ger: In meiner Masterarbeit beschäftige ich mich mit der Transformation von Nebencharakteren aus der klassischen Englischen Literatur zu Hauptcharakteren in postkolonialen Adaptionen dieser kanonischen Werke. Die vier Romane, welche analysiert werden, sind Charlotte Brontes 'Jane Eyre' (1874) im Vergleich zu 'Wide Sargasso Sea' (1966) von Jean Rhys sowie Daniel Defoes 'Robinson Crusoe' (1719) im Vergleich zu J.M. Coetzees 'Foe' (1986). Das einführende Kapitel vermittelt ein theoretisches Grundgerüst zu den Themen Postkolonialismus und postkoloniale Literatur und diskutiert einige wichtige Aspekte und Konzepte der literarischen Praxis des 'writing back'. Der Fokus der Textanalyse liegt auf Jean Rhys' Neuinterpretation von Brontes berühmter Wahnsinnigen, Antoinette Cosway, Coetzees Version von Robinson Crusoes Begleiter Friday und der selbst eingeführten Erzählerin seiner Neufassung, Susan Barton. All diese Charaktere gehören unterrepräsentierten Gruppen in der klassischen kanonischen Literatur an, sei es durch ihr Geschlecht, ihre Rasse oder ihren sozialen Status. Durch einen Fokus auf diese marginalisierten Charaktere versuche ich Rückschlüsse auf die postkoloniale und zeitweise counter-diskursive Natur der Romane zu ziehen. Obwohl die beiden Adaptionen viele Merkmale von postkolonialer Literatur aufweisen, will diese Arbeit aufzeigen, dass eine Analyse der Abweichungen von festgelegten Definitionen nicht außer Acht gelassen werden darf. Der abschließende Teil meiner These beschäftigt sich damit, welche der zuvor diskutierten Themen und Methoden von postkolonialer Literatur in den analysierten Romanen auftreten. Zusätzlich will ich aufzeigen, warum eine Inversion von Peripherie und Zentrum eine derart wichtige Rolle in den vorliegenden Texten spielt und inwiefern ich mit meiner Interpretation der Romane zu einem offeneren Zugang zu postkolonialen 'rewritings' beitragen kann, welcher über das enge Konzept des 'Counter-Diskurs' hinausgeht. eng: This thesis explores how secondary characters in classical British literature transform into main characters in post-colonial rewritings. The four novels that are in the focus of my study are Charlotte Bronte’s 'Jane Eyre' (1874) in comparison with Jean Rhys’ rewriting 'Wide Sargasso Sea' (1966) and Daniel Defoe’s 'Robinson Crusoe' (1719) in comparison to J.M. Coetzee’s 'Foe' (1986). The introductory part of the thesis offers a basic theoretical framework of post-colonialism and its literature and discusses important aspects and themes of 'writing back'. The main focus of the analysis lies on Rhys' Creole version of Bronte's madwoman, Antoinette Cosway, Coetzee's version of Robinson Crusoe's companion Friday, and his newly introduced protagonist Susan Barton. By concentrating on characters that were treated as a marginalized minority in canonical literature and are given a voice in the rewritings I attempt to discuss the postcolonial and at times counter-discursive nature of the novels. Bearing in mind that the two rewritings which are in the centre of my study share certain characteristics of postcolonial literature, the assumption of this thesis is that it is equally important to explore aspects within the novels that do not meet researchers' definitions of post-colonial literature. The final part of my thesis discusses which of the previously defined themes of post-colonial literature play an important role in the novels, and how they are transferred into the stories. In addition, I attempt to comment on the importance of an inversion of periphery and center in the rewritings I analyzed, and explore in what way my reading of the two novels can be seen as a call for a more open interpretation of post-colonial rewritings that goes beyond merely viewing them as a counter discourse to the pretext.
