Artisans and artists began to publish handbooks, guides, treatises, tip sheets, graphs and recipe books rather than simply pass along their knowledge in the workshop. And they tried to articulate what the new knowledge meant. The popularity of these texts coincided with the founding of a "new philosophy" that sought to investigate nature in a new way. Smith shows how this moment began in the unceasing trials of the craft workshop, and ended in the experimentation of the natural scientific laboratory. These epistemological developments have continued to the present day and still inform how we think about scientific knowledge."

    How and why early modern European artisans began to record their knowledge. In From Lived Experience to the Written Word, Pamela H. Smith considers how and why, beginning in 1400 CE, European craftspeople began to write down their making practices. Rather than simply passing along knowledge in the workshop, these literate artisans chose to publish handbooks, guides, treatises, tip sheets, graphs, and recipe books, sparking early technical writing and laying the groundwork for how we think about scientific knowledge today. Focusing on metalworking from 1400–1800 CE, Smith looks at the nature of craft knowledge and skill, studying present-day and historical practices, objects, recipes, and artisanal manuals. From these sources, she considers how we can reconstruct centuries of largely lost knowledge. In doing so, she aims not only to unearth the techniques, material processes, and embodied experience of the past but also to gain insight into the lifeworld of artisans and their understandings of matter

    The Hindu texts known as caste puranas (jāti purāṇas) provide the mythopolitical foundation for many of India’s castes. These puranas may be said to ‘gather’ a community audience, and such castes themselves may be thought of as object-oriented gatherings whose affective, ideological, and custodial attachments to their respective jati puranas also include the deification of these texts as revered objects. A caste does more than interpret such a puranic text; the text is continuously made, re-made, and circulated in conjunction with the community’s sociopolitical circumstances. The Suthars (hereditary carpenters) of Gujarat afford a special look at the mythopolitics of caste: Claiming to have ‘lost’ their ancient and ‘original’ foundational text, the Vishwakarma Purana, many in the Suthar community seek to recuperate it in new compilations, performances, and media. Tracing the mediations of this and other puranas, we argue, can deepen the politico-historical analysis of caste mobilizations and their mythopolitics.

    "The civic religious drama of late medieval England--financed, produced, and performed by craftspeople--offers one of the earliest forms of written literature by a non-elite group in Europe. In this innovative study, Nicole R. Rice and Margaret Aziza Pappano trace an artisanal perspective on medieval and early modern civic relations, analyzing selected plays from the cities of York and Chester individually and from a comparative perspective, in dialogue with civic records. Positing a complex view of relations among merchants, established artisans, wage laborers, and women, the two authors show how artisans used the cycle plays to not only represent but also perform their interests, suggesting that the plays were the major means by which the artisans participated in civic polity. In addition to examining selected plays in the context of artisanal social and economic practices, Rice and Pappano also address relations between performance and historical transformation, considering how these plays, staged for nearly two centuries, responded to changes in historical conditions. In particular, they pay attention to how the pressures of Reformist governments influenced the meaning and performance of the civic religious drama in both towns. Ultimately, the authors provide a new perspective on how artisans can be viewed as social actors and agents in England in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.     Die Herausgeberin hat hier eine faszinierende Auswahl an Fotografien zu alten, teilweise schon verschwundenen Handwerkerberufen zusammengstellt, die vom Ende des 19. bis zum Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts reicht. (Heidi Debschütz) Bürstenbinder, Korbmacher, Nagelschmied ...: Die Welt der handwerklichen Arbeit hat sich enorm verändert und viele Berufe von einst gibt es sogar gar nicht mehr. Die Herausgeberin, freie Autorin und bekannt z.B. durch ihr thematisch verwandtes Buch "Von Kaffeeriechern, Abtrittanbietern und Fischbeinreißern" (ID-G 4/11), hat hier eine einzigartige Auswahl an Fotos von unterschiedlichen Fotografen zusammengestellt, die sich vom Ende des 19. bis zum Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts erstreckt - Momentaufnahmen, die das damalige Arbeitsleben und den Wandel der Arbeitswelt eindrucksvoll dokumentieren. Der Leser sieht Bilder von einer Fußballfabrik im Jahr 1931, einen Sattlerlehrling am Nähpferd im Jahre 1936, einen Schlosser im Jahr 1912 am Schraubstock, Wäscherinnen in einer Handwäscherei der 1920er-Jahre, aber auch Kassiererinnen in der Hauptkasse einer Bank im Jahr 1979 oder eine Cutterin in den 1950er-Jahren. Die Fotos vermitteln ein sehr authentisches Bild, sie "atmen" Geschichte und vermitteln schweigend ihre Botschaft vom Wandel der Zeit. Ein sehr gelungenes Buch. (2) (Heidi Debschütz)

    "The civic religious drama of late medieval England--financed, produced, and performed by craftspeople--offers one of the earliest forms of written literature by a non-elite group in Europe. In this innovative study, Nicole R. Rice and Margaret Aziza Pappano trace an artisanal perspective on medieval and early modern civic relations, analyzing selected plays from the cities of York and Chester individually and from a comparative perspective, in dialogue with civic records. Positing a complex view of relations among merchants, established artisans, wage laborers, and women, the two authors show how artisans used the cycle plays to not only represent but also perform their interests, suggesting that the plays were the major means by which the artisans participated in civic polity. In addition to examining selected plays in the context of artisanal social and economic practices, Rice and Pappano also address relations between performance and historical transformation, considering how these plays, staged for nearly two centuries, responded to changes in historical conditions. In particular, they pay attention to how the pressures of Reformist governments influenced the meaning and performance of the civic religious drama in both towns. Ultimately, the authors provide a new perspective on how artisans can be viewed as social actors and agents in England in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
