    We study the link between performance pay and alcohol use in Germany, a country with mandated health insurance. Previous research from the US argues that alcohol use as a form of "self-medication" may be a natural response to the stress and uncertainty of performance pay when many workers do not have access to health insurance. We find that the likelihood of consuming each of four types of alcohol (beer, wine, spirits, and mixed drinks) is higher for those receiving performance pay even controlling for a long list of economic, social and personality characteristics and in sensible IV estimates. We also show that the total number of types of alcohol consumed is larger for those receiving performance pay. We conclude that even in the face of mandated health insurance, the link found in the US persists in Germany.

    On July 13, 2020 a complete nation-wide ban was placed on the sale and transport of alcohol in South Africa. This paper evaluates the impact of this sudden and unexpected five-week alcohol prohibition on mortality due to unnatural causes. We find that the policy reduced the number of unnatural deaths by 21 per day, or approximately 740 over the five-week period. This constitutes a 14% decrease in the total number of deaths due to unnatural causes. We argue that this represents a lower bound on the impact of alcohol on short-run mortality, and underscores the severe influence that alcohol has on society - even in the short-run.

    Low minimum legal drinking ages (MLDAs), as prevalent in many European countries, are severely understudied. We use rich survey and administrative data to estimate the impact of the Austrian MLDA of 16 on teenage drinking behavior and morbidity. Regression discontinuity estimates show that legal access to alcohol increases the frequency and intensity of drinking, which results in more hospital admissions due to alcohol intoxication. The effects are stronger for boys and teenagers with low socioeconomic background. Evidence suggests that the policy's impact can hardly be fully explained by access. Data from an annual large-scale field study shows that about 25 percent of all retailers sell even hard liquor to underage customers. More generally, perceived access to alcohol is very high and hardly changes at the MLDA. However, teenagers consider binge drinking at weekends to be less harmful after gaining legal access.

    This paper evaluates the impact of a sudden and unexpected nation-wide alcohol sales ban in South Africa. We find that this policy causally reduced injury-induced mortality in the country by at least 14% during the five weeks of the ban. We argue that this estimate constitutes a lower bound on the true impact of alcohol on injury-induced mortality. We also document a sharp drop in violent crimes, indicating a tight link between alcohol and aggressive behavior in society. Our results underscore the severe harm that alcohol can cause and point towards a role for policy measures that target the heaviest drinkers in society.

    This paper evaluates the effectiveness of the German Minimum Legal Drinking Age in reducing excessive drinking and alcohol-related hospital stays. We add to previous studies by looking at a considerably earlier cutoff at age 16, when teenagers in Germany gain legal access to beer, wine, and sparkling wine. Using detailed survey data, we find considerable increases in moderate alcohol consumption and self-perceived drunkenness at age 16, but rather negligible effects for excessive drinking patterns which may lead to coma or deaths. Likewise, our analysis of daily-hospital-admission data reveals no discontinuities in hospital stays due to acute alcohol intoxication. Admissions due to physical injuries, in contrast, increase by about 11% at age 16 which coincides with teenage drinking patterns and incidents when drunken teenagers fall or get into a fight. Die vorliegende Studie analysiert die Wirksamkeit der deutschen Alterszugangsbeschränkungen zu Alkohol auf exzessives Trinkverhalten und alkoholbedingte Krankenhauseinlieferungen. Wir ergänzen bestehend Studien insofern, als wir eine besonders niedrige Altersgrenze von 16 Jahren untersuchen, ab der Jugendliche in Deutschland legal Zugang zu Bier, Wein und Sekt erhalten. Detaillierte Umfragedaten zeigen eine erhebliche Zunahme des moderaten Konsums und der selbst wahrgenommenen Trunkenheit im Alter von 16 Jahren, jedoch eher vernachlässigbare Auswirkungen auf exzessives Trinkverhalten, das zu Koma oder Todesfällen führen kann. Unsere Analyse tagesgenauer Krankenhausdaten zeigt ebenfalls keine Veränderung bei Einlieferungen aufgrund akuter Alkoholvergiftung. Krankenhauseinlieferungen aufgrund physischer Verletzungen hingegen steigen mit 16 Jahren um etwa 11% an; dies stimmt mit jugendlichen Trinkgewohnheiten überein und geht mit Vorfällen einher, bei denen betrunkene Teenager stürzen oder in eine Schlägerei geraten.

    Drinking to excess has been a striking problem for industrial and post-industrial societies - who is responsible when an individual opts for a slow suicide? The causes of such drinking have often been blamed on genes, moral weakness, 'disease' (addiction), hedonism, and Romantic illusion. Yet there is another reason: the drinker may act with sincere philosophical intent, exploring the edges of self, consciousness, will, ethics, authenticity and finitude.     Research at the intersection of strategy, organizational theory, and entrepreneurship explores what facilitates the creation of high-performing entrepreneurial ventures. While prior research has recognized that the venture creation process is often characterized by change, the relationship between various forms of change and entrepreneurial performance remains an important area for further research. This dissertation begins to address this gap, investigating how the distinct changes faced by entrepreneurs relate to venture outcomes. This dissertation answers this question over two research projects, starting with a comprehensive literature review of how venture teams manage internal and external changes. The subsequent empirical study unpacks the role of external change. The empirical analysis uses a survey dataset comprising over one thousand entrepreneurial ventures to unpack the performance implications of a changing macroeconomic environment. This dissertation provides insight into how entrepreneurs address external changes and manage internal ones to create successful ventures. Overall, this dissertation contributes to entrepreneurship, strategy, and organizations research and practice.
