    Although the relationship of Greco-Roman historians with their readerships has attracted much scholarly attention, classicists principally focus on individual historians, while there has been no collective work on the matter. The editors of this volume aspire to fill this gap and gather papers which offer an overall view of the Greco-Roman readership and of its interaction with ancient historians. The authors of this book endeavor to define the physiognomy of the audience of history in the Roman Era both by exploring the narrative arrangement of ancient historical prose and by using sources in which Greco-Roman intellectuals address the issue of the readership of history. Ancient historians shaped their accounts taking into consideration their readers' tastes, and this is evident on many different levels, such as the way a historian fashions his authorial image, addresses his readers, or uses certain compositional strategies to elicit the readers' affective and cognitive responses to his messages. The papers of this volume analyze these narrative aspects and contextualize them within their socio-political environment in order to reveal the ways ancient readerships interacted with and affected Greco-Roman historical prose.

    Das Liedoeuvre des Berliner Komponisten Johann Friedrich Reichardt (1752–1814) ist bekannt für sein innovatives Text-Musik-Verhältnis. Die Studie beschreibt dieses Verhältnis anhand von Reichardts Vertonungen deutschsprachiger Texte, die sich an Versmaßen der Antike orientieren und damit für die Liedkomposition um 1790 eine Reihe von Problemen aufwerfen. Autoren sind u.a. Herder, Goethe, Schiller, Voß oder Hölty. Das umfangreichste Kapitel gilt Reichardts zentraler Klopstock-Auseinandersetzung, die mit derjenigen Glucks und Neefes konfrontiert wird. Reichardt nähert sich dem lieduntypischen Bau und Inhalt dieser Dichtungen durchaus konventionsgebunden. Ergebnis sind dadurch aber gerade überraschend experimentelle musikalische Problemlösungen mit stilhistorischer Brisanz in der wichtigen Phase kurz vor der Erfindung des romantischen Kunstlieds.

The best ancient minds - Plato, Aristotle, the physician Galen, and others - struggled to understand the meaning of dreams. With Dreams and Experience in Classical Antiquity the renowned ancient historian William Harris turns his attention to oneiric matters. This cultural history of dreams in antiquity draws on both contemporary post-Freudian science and careful critiques of the ancient texts. Harris traces the history of characteristic forms of dream-description and relates them both to the ancient experience of dreaming and to literary and religious imperatives. In verständlich und anschaulich geschriebenen Texten stellen die Autoren dieses Bandes die Frage nach der Aktualität antiker Ideen und Konzepte in den Wissenschaften und den kreativen Künsten, in der Politik und in der Alltagskultur. Die Beiträge sind das Resultat der Veranstaltung "Antike und Gegenwart", eines Gemeinschaftsprojekts der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Akademie der Künste, Berlin. Das Symposion hat gezeigt, daß Interdisziplinarität nicht nur den aktiven Austausch akademischer Disziplinen untereinander, sondern darüber hinaus auch das produktive Zusammenspiel der Wissenschaften und der Künste bedeuten kann.     Dieses Buch unternimmt einen Zugang zu Augustins großer Schrift „Über den Gottesstaat" (De civitate Dei) durch Berücksichtigung der dort angewandten rhetorischen Technik. Die Bedeutung und Tragweite philosophisch-theologischer Aussagen zum Verhältnis von Mensch und Gott, zu Freiheit und Verantwortung und zur christlichen Ethik wird durch Analyse ihrer argumentativen Funktion und Kontextbindung präzise bestimmt. Um Augustins Argumentationstechnik in einen größeren bildungsgeschichtlichen Zusammenhang zu stellen, werden seine Bildungsreflexion und die Tradition der antiken Rhetorik ins Auge gefaßt. This book approaches Augustine’s great work 0De civitate Dei0(The City of God) by considering the rhetorical techniques employed in it. It determines precisely the significance and consequences of Augustine's philosophical and theological statements on the relationship between humans and God, on freedom and responsibility and on Christian ethics by analyzing their argumentative function and contextual connection. The techniques of Augustine’s argumentation are then placed in a wider historical educational context by considering his reflection on education and the tradition of classical rhetoric. Bruno-Snell-Prize 2007 awarded to Christian Tornau.

    Although ancient hope has attracted much scholarly attention in the past, this is the first book-length discussion of the topic. The introduction offers a systematic discussion of the semantics of Greek elpis and Latin spes and addresses the difficult question of whether hope -ancient and modern- is an emotion. On the other hand, the 16 contributions deal with specific aspects of hope in Greek and Latin literature, history and art, including Pindar's poetry, Greek tragedy, Thucydides, Virgil's epic and Tacitus' Historiae. The volume also explores from a historical perspective the hopes of slaves in antiquity, the importance of hope for the enhancement of stereotypes about the barbarians, and the depiction of hope in visual culture, providing thereby a useful tool not only for classicist but also for philosophers, cultural historians and political scientists.

    Dieses Buch unternimmt einen Zugang zu Augustins großer Schrift „Über den Gottesstaat" (De civitate Dei) durch Berücksichtigung der dort angewandten rhetorischen Technik. Die Bedeutung und Tragweite philosophisch-theologischer Aussagen zum Verhältnis von Mensch und Gott, zu Freiheit und Verantwortung und zur christlichen Ethik wird durch Analyse ihrer argumentativen Funktion und Kontextbindung präzise bestimmt. Um Augustins Argumentationstechnik in einen größeren bildungsgeschichtlichen Zusammenhang zu stellen, werden seine Bildungsreflexion und die Tradition der antiken Rhetorik ins Auge gefaßt. This book approaches Augustine’s great work 0De civitate Dei0(The City of God) by considering the rhetorical techniques employed in it. It determines precisely the significance and consequences of Augustine's philosophical and theological statements on the relationship between humans and God, on freedom and responsibility and on Christian ethics by analyzing their argumentative function and contextual connection. The techniques of Augustine’s argumentation are then placed in a wider historical educational context by considering his reflection on education and the tradition of classical rhetoric.     Although ancient hope has attracted much scholarly attention in the past, this is the first book-length discussion of the topic. The introduction offers a systematic discussion of the semantics of Greek elpis and Latin spes and addresses the difficult question of whether hope -ancient and modern- is an emotion. On the other hand, the 16 contributions deal with specific aspects of hope in Greek and Latin literature, history and art, including Pindar's poetry, Greek tragedy, Thucydides, Virgil's epic and Tacitus' Historiae. The volume also explores from a historical perspective the hopes of slaves in antiquity, the importance of hope for the enhancement of stereotypes about the barbarians, and the depiction of hope in visual culture, providing thereby a useful tool not only for classicist but also for philosophers, cultural historians and political scientists.

    In the last few years a reconsideration of the past of the ancients and of the concepts correlated to it (e.g. the ʻclassicalʼ) has been important to many scholars. The present volume adds to the range of perspectives on the antique by expanding research to include different, hitherto unexplored spheres, whether that be chronological perspectives or disciplinary ones, as well as by opening up the discussion to include textual types that previous studies have treated little or not at all. Fourteen essays on various fields aim at defining the categories in which the past is constructed, thought, valued, functionalized and redrawn. They concentrate on the category of the ʻantiqueʼ and the role it plays in texts and authors, with specific reference to the ʻtopicalizationʼ, conceptualization and renegotiation of the ʻantiqueʼ and the ʻancientsʼ. Im Diskurs mit der philosophischen Ästhetik seit der Antike verdeutlicht Hartmut Mayer die fundamentale Bedeutung der Mimesis für die Architekturtheorie. Im Rückgriff auf Nietzsche und Adorno interpretiert er Mimesis im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert als Permanenz der querelle des anciens et des modernes und einer »Verleiblichung« ästhetischer Prinzipien.

    Ancient cultures have left written evidence of a variety of scientific texts. But how can/should they be translated? Is it possible to use modern concepts (and terminology) in their translation and which consequences result from this practice? Scholars of various disciplines discuss the practice of translating ancient scientific texts and present examples of these texts and their translations. Die Übersetzung antiker wissenschaftlicher Texte stellt Studierende wie Forschende immer wieder vor besondere Herausforderungen, auch deshalb, weil eine systematische Referenzgrundlage für den Umgang mit diesen Texten bislang fehlt. Im Rahmen eines von der Fritz Thyssen Stiftung geförderten Projektes haben einschlägige Wissenschaftshistoriker und -historikerinnen der Ägyptologie, Altorientalistik und Altphilologie grundsätzliche Probleme von Übersetzungen und mögliche Lösungen diskutiert. Das Ergebnis ist ein Methodenhandbuch, das Studierenden und Forschenden aus den entsprechenden Philologien, Natur-, Geschichts- und Kulturwissenschaften Grundlagen der Übersetzungspraxis und -methodik vermittelt. Mit ausgewählten Fallbeispielen aus den Bereichen der antiken Heilkunde, Astronomie, Astrologie und Mathematik, mit fachspezifischen Hinweisen auf Übersetzungs- und Kommentierungswege sowie mit fachbezogenen Übersichten über Hilfsmittel wird das Übersetzen und das Verständnis und die Bewertung bereits vorhandener Übersetzungen antiker wissenschaftlicher Texte erleichtert.
