstaufgabe) anhand der narratologischen Komposition, Semantik, Wiederholungs- und Gegensatzfiguren u.a. Anhand der bisher kaum beachteten, hochkomplexen stilistischen Struktur verschiedener religiöser Reden und der Einübung im Christentum wird gezeigt, dass deren theologischer Gehalt umgekehrt erst durch die Indienstnahme ästhetischer Verfahrensweisen, Motive und Denkweisen zu Stande kommt. Der Band vereint eine literaturwissenschaftliche mit einer theologischen und philosophischen Perspektive in faszinierenden Analysen und weist so den Weg in ein neues Verständnis von Kierkegaards Schaffen

    Benny Andersen, currently Denmark's most popular poet, is virtually unknown in the United States. He is a poet of remarkable versatility, whose voices range from reflective to whimsical.     Many European high-income countries face a rapid increase in the number of immigrants from low- and middle-income countries reaching the normal pension age. Thus, it is increasingly relevant to ask: how are older migrants from such countries faring? Here we study poverty rates and determinants of poverty among natives and persons born in Bosnia, Iran, Iraq, Yugoslavia and Turkey living in Denmark or Sweden in 2010. Income data on all such persons aged 65 to 82 living in the two destination countries are analysed. In both Denmark and Sweden, we report much higher poverty rates among the immigrants studied than among natives. Estimated probability models show that being poor is related to a person's education, family status and age, as well as year of arrival in the destination country and the labour market and his or her residential status at the age of 55. However, the labour market in the destination country at the time of arrival also matter. Persons born in Yugoslavia or Turkey who had immigrated to Denmark during the '70s and '80s were more likely to be in poverty in 2010 that their counterparts with the same characteristics who had immigrated to Sweden.

    The work of teachers matters in many different ways. Not only do they provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the labour market, but they also help develop the social-emotional skills that are vital for students’ personal development and for their active citizenship. But how do teachers best achieve this? By linking 2018 data from the Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) with evidence from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) – known as the TALIS-PISA link – this report aims to identify the teacher and school factors that matter most for student achievement and social-emotional development. The report uses a data-driven approach – based on machine learning and standard regression analyses – to identify the dimensions that are most strongly linked with student outcomes, and then combines this with a careful review of theory and previous research to analyse and interpret the findings. These findings provide a rich illustration of the many ways in which teachers and school leaders might influence the success of their students, acting as a tool for educators to reflect upon their own practice. Finally, the report offers several directions for education policy.

    What determines emigration, and what impact does it have on the sending country? We consider the case of Denmark between 1868 and 1908, when a large number of people left for America. A significant fraction of these were tyender, a servant-like occupational group that was heavily discriminated against at the time, and who saw little opportunities for advancement at home. We exploit the fact that the Danish agrarian reforms between 1784 and 1807 had differential impacts on this class of landless laborers around the country, and use detailed parish-level data – police protocols of emigrants; population censuses and land registers – to show that areas with a more unequal distribution of land witnessed larger emigration. We then use income tax data, finding evidence of a positive income effect on the areas which saw most emigration.

    The relative success of the Danish and failure of the Irish dairy industries before the First World War is often contrasted given their competition for the lucrative British butter market. The traditional narrative implicitly assumes that Ireland failed because it was unsuccessful at adopting the cooperative institution, and that Irish cooperatives were not as efficient as their Danish counterparts, despite having been explicitly modelled on them. This assumption is, however, untested at the ‘firm’ level. We seek to rectify this through the analysis of a large microlevel database of creameries in both countries over the period 1898-1903. Using Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA), a standard methodology in modern productivity studies, we find no evidence for significant productivity differences on average, although there was a much larger variance in Ireland. This nuances the idea that the Irish were unable to cooperate successfully, although some creameries were certainly productivity laggards.

    Economic historians have debated the importance of energy for economic development. Energy economists would argue that energy systems need to be adaptable in the face of shocks. In this light, we consider the case of Denmark, a country which was almost entirely dependent on imports of coal, and where a long coastline made imports, largely from the UK, cheap and available. Towards the end of the First World War, however, and well into the 1920s, coal imports were cut off or difficult to obtain. We exploit detailed microlevel data from butter factories, covering the period 1900-28. We find that firms were able to adapt and make use of alternative fuels, notably peat, although its availability varied across the country. Employing a difference-in-differences approach, we find significant productivity advantages for creameries closer to available peat fields in the wake of the coal shortage.

    This report explores the interconnections between trafficking, sex work and reproductive health along the West African-European corridor. Fifty-one women were interviewed at different points of their journeys from Nigeria and Ivory Coast through Niger, Tunisia, Libya, across the Mediterranean to Italy and onwards to Northern Europe. Moving away from the do not migrate message, this project draws on migrant women's experiences to develop better harm reduction measures, with a special focus on reproductive health along the route. The argument that women are using 'anchor babies' to exploit humanitarian systems ignores how difficult it can be to reach Europe without getting pregnant, given the high level of sexual violence en route. Irregular migrant women face exclusion from reproductive healthcare and stress their need for assistance and information services. The report applies a trafficking-migration continuum to understand how categories of forced, voluntary or irregular migration will vary according to political and moral values. While often overlooked, debt plays a central role in the migratory experience. With the term indentured sex work migration, we switch the focus from human trafficking to a labour migration actively organised by women.

    We evaluate the impact of a nationwide public health intervention on deaths from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), using population data from Denmark in a regression discontinuity research design. The information campaign - implemented primarily through a universal nurse home visiting program - reduced infant mortality by 17.2 percent and saved between 11.6-13.5 lives over 10,000 births. The estimated effect sizes are 11-14 times larger among low birthweight and preterm infants relative to the overall population. Improvement in infant mortality is concentrated among those with low socio-economic status and with limited access to health information, thereby reducing health inequities at birth.

    The Russian attack on Ukraine in February 2022 shook continental geopolitics and led to a major shift in EU energy policy. The necessary speed of the combined diversification away from the Russian energy sources, fossil fuel phase-out and mass scale-up of low-carbon energy and technologies are having a tremendous impact on European national economies and societies. The Baltic Sea Region is no exception. Baltic Sea energy politics currently paints a complicated picture of competing pipeline projects, sprouting new LNG terminals, plans to build nuclear power infrastructure, a race to develop new energy technologies and to increase the interconnectedness, and digitalisation of the electricity grids. These developments will transform the regional energy landscape for decades to come and have important security implications. This DIIS Report provides a comprehensive overview of the energy security situation in the Baltic Sea Region, zooming in on eight country cases (Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Germany). By locating the national energy policies in a historical context that shaped choices of energy infrastructure and technology, the analysis investigates how the energy policy and energy mix of each country was affected by cutting the energy ties with the Kremlin following the outbreak of war in 2022.

    In this paper, we present a quarterly model for the Danish economy while focusing on the main assumptions behind the model and the construction of the databank behind the model. The purpose of the model is to build a platform for analysing the interdependencies between the real and financial sides of the economy, which is an important feature of the stock-flow consistent approach. The model parameters are estimated using quarterly Danish data over the period 2005-2020. We validate the model from both an empirical and theoretical perspective. From an empirical point of view, we numerically solve the model and compare the model results with the original data to ensure that the model is able to capture the dynamics of the economy. From a theoretical point of view, we introduce a standard shock to public spending and explore whether the response of the economy is in line with what is predicted by the theory. In both cases, we find that the model fulfils the intended objective.

    In 2014, a DIIS policy study explored the past and future challenges of local interpreters working alongside Danish troops in military operations (Plambech and Danstrøm, 2014). The study focused on risks faced by local interpreters in different contexts; the human, economic and reputational costs involved; the outsourcing of recruitment to private contractors; and questions of accountability. The study provided both operational and policy recommendations. The aftermath of the evacuations that followed the withdrawal of US and NATO troops in August 2021, coupled with the expiration of the 'Danish agreement on the management of the situation for interpreters and other locally employed in Afghanistan' (Tolkeaftalen) by the end of 2022, provides an opportunity to access the role of local interpreters in military operations as well as the ethical and political dilemmas involved. The present working paper attempts to do so. It builds on a literature review of academic analyses, policy reports, a recent joint Danish government evaluation of the evacuation from Afghanistan, and interviews with representatives from Danish ministries and NGOs, the Danish Defence Command, relevant allies and other stakeholders. A shorter Danish language policy brief presents the main findings.

    Im Rahmen der Studie werden wirtschaftliche Stärken und Schwächen beidseits der deutsch-dänischen Grenze sowie Handlungsfelder für eine vertiefte Kooperation in der Grenzregion identifiziert. Es wird analysiert, welche "kritischen Massen" in der Grenzregion mobilisiert werden könnten, um auf beiden Seiten der Grenze Schwächen zu überwinden und die Gesamtregion im Wettbewerb um Investoren und knappe Arbeitskräfte zu stärken. Auf Grundlage einer Expertenbefragung werden Schlüsselfaktoren für die Entwicklung der Grenzregion abgeleitet und mögliche Entwicklungsszenarien für die deutsch-dänische Grenzregion modelliert. Das Autorenteam zeigt darüber hinaus, dass die Erfahrungen und Kooperationsmodelle bereits stärker integrierten Grenzregionen Lerneffekte für die Institutionalisierung der Zusammenarbeit und insbesondere für die Ausgestaltung von Arbeitsmarktkooperationen bieten. The study identifies economic strengths and weaknesses on both sides of the German-Danish border as well as fields of action for deeper cooperation in the border region. It analyzes which "critical masses" could be mobilized in the border region to overcome weaknesses on both sides of the border and to strengthen the overall region in the competition for investors and scarce labor. Based on an expert survey, key factors for the development of the border region are derived and possible development scenarios for the German-Danish border region are modeled. The team of authors also shows that the experiences and cooperation models of already more integrated border regions offer learning effects for the institutionalization of cooperation and especially for the design of labor market cooperation.
