    No longer at home in Russia, but not quite assimilated into the American mainstream, the daily lives of Russian immigrants are fueled by a combustible mix of success and alienation. Simon Reznikov, the Boston-based immigrant protagonist of Maxim D. Shrayer’s A Russian Immigrant, is restless. Unresolved feelings about his Jewish (and American) present and his Russian (and Soviet) past prevent Reznikov from easily putting down roots in his new country. A visit to a decaying summer resort in the Catskills, now populated by Jewish ghosts of Soviet history, which include a famous émigré writer, reveals to Reznikov that he, too, is a prisoner of his past. An expedition to Prague in search of clues for an elusive Jewish writer’s biography exposes Reznikov’s own inability to move on. A chance reunion with a former Russian lover, now also an immigrant living in an affluent part of Connecticut, unearths memories of Reznikov’s last Soviet summer while reanimating many contradictors of a mixed, Jewish-Russian marriage.Told both linearly and non-linearly, with elements of suspense, mystery and crime, these three interconnected novellas gradually reveal many layers of the characters’ Russian, Jewish, and Soviet identities. Vectors of love and desire, nostalgia and amnesia, violence and forgiveness, politics and aesthetics guide Shrayer’s immigrant characters while also disorienting them in their new American lives. Set in Providence, New Haven and Boston, but also in places of the main character’s pilgrimages such as Estonia and Bohemia, Shrayer’s book weaves together a literary manifesto of Russian Jews in America

    When anti-Semitism is seen as a global phenomenon, this is often associated with a tendency to universalize the Shoah in particular. Generalizable standards are sought to compare memories and ideologies of contempt for humanity. In Germany, such approaches often serve to level out the specificity of German guilt and thus to have a publicly exculpatory effect. Using the debate about Achille Mbembe as an example, the problems of a memory striving towards universalization are discussed. As a contrast, the work of the Anne Frank Educational Center is presented, in which the exhibition "Anne Frank. More Tomorrow" intends to focus attention on the relationship of the personal to the historically concrete. Wenn Antisemitismus als globales Phänomen betrachtet wird, ist damit häufig auch eine Tendenz zur Universalisierung insbesondere der Shoah verbunden. Es wird nach verallgemeinerbaren Maßstäben gesucht, um Erinnerungen und Ideologien der Menschenverachtung zu vergleichen. In Deutschland dienen solche Ansätze oftmals zu einer Nivellierung der Besonderheit der deutschen Schuld und wirken damit öffentlich entlastend. Am Beispiel der Debatte um Achille Mbembe diskutiert die Probleme eines zur Universalisierung strebenden Erinnerns. Als Kontrast wird die Arbeit der Bildungsstätte Anne Frank vorgestellt, in der mit der Ausstellung "Anne Frank. Morgen mehr die Aufmerksamkeit auf die persönliche Beziehung zum historisch Konkreten gerichtet werden soll.

    A scholarly and thought-provoking work that places Jewish humor at the center of a discourse about Jewish and German relations through most of the twentieth century.At Wit’s End explores the fascinating discourse on Jewish wit in the twentieth century when the Jewish joke became the subject of serious humanistic inquiry and inserted itself into the cultural and political debates among Germans and Jews against the ideologically charged backdrop of anti-Semitism, the Jewish question, and the Holocaust.The first in-depth study to explore the Jewish joke as a crucial rhetorical figure in larger cultural debates in Germany, author Louis Kaplan presents an engrossing and lucid work of scholarship that examines how "der jüdische Witz" (referring to both Jewish wit and jokes) was utilized differently in a number of texts, from the Weimar Republic to the rise of National Socialism, and how it was re-introduced into the public sphere after the Holocaust with the controversial publication of Salcia Landmann’s collection of Jewish jokes in the reparations era (Wiedergutmachung). Kaplan reviews the claims made about the Jewish joke and its provocative laughter by notable writers from a variety of ideological perspectives, demonstrating how their reflections on this complex cultural trope enable a better understanding of German–Jewish intercultural relations and their eventual breakdown in the Third Reich. He also illustrates how selfcritical and self-ironic Jewish Witz maintained a fraught and ambivalent relationship with anti-Semitism.In reviewing this critical and traumatic moment in modern German–Jewish history through the deadly discourse on the Jewish joke, At Wit’s End includes chapters on the virulent Austrian anti-Semitic racial theorist Arthur Trebitsch, the Nazi racial propagandist Siegfried Kadner, the German Marxist cultural historian Eduard Fuchs, the Jewish diasporic historian Erich Kahler, and the Jewish cabaret impresario Kurt Robitschek, among others.     Das Buch befragt die deutsche Literatur- und Geistesgeschichte nach der Verdrängung der jüdischen Tradition und markiert die Lücken, die durch die Vertreibung der geistigen Repräsentanten des Judentums aus dem deutschen Sprachraum gerissen worden sind. Als in Deutschland gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts uneingeschränkte Bewunderung für das antike Griechentum aufkam, wurde gleichzeitig das sich gerade der europäischen Aufklärung öffnende Judentum auf dem Schauplatz der Religionskritik vehement bekämpft. In diesem Kontext ist der aggressive Antijudaismus zu verstehen, mit dem sich Goethe und Schiller gegen die Sinai-Offenbarung und deren legendären Mittler Moses wandten. Beginnend mit Winckelmann hat die deutsche Klassik einen neuen Legitimationsdiskurs geschaffen, der unter Rückgriff auf den antiken Polytheismus das ,produktive Individuum' und die ,wachsende Natur' zu seinen zentralen Kategorien machte und damit den geltenden Monotheismus zu verdrängen suchte. Im Gegensatz dazu suchten Mendelssohn und Heine die Position einer deutsch-jüdischen Moderne zu etablieren. Das Buch verfolgt, wie der ,Weltanschauungskampf' gegen den Monotheismus zum ,völkischen' Antisemitismus des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts führte und in der Shoa mündete, was die Verdrängung der jüdischen Tradition aus dem kulturellen Gedächtnis der Deutschen zur Folge hatte

    Das Handbuch des Antisemitismus widmet sich allen Aspekten der Judenfeindschaft von den Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart und ohne geographische Begrenzung. Im siebten Band geben in knapp 300 Lemmata 120 Autoren einen Überblick über den kulturellen Antisemitismus im Film und Theater, in der Literatur und Kunst. Der „ewige Jude“ der Ahasver-Legende wird ebenso thematisiert wie die historische Figur „Jud Süß“, Informationen zum Film „Schindlers Liste“ finden sich neben Erläuterungen zur Judenfeindschaft in mittelalterlichen Passionsspielen und den Kontroversen um „Nackt unter Wölfen“ oder Wilhelm Buschs Bildergeschichte „Plisch und Plum“. Romane und Bühnenstücke, Filme und Werke der Bildenden Kunst werden als Vehikel der Judenfeindschaft behandelt. Einträge zu literarischen Versuchen, den Holocaust zu verstehen oder dem Antisemitismus zu wehren, runden das Werk ab The Handbook of Anti-Semitism compiles the present state of knowledge on the phenomenon of Judaeophobia without limits of time or space. The seventh volume includes nearly 700 entries that survey cultural anti-Semitism in film, theater, literature, and the visual arts. It examines the trope of the “Eternal Jew” as well as “Jud Süß;” it shows how novels, films and artwork were used as vehicles for anti-Semitism

    Diese Studie untersucht basierend auf linguistischen Klassifikationen von Vergleichen und Metaphern strukturelle, konzeptuelle und funktionale Charakteristika von NS-Vergleichen und NS-Metaphern. Sie diskutiert jene Analogiebildungen anhand von Äußerungen im öffentlichen Kommunikationsraum hinsichtlich ihrer sprachlichen Realisierung, ihrer funktionalen Dimension sowie der darauffolgenden öffentlichen Reaktionen. Darüber hinaus liefert die Untersuchung Ergebnisse einer Korpusstudie zu NS-Vergleichen und NS-Metaphern innerhalb von über 10.000 E-Mails, die zwischen 2002 und 2014 bei der Botschaft des Staates Israel und beim Zentralrat der Juden in Deutschland eingingen The study uses linguistic classifications of comparisons and metaphors to examine the structural, conceptual, and functional specifics of Nazi comparisons and metaphors. Drawing on statements in the world of public communications and a comprehensive corpus analysis, the author reveals the quality of such analogies and situates them among various expressions of anti-Semitism

In the following decade she became the most influential American woman next to Eleanor Roosevelt. Thompson's extensive network of friends and collaborators included prominent personalities on both sides of the Atlantic: Hamilton Fish Armstrong, Lion Feuchtwanger, Marcel Fodor, Ben Huebsch, Annette Kolb, Fritz Kortner, Thomas Mann, H. L. Mencken, Helmuth James von Moltke, Eugenie Schwarzwald, Christa Winsloe, and Carl Zuckmayer. Her prolific public engagement against Hitler and on behalf of refugees and exiled writers was based on the conviction that one was not possible without the other.
