    In conversation with David Adamo’s Africa in the Bible approach, which investigates the presence of Africa and Africans in Scriptures, this article conducts a synoptic search of the named and unnamed “African” women of the Torah and Nebiim with the aim of probing their socio-economic status. We ask, to what extent does a socio-economic reading of the portraits of these women - from Hagar to the Queen of Sheba - afford us a glance into the lives of women in antiquity in the geographical location called Africa today, many of whom seemed to enjoy a great degree of social and economic independence? The social identity and status of these women may help to counteract some of the modern images of African women as victims of patriarchy under male power. The implications of the findings for African biblical hermeneutics of which Adamo is one of the foremost proponents cannot be over-emphasised. doi.org/10.17159/2312-3621/2021/v34n2a17

    Angèle Etoundi Essamba was born in Cameroon, educated in France and she graduated from the Photo Academy of Amsterdam where she lives. She is today one of the most acclaimed African woman photographer of her generation. Since her first exhibition in 1985 in Amsterdam, her work has continued to be exhibited in museums, institutions, art fairs, biennials and galleries in Africa, Europe, the United States, Latin America, Arab Emirates and Asia. Essamba's work lies at the intersection of the social/gender and the artistic field. She uses her photography to bring her message across in a creative way. Her varied background and various travels and exhibitions have not only profoundly shaped her eye, but also mede her outlook to be equally aesthetic, idealistic, realistic and societal. Therefore, she joins the spirit of humanistic photography with a strong attachment to the values of communion

    "Contemporary black women writers of the African Diaspora have developed rich, nuanced, and complex literary forms through which to explore social, political, and erotic experience. Since the height of the post-civil rights and decolonialization movements of the late-twentieth century, black women writers of the diaspora have actively engaged in a politically rooted experimentalism that has reached broad audiences and produced iconic texts in both popular and academic intellectual spheres across the globe. This project explores the social and political resonances of African Diaspora women artists' experimental and formally subversive works. Mecca Jamilah Sullivan draws links between important genre-bending texts of the late-twentieth century (such as Audre Lorde's 1982 "biomythography," Zami, Ntozake Shange's 1975 "choreopoem," for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf, and Ghanaian writer Ama Ata Aidoo's 1977 prosepoem novella, Our Sister Killjoy) and more recent examples of black feminist experimentalism in the diaspora, such as those by queer Trinidadian poet and novelist Dionne Brand, South African lesbian photographer Zanele Muholi, African-American playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, and Afro-Cuban lesbian hip-hop duo Las Krudas Cubensi. Reading these artists' works through a black queer feminist frame attentive to queerness as a matter of both formal heterogeneity and identity difference shows that these artists use subversive poetics to contest dominant models of sexuality, gender, and political subjectivity in the African Diaspora"--

    Early modern central Africa comes to life in an extraordinary atlas of vivid watercolors and drawings that Italian Capuchin Franciscans, veterans of Kongo and Angola missions, composed between 1650 and 1750 for the training of future missionaries. These "practical guides" present the intricacies of the natural, social, and religious environment of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century west-central Africa and outline the primarily visual catechization methods the friars devised for the region. Images on a Mission in Early Modern Kongo and Angola brings this overlooked visual corpus to public and scholarly attention.This beautifully illustrated book includes full-color reproductions of all the images in the atlas, in conjunction with rarely seen related material gathered from collections and archives around the world. Taking a bold new approach to the study of early modern global interactions, art historian Cécile Fromont demonstrates how visual creations such as the Capuchin vignettes, though European in form and crafstmanship, emerged not from a single perspective but rather from cross-cultural interaction. Fromont models a fresh way to think about images created across cultures, highlighting the formative role that cultural encounter itself played in their conception, execution, and modes of operation.Centering Africa and Africans, and with ramifications on four continents, Fromont's decolonial history profoundly transforms our understanding of the early modern world.
