Das vorliegende Dokument ist eine leicht überarbeitete Fassung meiner Magisterarbeit (Universität Tübingen 2002), in der ich die Bedeutung und vielfältige Darstellung der Erinnerung in Caryl Phillips’ Romanen der Neunzigerjahre Cambridge (1991), Crossing the River (1993) und The Nature of Blood (1997) beleuchte. Das Sujet der Erinnerung durchdringt die Romane sowohl in ihrer thematischen Entwicklung als auch in ihrer formalen Ausgestaltung. Darüber hinaus ist eine Entwicklung der Erinnerungsthematik in Phillips’ Romanen zu konstatieren. Nach einer kurzen Verortung der Romane in Phillips' Werk und einer theoretischen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Komplex Erinnerung und Gedächtnis (v.a. in Anlehnung an die Schriften von Aleida und Jan Assmann) widmet sich die Arbeit ganz der vergleichenden Analyse der Romane. Verhandelte Themen sind u.a. Phillips' Verhandlung der Dichotomie "Geschichte-Erinnerung", von Gedächtnisformen und -modi, Täter- und Opfergedächtnissen und den Möglichkeiten und Grenzen eines kulturellen Gedächtnisses. ; This study is a slightly revised version of my MA thesis (University of Tübingen, 2002), in which I explore the function and depiction of memory in Caryl Phillips's novels of the 1990s Cambridge, Crossing the River and The Nature of Blood. The subject of memory permeates the novels both thematically and formally, and develops from novel to novel. After a short contextualisation and an introduction to my theoretical framework (based on Aleida and Jan Assmann's theorisations of memory), three analytical chapters are devoted to my comparative readings of the novels. Aspects negotiated are Phillips's approach to the dichotomic relationship of history and memory, diverse forms and modes of memory, the memory of victims and perpetrators, and the possibilities and constraints of a cultural memory.
