    At the center of this interdisciplinary study are court monsters - dwarves, hirsutes, and misshapen individuals - who, by their very presence, altered Renaissance ethics vis-à-vis anatomical difference, social virtues, and scientific knowledge. These monsters evolved from objects of curiosity, to scientific cases, to legally independent beings. Although many images of and writings about these individuals depict them as jokes of nature or indices of courtly wit, others transcend these categories, combining a vocabulary of courtly self-fashioning with close observations akin to dissections that humanize monsters, while simultaneously stressing their anatomical difference. More importantly, the works examined in this book point to the intricate cultural, religious, ethical, and scientific perceptions of monstrous individuals who were fixtures in contemporary courts. From entertainers to advisors, and from faithful companions to collectible objects, monsters at court held liminal positions used by rulers to create and shape their own personae.

    "The subject of deformity and disability in the ancient Greco-Roman world has experienced a surge in scholarship over the past two decades. Recognizing a vast, but relatively un(der)explored, corpus of evidence, scholars have sought to integrate the deformed and disabled body back into our understanding of ancient society and culture, art and representation. The Hunchback in Hellenistic and Roman Art works towards this end, using the figure of the hunchback to re-think and re-read images of the 'Other' as well as key issues that lie at the very heart of ancient representation. The author takes an art-historical approach, examining key features of the corpus of hunchbacks, as well as representations of the deformed and disabled more generally. This provides fertile ground for a re-assessment of current, and likewise marginalized, scholarship on the miniature in ancient art, hyperphallicism in ancient art, and the emphasis on the male body in ancient art"--

The book focuses closely on English literary culture but also engages with wider European perspectives, drawing on a wide array of primary sources including Italian and other European visual art. Offering illuminating close readings of texts from both high and low culture, it will interest scholars in English literature, cultural studies, women's studies, history and art history, as well as postgraduate and undergraduate students in these disciplines. As an accessible and absorbing account of the power dynamics informing depictions of ugliness (and beauty) in relation to some of the quirkiest literary and visual material to be found in early modern culture, it will also appeal to a wider audience.
