    The volume, which has emerged from an international conference of the same title, unites a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary contributions on invasions of Goths and other Germanic tribes into the Roman Empire, focusing primarily on the third-century CE. The newly discovered fragments of the lost work Scythica by the third-century historian Dexippus of Athens, the so-called Scythica Vindobonensia alias Dexippus Vindobonensis, which survived in a Greek palimpsest kept in the Austrian National Library in Vienna, have great impact on the study of this field. The contributions explore the Vienna fragments in their historical and historiographical contexts, from the Roman to the Byzantine Era, and the history of the invasions themselves. Der Band, der aus einer internationalen Tagung gleichen Namens hervorgeht, vereinigt verschiedene disziplinäre und interdisziplinäre Perspektiven auf das Thema der gotischen und anderen germanischen Einfälle ins Römische Reich, besonders im 3. Jahrhundert n. Chr., das durch die neuen Fragmente aus dem verlorenen Werk Skythika des antiken Historikers Dexippos von Athen, die sog. Scythica Vindobonensia alias Dexippus Vindobonensis, die rezent in einem griechischen Palimpsest der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek in Wien entdeckt wurden, wichtige Impulse erhalten hat. In this volume each of the eleven chapters discusses one of the heroines: Clytemnestra, Hecuba, Medea, Iphigenia, Alcestis, Antigone Electra, Deianeira, Phaedra, Creusa and Helen. The book focuses on characterisation and the motivations of the women, as well as on those of the male playwrights, and offers multiple viewpoints and critiques that enable readers to understand the context of each play and form their own views. Four core themes bridge the depictions of the heroines: the socio-political dynamic of ancient Greek expectations of women and their roles in society, the conflict of masculinity versus femininity, the alternation of defiance and submission, and the interplay between deceit and rhetoric. Each chapter offers clear descriptions of plot and mythical background, and builds on the text of the plays to enable reflections on language and performance. All technical terms are explained and key topics or references are pulled out into box features that provide further background information.     The volume, which has emerged from an international conference of the same title, unites a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary contributions on invasions of Goths and other Germanic tribes into the Roman Empire, focusing primarily on the third-century CE. The newly discovered fragments of the lost work Scythica by the third-century historian Dexippus of Athens, the so-called Scythica Vindobonensia alias Dexippus Vindobonensis, which survived in a Greek palimpsest kept in the Austrian National Library in Vienna, have great impact on the study of this field. The contributions explore the Vienna fragments in their historical and historiographical contexts, from the Roman to the Byzantine Era, and the history of the invasions themselves.

Er war ein fester Bestandteil vieler Dramen, jedoch nur selten als Gerichtsverhandlung. Aischylos' Eumeniden gelten als das gattungsbegründende Stück für das moderne Rechtsdrama. Sie weichen vom klassischen tragischen Format ab, da der zentrale Konflikt durch eine Gerichtsverhandlung aufgelöst wird. Aischylos vergleicht zwei Arten von Gerechtigkeit miteinander: Die Blutrache der Erinnyen und die institutionelle Rechtsprechung des Areopags. Aristophanes' Komödie Die Wespen kritisiert die politische Einflussnahme auf die athenischen Gerichte, zeigt aber keine seriöse Verhandlung, sondern eine Parodie einer solchen. Im antiken griechischen Roman werden Gerichtsverhandlungen in einzelnen Episoden dazu verwendet, um einschneidende Veränderungen im Schicksal einer Figur auszulösen, z. Aristophanes' comedy The Wasps criticises the political influence on the Athenian courts and shows a parody of a trial, but not a serious one. In the ancient Greek novel, court hearings are used in individual episodes to trigger drastic changes in a character's fate, e.g. exile.
