But although such skill was esteemed in medieval times, the language of ancient Rome was as various as the styles of slaves and masters.Latinity and Literary Society at Rome reaches back to the early Roman empire to examine attitudes toward latinity, reviewing the contested origins of scholarly Latin in the polemical arena of Roman literature. W. Martin Bloomer shows how that literature's reflections on correct and incorrect speech functioned as part of a wider understanding of social relations and national identity in Rome.Bloomer's investigation begins with questions about the sociology of Latin literature—what interests were served by the creation of high style and how literary stylization constituted a system of social decorum—and goes on to offer readings of selected texts. Through studies of works ranging from Varro's De lingua latina to the verse fables of Augustine's freeman Phaedrus to the Annals of Tacitus, Bloomer examines conflicting claims to style not simply to set true Latin against vulgarism but also to ask who is excluding whom, why, and by what means.These texts exemplify the ways Roman literature employs representations of, and reflections on, proper and improper language to mirror the interests of specific groups who wished to maintain or establish their place in Roman society. They show how writers sought to influence the fundamental social issue of who had the power to confer legitimacy of speech and how their works used claims of linguistic propriety to reinforce the definition of "Romanness."Through Bloomer's study latinity emerges as a contested field of identity and social polemic heretofore unrecognized in classical scholarship. Building a National Literature boldly takes issue with traditional literary criticism for its failure to explain how literature as a body is created and shaped by institutional forces. Peter Uwe Hohendahl approaches literary history by focusing on the material and ideological structures that determine the canonical status of writers and works. He examines important elements in the making of a national literature, including the political and literary public sphere, the theory and practice of literary criticism, and the emergence of academic criticism as literary history. Hohendahl considers such key aspects of the process in Germany as the rise of liberalism and nationalism, the delineation of the borders of German literature, the idea of its history, the understanding of its cultural function, and the notion of a canon of major and minor authors.

"The title for this book, "a World of Fiction," has three meanings, and these have continued to underpin and shape the book. The most straightforward concerns the global origins of fiction in nineteenth-century Australian newspapers. While British, Australian, and American works dominate, and have been my focus, these newspapers include fiction from many other places: Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Italy, New Zealand, Russia, South Africa, Sweden, and more. An even wider range of geographical locations are evoked in the inscription of stories, which are presented as coming from the above countries and far beyond: Belgium, Burma, Chile, China, Cuba, Egypt, the list goes on. This sheer multitude of origins, real and inscribed--and the frequency of global voyages in these stories--indicates a pronounced geographical focus in the creation, publication, and reception of colonial newspaper fiction. Given that many of the original readers for these stories would have recently arrived in the colonies from elsewhere, this global consciousness suggests the role that newspaper fiction played in connecting new, Australian spaces and lives to preexisting conceptions of the world and readers' place in it"--

Lesen und Erzählen gehören zu den elementaren Kulturtechniken des Menschen. Dieses Buch bringt beide Perspektiven zusammen und zeigt, wie Leser ihre individuellen Lebensgeschichten über die Rezeption von Literatur verhandeln und sich dabei im Spiegel literarischer Texte selbst entwerfen. Damit wird zugleich eine Einführung in die aktuelle Identitätsforschung gegeben. Zudem wird deutlich, dass Lesen - und vielmehr noch die Reflexion bewegender Leseerfahrungen - gerade in einer Zeit, in der biographische Selbstentwürfe zunehmend vor neue Herausforderungen gestellt werden, eine bedeutsame Ressource für die Verhandlung der eigenen Identität darstellt.

With the expansion of the publishing industry between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, reading for pleasure became possible for an increasing number of people, not just the wealthy and educated. The growth of the book trade produced, alongside elite literature, a parallel popular literature. Lori Humphrey Newcomb examines the proliferation of romances in early modern England, as well as their vilification by elite writers. Using as her case study Robert Greene's Pandosto (1585), an Elizabethan prose romance that inspired Shakespeare's late play, The Winter's Tale, she shows that the two forms of literature influenced each other profoundly. Because Shakespeare's works are considered timeless literary achievements, critics have distanced his plays from his romantic sources--a separation that until now has gone unquestioned. Newcomb undermines this assumption, providing a fascinating account of an early bestseller's incarnations over 250 years of literary history.

Armstrong's view, and can model democratic interaction by a community unconstrained by the need to build consensus but aware of the dangers of violence, irrationality, and anarchy. Reading requires mutual recognition but need not culminate in agreement, Armstrong says; instead, the social potential of reading arises from the active exchange of attitudes, ideas, and values between author and reader and among readers. Play and the Politics of Reading, which has important implications for education, draws on Wolfgang Iser's notion of free play to offer a valuable response to social problems.Armstrong finds that Joseph Conrad, E. M. Forster, Henry James, and James Joyce provide apt examples of the politics of reading, for reasons both literary and political. In making the transition from realism to modernism, these authors experimented with narrative strategies that seek simultaneously to represent the world and to question the means of representation itself. The formal ambiguities and complexities of such texts as Howards End and Ulysses are ways of staging for the reader the difficulties and opportunities of a world of differences. Innovative formal structures challenge readers to reconsider their assumptions and beliefs about social issues.

Asking what Indian readers chose to read and why, In Another Country shows how readers of the English novel transformed the literary and cultural influences of empire. She further demonstrates how Indian novelists writing in English, from Krupa Satthianadhan to Salman Rushdie, took an alien form in an alien language and used it to address local needs. Taken together in this manner, reading and writing reveal the complex ways in which culture is continually translated and transformed in a colonial and postcolonial context.

Biographical note: Ine Van linthout, Erasmushogeschool Brussel undVrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgien. Diese Studie untersucht die Buchpolitik der NS-Zeit im Kontext der modernen Massenmedien. Gestützt auf zahlreiche publizierte und unpublizierte Quellen, rekonstruiert sie die Buchförderungspolitik im Spannungsfeld von politischen Interessen und langfristig wirksamen Traditionsbindungen, von ideologischen Imperativen und marktwirtschaftlichen Konditionen, von totalitären Ansprüchen und einer modernen, ausdifferenzierten Gesellschaft. Zugleich dokumentiert die Analyse die Auswirkungen dieser Spannungen in den z.T. widersprüchlichen literaturpolitischen Diskursen über das auch zwischen 1933 und 1945 diversifizierte literarische Feld. This study presents an in-depth examination of book policies during the Nazi era in the context of modern mass media and is based on a number of published and unpublished sources. It reconstructs the policies of book sponsorship in the areas of conflict oscillating between political interests and long-standing ties with tradition, between ideological imperatives and market-based terms, between totalitarian pretenses and a modern, discerning society. At the same time the analysis documents the effects of this conflict in the occasionally contradictory policy discourses about the diversified field of literature between 1933 und 1945.
