    Josephus’ Temple ekphrasis in his Jewish War (5.136–247) is a significant literary monument. The description of this quintessential Jewish holy place has a great deal to do with Jewish identity. In the late fourth century, the Latin Christian author Pseudo-Hegesippus, in his work On the Destruction of Jerusalem, rewrote the Temple description to emphasize Christian identity as central to the Temple’s construction, not Jewish identity. In the tenth century, the Jewish author of the Hebrew Sefer Yosippon rewrote the Temple description again to emphasize Jewish identity. By reading these Greek, Latin, and Hebrew Temple descriptions comparatively, one may identify an ongoing identity discourse about Jewish and/or Christian identity vis-à-vis the Jerusalem Temple. These three accounts, with each subsequent account based on the one that came before, illustrate a back-and-forth discussion between Jewish and Christian authors across a millennium about what the Temple means and is/was for Jews and Christians.

    Il volume ha per oggetto la traduzione latina del "De bello Iudaico" di Giuseppe Flavio, nota come "Pseudo Egesippo" e intende offrire un quadro della formazione culturale del suo autore, la cui identità è da lungo tempo oggetto di dibattito. La solida preparazione attinta alla scuola classica e fondata su scrittori pagani di cui questo autore cristiano dà prova, unita all'interesse per la storia ebraica, orienta verso l'ambiente romano della metà del IV secolo. Lo studio pone una nuova tessera per comporre il mosaico del clima culturale dell'epoca. Quanto all'identità dell'autore, l'ipotesi è che si tratti del giovane Ambrogio, che prima di diventare vescovo di Milano (374-397) visse proprio a Roma: la tesi getterebbe nuova luce sulla sua formazione romana, classica ma anche già pienamente cristiana e attenta al confronto con il mondo giudaico, termine privilegiato con cui misurarsi. Un confronto che ha indirizzato la sua formazione e ha suscitato in lui la ricerca di risposte alle obiezioni che quel mondo poneva.
