With the rise of industrialization, they were largely considered peripheral to the course of urban affairs. Now they have become central to new ways of thinking about the challenges of economic and social change, as well as repositioning cities within competitive global networks. In this timely and thought-provoking book, John and Margaret Gold provide a reflective and evidence-based historical survey of the processes and actors involved, charting the ways that regular festivals have now become embedded in urban life and city planning. Beginning with David Garrick's rain-drenched Shakespearean Jubilee and ending with Sydney's flamboyant Mardi Gras celebrations, it encompasses the emergence and consolidation of city festivals. After a contextual historical survey that stretches from Antiquity to the late nineteenth century, there are detailed case studies of pioneering European arts festivals in their urban context: Venice's Biennale, the Salzburg Festival, the Cannes Film Festival and Edinburgh's International Festival. Ensuing chapters deal with the worldwide proliferation of arts festivals after 1950 and with the ever-increasing diversifycation of carnival celebrations, particularly through the actions of groups seeking to assert their identity. The conclusion draws together the book's key themes and sketches the future prospects for festival cities.     The difficulty of reconciling our basic needs with the long history of cultural landscapes, in all their inherent beauty and sufficiency, has become clear. With our deep trust in modern technology, in progress and in a demanding global lifestyle we have become a real threat to our world. Yet, today the existential and elementary nature of landscapes remains the bearer of a successful metaphor for “balance”. Why not draw—amidst a truly global crisis—conclusions out of our long history of designed nature, of places shaped by skilled labor and a quest for pleasure? Landscape Analogue seeks to stimulate the “Analogue” dimension as a substantial concept for everyday landscape thinking. In an anthology of interdisciplinary essays, Landscript 6 stresses the necessity for a fundamental shift, within the likely framework of a future of restricted resources, a radically different mobility or “hot” cities Zweifellos war es nie einfach, unsere steigenden Bedürfnisse mit der uralten Geschichte der Kulturlandschaften, ihrer Schönheit und Fülle in Einklang zu bringen. Mit unserem Vertrauen in die moderne Technik, in Fortschritt und einen anspruchsvollen globalen Lebensstil sind wir jedoch zu einer Bedrohung für die Welt geworden. Und doch ist die existenzielle und elementare Natur der „Landschaft“ nach wie vor eine wertvolle Metapher für „Gleichgewicht“.     Never before had the garden to fulfil so many demands as it does today. It is a refuge from digitalised life and acts as a bridge to nature. As a man-made place where plants grow, it is cultivated and untamable at the same time. While for centuries the gardener's ambition was to control and subjugate nature, today it serves more as a place for retreat, a possible surrogate for wilderness, a habitat for animals or it fulfils the dream of self-sufficiency. In this book, landscape architects, sociologists, architects, artists, philosophers and historians illuminate different aspects of the garden in the Anthropocene in six chapters: the garden as a place of community, garden as art, garden as a place of enchantment and rapture, opening up questions of what garden as a model could stand for Selten hatte der Garten so viele Ansprüche zu erfüllen wie heute. Er ist Zufluchtsort vor dem digitalisierten Leben und agiert als Mittler zur Natur. Als vom Menschen angelegter Ort, in dem Pflanzen wachsen, ist er gleichzeitig kultiviert und unzähmbar. Während über Jahrhunderte hinweg der Ehrgeiz des Gärtners darin bestand, die Natur zu kontrollieren und zu unterwerfen, dient er heute eher als Surrogat für Wildnis, als Habitat für Tiere oder erfüllt den Traum vom Selbstversorgertum. In diesem Buch beleuchten Landschaftsarchitekt:innen, Architekt:innen, Künstler:innen und Philosoph:innen in sechs Kapiteln verschiedene Aspekte des Gartens im Anthropozän: der Garten als Ort der Nachbarschaft, Garten als Kunst, Garten als Ort des Bezauberns und der Entrücktheit.     The difficulty of reconciling our basic needs with the long history of cultural landscapes, in all their inherent beauty and sufficiency, has become clear. With our deep trust in modern technology, in progress and in a demanding global lifestyle we have become a real threat to our world. Yet, today the existential and elementary nature of landscapes remains the bearer of a successful metaphor for "balance". Why not draw-amidst a truly global crisis-conclusions out of our long history of designed nature, of places shaped by skilled labor and a quest for pleasure? Landscape Analogue seeks to stimulate the "Analogue" dimension as a substantial concept for everyday landscape thinking. In an anthology of interdisciplinary essays, Landscript 6 stresses the necessity for a fundamental shift, within the likely framework of a future of restricted resources, a radically different mobility or "hot" cities Zweifellos war es nie einfach, unsere steigenden Bedürfnisse mit der uralten Geschichte der Kulturlandschaften, ihrer Schönheit und Fülle in Einklang zu bringen. Mit unserem Vertrauen in die moderne Technik, in Fortschritt und einen anspruchsvollen globalen Lebensstil sind wir jedoch zu einer Bedrohung für die Welt geworden. Of equal interest to contemporary architectural practice as it is to architectural theory and aesthetics, this 'atmospheric turn' owes much to the work of the German philosopher Gernot Böhme. Atmospheric Architectures: The Aesthetics of Felt Spaces brings together Böhme's most seminal writings on the subject, through chapters selected from his classic books and influential articles, many of which have hitherto only been available in German. This is the only translated version authorised by Böhme himself, and is the first coherent collection deploying a consistent terminology. It is a work which will provide rich references and a theoretical framework for ongoing discussions about atmospheres and their relations to architectural and urban spaces. Their ubiquity indicates that gardens of the period conveyed darker, more disturbing themes than has been acknowledged.In The Monster in the Garden, Luke Morgan argues that the monster is a key figure in Renaissance culture. Monsters were ciphers for contemporary anxieties about normative social life and identity. Drawing on sixteenth-century medical, legal, and scientific texts, as well as recent scholarship on monstrosity, abnormality, and difference in early modern Europe, he considers the garden within a broader framework of inquiry. Developing a new conceptual model of Renaissance landscape design, Morgan argues that the presence of monsters was not incidental but an essential feature of the experience of gardens

    "Engendering Cities examines the contemporary research, policy and practice of designing for gender in urban spaces. Gender matters in city design, yet despite legislative mandates across the globe to provide equal access to services for men and women alike, these issues are still often overlooked or inadequately addressed. This book looks at critical aspects of contemporary cities regarding gender, including topics such as transport, housing, public health, education, caring, infrastructure, as well as issues which are rarely addressed in planning, design and policy such as the importance of toilets for education and clothes washers for freeing time. In the first section, a number of chapters in the book assess past, current and projected conditions in cities vis-a-vis gender issues and needs. In the second section, the book assesses existing policy, planning and design efforts to improve women's and men's concerns in urban living. Finally, it proposes changes to existing policies and practices in urban planning and design, including its thinking (theory) and norms (ethics). The book applies the current scholarship on theory and practice related to gender in a planning context, elaborating on some critical community-focused reflections on gender and design. It will be key reading for scholars and students of planning, architecture, design, gender studies, sociology, anthropology, geography, and political science.     Europeans may be said to have first encountered the Chinese garden in Marco Polo's narrative of his travels through the Mongol Empire and his years at the court of Kublai Khan. His account of a man-made lake abundant with fish, a verdant green hill lush with trees, raised walkways, and a plethora of beasts and birds took root in the European imagination as the description of a kind of Eden. Beginning in the sixteenth century, permanent interaction between Europe and China took form, and Jesuit missionaries and travelers recorded in letters and memoirs their admiration of Chinese gardens for their seeming naturalness. In the eighteenth century, European taste for chinoiserie reached its height, and informed observers of the Far East discovered that sophisticated and codified design principles lay behind the apparent simplicity of the Chinese garden. The widespread appreciation of the eighteenth century gave way to rejection in the nineteenth, a result of tensions over practical concerns such as trade imbalances and symbolized by the destruction of the imperial park of Yuanming yuan by a joint Anglo-French military expedition.In Ideas of Chinese Gardens, Bianca Maria Rinaldi has gathered an unparalleled collection of westerners' accounts, many freshly translated and all expertly annotated, as well as images that would have accompanied the texts as they circulated in Europe. Representing a great diversity of materials and literary genres, Rinaldi's book includes more than thirty-five sources that span centuries, countries, languages, occupational biases, and political aims. By providing unmediated firsthand accounts of the testimony of these travelers and expatriates, Rinaldi illustrates how the Chinese garden was progressively lifted out of the realm of fantasy into something that could be compared with, and have an impact on, European traditions.
