    Abstract: Das ActivAge Projekt, ein von der Europäischen Kommission finanziertes internationales Forschungsprojekt, hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die Chancen und Barrieren einer Politik des aktiven Alterns in Europa zu erforschen. Der vorliegende Bericht fasst die Ergebnisse einer Expertenrunde zur Situation in Österreich zusammen, an der Teilnehmer aus einem breiten politischen Spektrum und mit Fachwissen aus verschiedenen Bereichen mitwirkten. Das Podium befasste sich mit drei Themenbereichen: (1) Bestandsaufnahme der Problematik des Alterns in Österreich; (2) kritische Diskussion über Barrieren und Chancen einer Politik des Aktiven anhand der Ergebnisse des ActivAge-Projekts; (3) Strategien und Wege der Senioren- und Alterspolitik. Das Papier stellt im Anhang das ActivAge-Projekt vor und dokumentiert das Beratungsdokument, das den Teilnehmern des Podiums vorlag.     The sustained expansion of the life span and the attendant demographic changes in the West have fuelled the production of cultural texts that explore alternative representations of aging and old age. The contributors to this volume show how artists in science-fiction, fantasy and the avant-garde develop visions of late life transformation, improvisation and adaptation to new circumstances. The studies particularly focus on perspectives on aging that challenge the predominant narratives of decline as well as fantasies of eternal youth, as defined by neoliberal notions of health, able-bodiedness, agency, self-improvement, progress, plasticity and productivity.

The contributors examine texts by William Shakespeare, Daniel Defoe, Julian Barnes, Thomas Kinsella, Seamus Heaney, J.M. Coetzee, Alice Munro, Witi Ihimaera and Patricia Grace and, together with a medical study, they suggest solutions to the challenges arising from the current demographic change brought about by ageing Western populations.

    Alte menschliche Körper werden in unserer visuellen Umwelt keineswegs tabuisiert. Vor allem in Fotografien sind sie präsent. Bekannte Bildformeln aus Porträt-, Akt- oder Lebenstreppen-Darstellungen finden sich darin wieder. Diese neue Sichtbarkeit des Alters wirkt sich auch auf die Vorstellungen von Sexualmoral, Großelternschaft, Generationenverhältnissen und Lebensläufen aus. Sabine Kampmann untersucht den Bedeutungswechsel, den die Bilder des Alterns erfahren haben, und zeigt, wie die Fotografie unsere Auffassungen vom Altern beeinflusst. Sie stellt Werke von Giorgione, Lucas Cranach und Bernardo Strozzi ebenso wie von Nicholas Nixon, Annegret Soltau, Miwa Yanagi, Andres Serrano, Erwin Olaf, Roman Opalka und Melanie Manchot vor. Old human bodies are by no means taboo in our visual environment. They are particularly present in photographs and can be found especially in well-known picture formulas from portraits, nudes or representations of stages of life. This new visibility of old age also affects ideas about sexual morality, grandparenthood, generational relationships and courses of life. Sabine Kampmann examines the change in meaning that the images of aging have experienced and shows how photography influences our conceptions of aging. She presents works by Giorgione, Lucas Cranach and Bernardo Strozzi as well as by Nicholas Nixon, Annegret Soltau, Miwa Yanagi, Andres Serrano, Erwin Olaf, Roman Opalka, and Melanie Manchot.

    Mit besonderem Bezug auf die Werke von Ulrich Oevermann und Fritz Schütze wird eine dichte Grundlegung der Logik rekonstruktiver Sozialforschung aus der Perspektive einer strukturalen Hermeneutik skizziert. Dabei werden vor allem auch die sozialontologischen Voraussetzungen dieser Methodologie dargelegt. Die erkenntnis- und wissenschaftstheoretischen Hintergründe ansprechend, werden die methodologischen Konturen und die Forschungsfragestellung dieser Richtung rekonstruktiver Sozialforschung mit Blick auf die spezifische Theorie des Subjekts und dessen Stellung in der Welt herausgearbeitet. Dabei kommen Strukturalismus und Hermeneutik zur Synthese. Soziologie kommt hierbei nicht ohne Psychoanalyse innerer Arbeitsapparate des Menschen aus. With special reference to the works of Ulrich Oevermann and Fritz Schütze, this book outlines the dense foundations of the logic of reconstructive social research from the perspective of structural hermeneutics. In this context, the author’s explanations focus on the social ontological prerequisites of the aforementioned methodology. Against the background of aspects of knowledge theory and science theory, the study emphasises the appropriate theory of the embedded subject in relation to the world around it and, in doing so, synthesises structuralism and hermeneutics. In this context, sociological theory cannot be appropriately understood without psychoanalysis of the deep mechanisms of the intra-individual work apparatus.

    The number and share of older persons in the Arab region are steadily growing and will increase substantially in the following decades. The advent of this ageing transition, which most Arab countries will start experiencing before 2030, has important economic and social implications, especially given that weak and non-inclusive social protection systems leave many older persons vulnerable to poverty, ill health and isolation. This report provides a demographic overview of Arab countries and describes the process of population ageing in the region. It further analyses the socioeconomic conditions of the current generation of older persons and assesses projected circumstances of future generations, including healthcare and pension coverage. It also highlights the two‑way intergenerational support between older persons and their families, and warns of the potential impact of changing social dynamics. To help Arab Governments start to plan now for today’s and tomorrow’s elderly population, this report also provides actionable, concrete and comprehensive recommendations. People deserve to age with dignity. As Governments engage in development planning and policymaking under the overarching 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, it is vital to ensure that current and future older persons are not left behind.

In Aging Gracefully in the Renaissance: Stories of Later Life from Petrarch to Montaigne Cynthia Skenazi explores a shift in attitudes towards aging and provides a historical perspective on a crucial problem of our time. From the late fourteenth to the end of the sixteenth centuries, the elderly subject became a point of new social, medical, political, and literary attention on both sides of the Alps. A movement of secularization tended to dissociate old age from the Christian preparation for death, re-orienting the concept of aging around pragmatic matters such as health care, intergenerational relationships, and accrued insights one might wish to pass along. Such changes were accompanied by an increasing number of personal accounts of later life. This title was made Open Access by libraries from around the world through Knowledge Unlatched.

    Main description: The binary construction of »young« and »old«, which is based on a biogerontological model of aging as decline, can be redefined as the ambiguity of aging from a cultural studies perspective.
