This book brings together recent research bt IMF staff on how the region's countries are grappling with these challenges. It rigorously analyzes policy alternatives for a range of relevant topics-including the implications of changing demographic trends for growth and unemployment, determinants of inflation, financial-sector reform and Islamic banking, fiscal sustainability in oil-dependent economies, exchange rate and trade arrangements, and impediments to foreign direct investment. The book's overall theme is that self-sustaining and faster growth can be achieved through compehensive structural reforms and closer collaboration between the region's policymakers and the international community

The 14 papers that comprise this book provide a comprehensive review of the IMF's work on social safety nets. The book is made up of three parts. Part I provides a broad overview of the social concerns in structural policy and the basic work related to social safety nets. Part II deals with the design of social safety nets. Part III provides case studies on nine countries from different parts of the world. The reade will find these studies particularly informative and, I hope, will appreciate the scope of the IMF'f work in this area. At the time these studies were written, all the writers except one were IMF staff members. The exception, Ravi Kanbur was with the World Bank

The volume contains a series of workshops designed to introduce readers to the process of formulating a hypothetical macroeconomic and structural adjustment program, which is a central element in the financial programmiing courses offered by the IMF Institute. In addition to elaborating key concepts for the four major sectoral accounts, the workshops are designed to help readers develop step-by-step a reference scenario for Sri Lanka based on the assumption that policies will remain unchanged during the selected program year of 1991. Based on the diagnosis of financial and structural imbalances that emerge from the reference scenario, readers can then elaborate a program scenario for 1991 and the medium term, focusing principally on the macroeconomic aspects of a financial program, but also identifying the main elements of structural reform The data used in the workshops have been drawn from official sources and the IMF's data banks such as International Financial Statistics; in some instances, the presentation has been adapted to facilitate exposition

The emerging literature on experimental methods in connection with economic inequality has shed fresh light on how to think about inequality, how important issues of equality are in comparison with other economic objectives and how individuals incorporate criteria of equality and fairness into their own decisions. This volume covers a wide range of topics in the field of income distribution and extends the approach to related issues such as mobility and attitudes to risk. The selection of papers includes both participatory experiments - where individuals respond to economic incentives - and que

"What is inequality? In recent years there has been an explosion of interest in the subject that has yielded a substantial body of formal tools and results for income-distribution analysis. But does the standard axiomatic structure coincide with public perceptions of inequality? Or is the economist's concept of inequality a thing apart, perpetuated through serial brainwashing in the way the subject is studied and taught? Amiel and Cowell examine the evidence from a large international questionnaire experiment using student respondents. Along with basic 'cake-sharing' issues, related questions involving social welfare rankings, the relationship between inequality and overall income growth and the meaning of poverty comparisons are considered."--Jacket
