ger: Beide Romane, River Thieves (2002) und The Wreckage (2005) geschrieben von Michael Crummey, sowie seine Kurzgeschichtensammlung Flesh and Blood (1998) und seine zweite Gedichtesammlung Hard Light (1998), sind außergewöhnliche Werke postmoderner, regionaler und historischer Literatur, die sich mit Neufundland`s Erbe sowie der Beziehung der Charaktere zu regionalen Begebenheiten wie Landschaft und Arbeit auseinandersetzen.Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die theoretischen Definitionen und Erklärungen sowie die Entwicklung des Begriffes ?The New Regionalism? vorzustellen und zu vergleichen. Zudem soll durch eine literarische Analyse von vier Werken aufgezeigt werden, wie und in welchem Maße diese Strömung in Michael Crummeys Literatur implementiert worden ist.Crummeys Bücher sind gezeichnet von regionalistischen und postmodernen Einflüssen und können somit dem Genre des ?postmodern regionalism? oder auch ?The New Regionalism? zugeordnet werden. Der kanadische Autor schreibt nicht nur über sein Heimatland, dessen wilde Landschaft, dessen Geschichte und dessen Einwohner/innen, sondern verdeutlicht vor allem den Einfluss einer bestimmten Region auf das tiefe Bewusstsein eines Menschen für seine Herkunft sowie seine regionale Identität.Michael Crummeys Literatur erfüllt alle klassischen Merkmale der literarischen Strömung ?New Regionalism? (z.B. Beschreibung einer bestimmten Region und dessen Landschaft) und reflektiert darüber hinaus grundlegende Konflikte entlang von Grenzen, die eine regionale, persönliche und soziale Identität definieren. Der Autor erzählt die Geschichten seiner Vorfahren, welche in Zeiten der Entbehrung um ihr Überleben kämpften, anschaulich und lebensnah, und versucht zudem, seinen Leser/innen zu vermitteln, wie es war, zu einer bestimmten Zeit, an einem bestimmten Ort, zu leben. eng: Both novels, River Thieves (2002) and The Wreckage (2005), written by Michael Crummey, as well as his short story collection Flesh and Blood (1998) and his second collection of poetry Hard Light (1998) are extraordinary works of postmodern, regionalist and historical fiction dealing with Newfoundland?s heritage as well as the characters? relation with nature and work, which also tells its readers something about their relation with the world at large, with their culture, and the people they share it with, in other words: their regional identity.The aim of this paper is to present and to compare the theoretical concepts and the development of the term ?new regionalism? and to demonstrate how and to what exent it is implemented in Michael Crummey?s fiction by analysing four of his works.Crummey?s writing bears the stamp of regionalism and postmodernism, a literary genre called postmodernist regionalism or new regionalism. His work is consistently informed by a regional determinism. He does not only write about his home place Newfoundland, its harsh, wild landscape, its history and its people, but primarily highlights how a distinct regional community defines a particular sense of place. Michael Crummey?s fiction fulfills all classic functions of the literary genre of new regionalism (i.e. writing about a certain region and describing its landscape), and furthermore reflects vital conflicts along borders that define regional, personal and social identity. The regionalist author vividly depicts his predecessors, who struggle to survive during times of extreme privation. Placing all his stories in the past, Crummey conveys a sense of what it was like to live and work in a certain time and place.Crummey?s works hold up a mirror to its readers, making them aware of the effect that region, landscape and their history have on the personalities and perspectives of its inhabitants and thus highlights the importance to concern oneself with one?s own heritage.
