These elements are commonly framed as distractions in an economy of attention and this book approaches them with the prospect of understanding their attraction, from the starting point of diversions. Diversions designate not simply shifting states of attention but characterize the direction of any system on a different course, a theoretical perspective which makes it possible to investigate distractions as not only by-products of contemporary media and human attention. The perspective shifts from distractions as the unwanted and inconsequential to considering instead the function of diversions in the process of evolutionary development. Grounded in media theory but drawing from diverse interdisciplinary perspectives in biology, philosophy, and systems theory, this book provocatively theorizes the process of diversions – of the playful, stupid, cute, and funny – as significant for the evolution of a range of organisms. Andreas Ervik holds a PhD in Media studies from the University of Oslo, Norway. He is an independent researcher and artist.

Schouten de Jel argues that a number of interconnected patterns of imagery by which the poet delineates the fallen world and its deficits, are drawn from Epicurean and Lucretian tradition, much of it as adopted or reshaped in European intellectual history of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. The book is a treasure-trove of scholarship. It both demonstrates the systematicity and consistency of Blake’s imagery and illuminates it, making us see familiar language in a novel and enriching context. Blake’s rocks, watches, revolutions and sunflowers take on a new saliency and a new halo of associations.” —Laura Quinney, Professor of English, Brandeis University, USA This book demonstrates the way in which William Blake aligned his idiosyncratic concept of the Selfhood – the lens through which the despiritualised subject beholds the material world – with the atomistic materialism of the Epicurean school as it was transmitted through the first-century BC Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura. By addressing this philosophical debt, this study sets out a threefold re-evaluation of Blake’s work: to clarify the classical stream of Blake’s philosophical heritage through Lucretius; to return Blake to his historical moment, a thirty-year period from 1790 to 1820 which has been described as the second Lucretian moment in England; and to employ a new exegetical model for understanding the phenomenological parameters and epistemological frameworks of Blake’s mythopoeia. Accordingly, it is revealed that Blake was not only aware of classical atomistic cosmogony and sense-based epistemology but that he systematically mapped postlapsarian existence onto an Epicurean framework. Joshua Schouten de Jel is a recent doctoral graduate from the University of Plymouth, UK. He is the author of articles on William Blake, Mary Shelley, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

Zugleich werden diese Orte jedoch aufgelöst. Stimmen lassen uns dabei ihre eigene Ortlosigkeit vernehmen. Anhand von Analysen von Theaterinszenierungen von Masataka Matsuda, Jossi Wieler, Robert Wilson und Jan Lauwers zeigt Mariko Harigai: Das Theater macht die Entstehungs- und Auflösungsprozesse solcher Orte durch Stimmen spürbar.

    The Dissertation of 1792 on the Origin of Evil -- Schelling’s Timæus -- The Essay on the Possibility of a Form of All Philosophy (1794) -- The Opposition Between the Unconditional -- The Dramatization of Contrast -- The Paradox of Opposition -- Philosophy of Nature -- The System of Transcendental Idealism (1800) -- Epilogue on Earth. This book is not a merely historical reconstruction of Schelling’s thought; its main goal is to provide a contribution for a better comprehension of the importance of the philosophical quest of the young German philosopher from within, which represents a turning point for the whole thought of modernity. I did not describe the various fields of Schelling’s work, but I pointed out the central position of his Aesthetics, through the analysis of the inner mechanisms of his concepts. This mechanism, in my opinion, shows the reason why an Aesthetic philosophy is possible, and why its origin can be traced to Kant’s Aesthetics (particularly in Kant’s Critique of Judgement) and in the speculations of the early post-Kantian philosophy. The young Schelling’s philosophical problems precede his encounter with Fichte’s philosophy. Schelling discovers these problems, related to Plato, Aristotle, Spinoza, Wolff, Leibniz and Kant, in the protestant college of the Stift in Tübingen. Fichte confirmed the necessity of an urgent reform of transcendental philosophy, and offered to the young philosopher a philosophical dictionary and an orientation. Schelling exploited these resources with a great degree of autonomy, independence and originality. In these years Hölderlin’s influence on Schelling was much greater. Schelling’s and Hölderlin’s speculations, in these crucial years, were tightly connected.

    Einleitend zur Literatur der Romantik: Anforderungen an die Narratologie und Didaktik -- Schlegels Roman „Lucinde“: ästhetisches Angebot einer ethischen Lebensweise -- Eichendorffs „Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts“: ästhetische Subversion der Moral -- Hoffmanns „Der Sandmann“: Spur einer konstitutiven Kraft der Narration -- Philosophische Textdidaktik am Beispiel der Romantik: eine Frage der Verantwortung?. An der Schnittstelle zwischen Philosophie, Literatur, Ethik und Ästhetik liegt in der philosophischen Fach- und Literaturdidaktik ein nicht ausgeschöpftes Potential begraben – insbesondere im Umgang mit der literarischen Romantik. Diesem Potential spürt die vorliegende Arbeit nach, indem sie Schlegels „Lucinde“, Eichendorffs „Taugenichts“ und Hoffmanns „Sandmann“ einer kritischen Relektüre unterzieht, um die in der philosophischen Postmoderne viel diskutierten Übergänge zwischen Ethik und Ästhetik sichtbar zu machen und ihre Bedeutung für die Fachdidaktik zu diskutieren. Der Autor Max Brinnich hat in Philosophie promoviert und ein Lehramtsstudium für die Fächer Deutsch, Philosophie und Psychologie absolviert. Nach einer langjährigen universitären Beschäftigung unterrichtet er nun an einem Gymnasium in Wien und forscht in den Bereichen der philosophischen Ästhetik, Ethik und Fachdidaktik an der Schnittstelle zur Literaturwissenschaft und Deutschdidaktik.

Becoming Humidity. “Stupid but cute, distracted and fungal, burned out and playful: this is an inventive and sometimes mischevious media theory that embraces ecology, artifice and delight to propose an art of living with the internet we know today.” –Matthew Fuller, Professor of Cultural Studies, Goldsmiths, University of London This book develops a philosophy of the predominant yet obtrusive aspects of digital culture, arguing that what seems like insignificant distractions of digital technology - such as video games, mindless browsing, cute animal imagery, political memes, and trolling - are actually keyed into fundamental aspects of evolution. These elements are commonly framed as distractions in an economy of attention and this book approaches them with the prospect of understanding their attraction, from the starting point of diversions. Diversions designate not simply shifting states of attention but characterize the direction of any system on a different course, a theoretical perspective which makes it possible to investigate distractions as not only by-products of contemporary media and human attention. The perspective shifts from distractions as the unwanted and inconsequential to considering instead the function of diversions in the process of evolutionary development. Grounded in media theory but drawing from diverse interdisciplinary perspectives in biology, philosophy, and systems theory, this book provocatively theorizes the process of diversions – of the playful, stupid, cute, and funny – as significant for the evolution of a range of organisms. Andreas Ervik holds a PhD in Media studies from the University of Oslo, Norway. He is an independent researcher and artist.

Im Zentrum des Buches steht die Betrachtung der Wiederholung in ihren vielfältigen, kulturübergreifenden Erscheinungsformen. Zahlreiche Analysen aus den Bereichen der abendländischen Kunstmusik, der europäischen Volksmusik, der afrikanischen, indonesischen und indischen Musik sowie der populären Musik untermauern die einzigartige Bedeutung der Wiederholung als musikalisches Gestaltungsmittel. Die europäische Theorie der musikalischen Form, mathematische Betrachtungen, Minimal Music (als Inbegriff repetitiver Musik) sowie ästhetische Überlegungen werden in einzelnen Kapiteln behandelt. Eine Systematisierung der Wiederholungsstrukturen steht am Ende des Buches. Entsprechend dieser Bedeutung wird die Schrift eingeleitet mit einer streifzugartigen Darstellung der Wiederholung als einer universellen, kunstspartenübergreifenden Strategie.     The Dissertation of 1792 on the Origin of Evil -- Schelling’s Timæus -- The Essay on the Possibility of a Form of All Philosophy (1794) -- The Opposition Between the Unconditional -- The Dramatization of Contrast -- The Paradox of Opposition -- Philosophy of Nature -- The System of Transcendental Idealism (1800) -- Epilogue on Earth. This book is not a merely historical reconstruction of Schelling’s thought; its main goal is to provide a contribution for a better comprehension of the importance of the philosophical quest of the young German philosopher from within, which represents a turning point for the whole thought of modernity. I did not describe the various fields of Schelling’s work, but I pointed out the central position of his Aesthetics, through the analysis of the inner mechanisms of his concepts. This mechanism, in my opinion, shows the reason why an Aesthetic philosophy is possible, and why its origin can be traced to Kant’s Aesthetics (particularly in Kant’s Critique of Judgement) and in the speculations of the early post-Kantian philosophy. The young Schelling’s philosophical problems precede his encounter with Fichte’s philosophy. Schelling discovers these problems, related to Plato, Aristotle, Spinoza, Wolff, Leibniz and Kant, in the protestant college of the Stift in Tübingen. Fichte confirmed the necessity of an urgent reform of transcendental philosophy, and offered to the young philosopher a philosophical dictionary and an orientation. Schelling exploited these resources with a great degree of autonomy, independence and originality. In these years Hölderlin’s influence on Schelling was much greater. Schelling’s and Hölderlin’s speculations, in these crucial years, were tightly connected.
