"O crime do professor de matemática", by Clarice Lispector, addresses the unconscious need for punishment arising from the feeling of guilt, which is an inexorable element of the human psyche. The man's mirroring in his pet leads him to an approximation of a possible awareness of this disorder, which culminates in the unavoidable abandonment of the dog. Based on Sigmund Freud's essays "Das Unheimliche" and "Das Unbehagen in der Kultur", we aim at understanding the origin of the doleful identification between these two characters in the narrated story, as well as the corollary of the culture that is responsible for the human sadness which the teacher is inevitably part of ; "O crime do professor de Matemática", de Clarice Lispector, aborda a necessidade inconsciente de punição advinda do sentimento de culpa, que constitui elemento inexorável da psique humana.

In general, translations are read as transparent replacements of an originally foreign source texts, without the reader being aware of the translation process, i.e. the translatedness of the text. But what happens in translating? Translation always means interpretation, according to the Brazilian translation theorist Rosemary Arrojo. Basing the analysis on two contos, namely "Amor" and "A bela e a fera" by Clarice Lispector and their respective translations into German by Curt Meyer-Clason and Sarita Brandt, this essay investigates translation strategies and the resulting interpretations as well as the visibility or invisibility of translation and translators when confronting the source texts with the target texts. Was aber geschieht beim Übersetzen?
