"Faulkner, Aviation, and Modern War frames William Faulkner's airplane narratives against major scenes of the early 20th century: the Great War, the rise of European fascism in the 1920s and 30s, the Second World War, and the aviation arms race extending from the Wright Flyer in 1903 into the Cold War era. Placing biographical accounts of Faulkner's time in the Royal Air Force Canada against analysis of such works as Soldiers' Pay (1926), "All the Dead Pilots" (1931), Pylon (1935), and A Fable (1954), this book situates Faulkner's aviation writing within transatlantic historical contexts that have not been sufficiently appreciated in Faulkner's work. Michael Zeitlin unpacks a broad selection of Faulkner's novels, stories, film treatments, essays, book reviews, and letters to outline Faulkner's complex and ambivalent relationship to the ideologies of masculine performance and martial heroism in an age dominated by industrialism and military technology"--

Commercial aviation is an important part of modern life with flight training being one of its backbones. To foster an airline's financial viability, investments in sustainable and cost-efficient technologies need to be made. Prior literature suggests that Virtual Reality applications can be used for training purposes effectively while yielding substantial economic benefits. Thus far however, research focused on training of inexperienced, novice flight students. It is the aim of this paper to analyze the didactical, economic, and environmental potential of Virtual Reality for flight trainings of experienced pilots and identify potential use cases within airlines' training operations. Five expert interviews are conducted and evaluated by means of qualitative content analysis. The results indicate that Virtual Reality applications are favorable in several training-related use cases. Apart from didactical advantages, environmental benefits such as a CO2-reductionmay also be obtained. Due to regulatory as well as technical challenges however, prospects of implementing Virtual Reality in airlines are still limited at present. That is why at this early stage, Virtual Reality is recommended for theoretical training only, with simulator training of experienced pilots still being a developmental area. Economic risks consist of dependence of vendors as well as high initial investment costs.

This paper offers a comprehensive analysis of the historical evolution and the current state of the aviation industry, with a particular emphasis on the critical need for this sector to decarbonize. It delves into emerging propulsion technologies such as battery electric and hydrogen-based systems, assessing their potential impact on sustainability within the aviation sector. Special attention is devoted to the global regulatory framework, notably carbon offsetting and emission reduction scheme for international aviation, which encapsulates initiatives such as lower carbon aviation fuels and sustainable aviation fuels. Examining the environmental challenges facing aviation, the paper underscores the necessity for a balanced and comprehensive strategy that integrates various approaches to achieve sustainable solutions. By addressing both the historical context and contemporary advances, the paper aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the complexities surrounding aviation's decarbonization journey, acknowledging the industry's strides while recognizing the ongoing challenges in the pursuit of sustainability.
