    Anhand der Biografie der Beiruter Zeitschrift Mawaqif (1968-1994) erzählt das Buch die bewegte Geschichte einer arabischen Intellektuellengeneration im späten 20. Jahrhundert. Hauptschauplatz ist die Stadt Beirut, der damalige Hotspot einer transarabischen Intelligenzija und ihrer Zeitschriftenpublizistik. In der postkolonialen arabischen Welt galt die politisch-literarische Zeitschrift, genau wie in Europa, als das Leitmedium des sogenannten Intellektuellen. In der vorgelegten Studie wird erstmals die historische Verflechtung dieser Sozialfigur mit der modernen arabischen Zeitschrift als einer 'Krisenmedium' und als konstitutiver Praxis dieses Intellektuellen diskutiert. Vor dem Hintergrund des Sechs-Tage-Kriegs, der palästinensischen Widerstandsbewegung, der iranischen Revolution, des Bürgerkriegs im Libanon und der Exilbewegungen der 1980er Jahre spiegelt Mawaqifs Lebenslauf den einer arabischen kulturellen Linken nach 1967 und das Scheitern ihres einst revolutionären Projekts

    Die Lektüre des mittelalterlichen 'Nibelungenlieds' wurde seit seiner Wiederentdeckung im 18. Jahrhundert mit Vorstellungen von 'deutscher Kultur' und vom 'deutschen Volk' überblendet. Einen Höhepunkt dieser nationalistisch ausgerichteten Lektüre bildet die Zeit des Nationalsozialismus, in der Rückgriffe auf die Nibelungen als Identifikationsmuster Hochkonjunktur hatten. Im Anschluss an Jacob Grimms Begriffsprägung des 'Nibelungischen' gehen die Beiträge des Bandes der umfassenden 'Nibelungisierung' der Gesellschaft in populären und wissenschaftlichen Diskursen zur Zeit des Nationalsozialismus nach. Dabei wird das 'Nibelungische' als Zeichenvorrat begriffen, der in politisch instabilen Zeiten zur Aktivierung bereitsteht. Neuere Wiedererzählungen zeigen, wie mit dem Nibelungenstoff bis heute umgegangen wird und in welcher Weise 'Nibelungisches' nach wie vor wirksam ist

    "Placed in the wider scope of post-war European decolonisation migrations, The Retornados from the Portuguese Colonies in Africa looks at the "Return" of the Portuguese nationals living in the African colonies when they became independent. Using an interdisciplinary research agenda, the book presents a collection of research essays written by experts in the fields of anthropology, history, literature and the arts, that look at a wide range of memory narratives through which the Return-as well as the experiences of war, violence, loss and trauma-have been expressed, contested and internalised in the social realm. These narratives include testimonial accounts from the so-called retornados from Africa and their descendants, as well as works of fiction and public memory-novels, television series, artworks, films or social media-that have come to mediate the public understanding of this past. Through the dialogue between these different narrative modes, this book intends to explore the interplay between official memory, the lived experience and fiction, thus contributing to build an empirical basis to critically discuss the memory of the end of the Portuguese empire within postcolonial Europe.     Anhand der Biografie der Beiruter Zeitschrift Mawaqif (1968-1994) erzählt das Buch die bewegte Geschichte einer arabischen Intellektuellengeneration im späten 20. Jahrhundert. Hauptschauplatz ist die Stadt Beirut, der damalige Hotspot einer transarabischen Intelligenzija und ihrer Zeitschriftenpublizistik. In der postkolonialen arabischen Welt galt die politisch-literarische Zeitschrift, genau wie in Europa, als das Leitmedium des sogenannten Intellektuellen. In der vorgelegten Studie wird erstmals die historische Verflechtung dieser Sozialfigur mit der modernen arabischen Zeitschrift als einer 'Krisenmedium' und als konstitutiver Praxis dieses Intellektuellen diskutiert. Vor dem Hintergrund des Sechs-Tage-Kriegs, der palästinensischen Widerstandsbewegung, der iranischen Revolution, des Bürgerkriegs im Libanon und der Exilbewegungen der 1980er Jahre spiegelt Mawaqifs Lebenslauf den einer arabischen kulturellen Linken nach 1967 und das Scheitern ihres einst revolutionären Projekts

    "Placed in the wider scope of post-war European decolonisation migrations, The Retornados from the Portuguese Colonies in Africa looks at the "Return" of the Portuguese nationals living in the African colonies when they became independent. Using an interdisciplinary research agenda, the book presents a collection of research essays written by experts in the fields of anthropology, history, literature and the arts, that look at a wide range of memory narratives through which the Return-as well as the experiences of war, violence, loss and trauma-have been expressed, contested and internalised in the social realm. These narratives include testimonial accounts from the so-called retornados from Africa and their descendants, as well as works of fiction and public memory-novels, television series, artworks, films or social media-that have come to mediate the public understanding of this past. Through the dialogue between these different narrative modes, this book intends to explore the interplay between official memory, the lived experience and fiction, thus contributing to build an empirical basis to critically discuss the memory of the end of the Portuguese empire within postcolonial Europe.     Wie kam es dazu, dass das als Technikmuseum gegründete Deutsche Bergbau-Museum Bochum (DBM) heute neben weiteren Sammlungsbereichen auch über eine Sammlung von Gemälden, Grafiken und Plastiken verfügt? Der Frage nach der Genese und der historischen Funktion dieser Kunstsammlung spürt das Buch anhand der Institutions- und Sammlungsgeschichte des Hauses nach. Dabei liegt der Fokus auf den Motiven und Handlungen der Akteur:innen des Museums in der Amtszeit des Gründungsdirektors, Dr.-Ing. Dr. h. c. Heinrich Winkelmann (1928-1966). Schriftliche Überlieferungen zeigen, dass Winkelmann sich berufen fühlte, regulierend in die Kunstszene einzugreifen. Anhand von Sammlungs- und Archivforschung wird deshalb außerdem untersucht, welche Positionen der Gründungsdirektor in Hinblick auf die Ikonografie von Bergleuten in der bildenden Kunst vertrat und inwiefern sich seine kulturpolitischen Bemühungen in der heutigen Kunst-Sammlung des DBM materialisiert haben

    "For more than a century before World War II, traders, merchants, financiers, and laborers steadily moved between places on the Indian Ocean, trading goods, supplying credit, and seeking work. This all changed with the war and as India, Burma, Ceylon, and Malaya wrested independence from the British empire. Set against the tumult of the postwar period, Boats in a Storm centers on the legal struggles of migrants to retain their traditional rhythms and patterns of life, illustrating how they experienced citizenship and decolonization. Even as nascent citizenship regimes and divergent political trajectories of decolonization papered over migrations between South and Southeast Asia, migrants continued to recount cross-border histories in encounters with the law. These accounts, often obscured by national and international political developments, unsettle the notion that static national identities and loyalties had emerged, fully formed and unblemished by migrant pasts, in the aftermath of empires. Drawing on archival research conducted in India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, London, and Singapore, Kalyani Ramnath narrates how former migrants battled legal requirements to revive prewar circulations of credit, capital, and labor, in a postwar context of rising ethno-nationalisms that accused migrants of stealing jobs and hoarding land. Ultimately, Ramnath shows how decolonization was marked not only by shipwrecked empires and nation-states assembled and ordered from the debris of imperial collapse, but also by these forgotten stories of wartime displacements, their unintended consequences, and long afterlives."

    Vorliegender Sammelband widmet sich den politisch sehr heterogenen Europa-Ideen und Liberalismuskonzepten, die von 1900 bis 1950 in Wissenschaft, Literatur und Kulturkritik intensiv diskutiert werden. Die germanistischen, politologischen, ideen- und wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Beiträge entstanden im Zusammenhang eines Forschungsprojekts der Universitäten Heidelberg, Paris-Sorbonne und Venedig, das vom Centre interdisciplinaire d'études et de recherches sur l'Allemagne gefördert wurde. Das Buch befasst sich mit den philosophischen Ursprüngen, intellektuellen Konstellationen und literarischen Artikulationen dieser Europa-Ideen, die den Liberalismus und die Demokratie in einem größeren Zusammenhang mit Kulturdiagnosen der Moderne reflektieren. Gerade in der Zwischenkriegszeit zirkulieren nicht nur pazifistische und demokratische, sondern auch antiliberale und autoritäre Europa-Ideen, die auf den Untergang der Großreiche 1918 mit kontinentalen Größenphantasien reagieren und kaum als demokratische Vorläufer der EU gelten können.     This book explores Wordsworth's extraordinary influence on the tourist landscapes of the Lake District throughout the age of railways, motorcars and the First World War. It reveals how Wordsworth's response to railways was not a straightforward matter of opposition and protest; his ideas were taken up by both advocates and opponents of railways, and through their controversies had a surprising impact on the earliest motorists as they sought a language to describe the liberty and independence of their new mode of transport. Once the age of motoring was underway, the outbreak of the First World War encouraged British people to connect Wordsworth's patriotic passion with his wish to protect the Lake District as a national heritage - a transition that would have momentous effects in the interwar period, when popular motoring paradoxically brought a vogue for open-air activities and a renewal of romantic pedestrianism. With the arrival of global tourism, preservation of the cultural landscape of the Lake District became an urgent national and international concern.     "Ono examines cross-cultural artistic exchange between the West and Japan from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. Studies of Japonisme have been dominated by searching out relationships of influence between artworks - trying to identify which specific works influenced a particular artist. Ono argues that a more holistic understanding of "spillover effects" is necessary in fully comprehending the nuances of these relationships. She bases this argument on documents and works of art in the context of globalization, looking at the relationships between James McNeill Whistler and others with their contemporaries in the Japanese artistic and literary worlds. This was a more complex two-way exchange than is often appreciated, with Western artists taking inspiration from (to them) new Japanese styles, while Japanese artists and writers were trying to craft a "modern", more western-influences style to reflect the modern nation of Japan emerging onto the world stage after centuries of relative isolation. A fascinating analysis of the role of globalisation and cultural exchange in the development of new and hybrid artforms, that will be essential reading for scholars of this fascinating period in international art history"--

    Genres of Emergency offers literary genre as a way to understand and negotiate the varied states of emergency and crisis that have become a fixture of our contemporary world. Building on a critical study of the literature written during and about the State of Emergency declared by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in India (1975 - 1977), the study establishes emergency and its genres as an important interpretative site: an exceptionally violent episode marked asa one-off crisis, which also functions as a locus for an ongoing renegotiation of a modern polity and culture. Reading a wide-ranging archive of English-language texts - from prison memoir to popular magazine, from high-brow literary fiction to boilerplate thriller, from the unrelentingly realistic to themythically allegorical - Genres of Emergency traces the tension between crisis and continuity that these genres mediate. In addressing this tension, the authors of Emergency fiction take seriously the genres in which they write and use them to mobilize literary conventions as political interventions. More specifically, these novels use the conventions of realism, epic, allegory, and the thriller to reach back in time and across cultures and languages, invoking past iterations of thesegenres and histories and anticipating those to come. Combining literary criticism with cultural history, Genres of Emergency thus has implications for the study of literary genre, for the historical events that these genres recount, and for understanding the politics of literary form

    Challenges the myth of the United States as a nation of immigrants by bringing together two groups rarely read together: Native Americans and Eastern European immigrants In this cultural history of Americanization during the Progressive Era, Cristina Stanciu argues that new immigrants and Native Americans shaped the intellectual and cultural debates over inclusion and exclusion, challenging ideas of national belonging, citizenship, and literary and cultural production. Deeply grounded in a wide-ranging archive of Indigenous and new immigrant writing and visual culture-including congressional acts, testimonies, news reports, cartoons, poetry, fiction, and silent film-this book brings together voices of Native and immigrant America. Stanciu shows that, although Native Americans and new immigrants faced different legal and cultural obstacles to citizenship, the challenges they faced and their resistance to assimilation and Americanization often ran along parallel paths. Both struggled against idealized models of American citizenship that dominated public spaces. Both participated in government-sponsored Americanization efforts and worked to gain agency and sovereignty while negotiating naturalization. Rethinking popular understandings of Americanization, Stanciu argues that the new immigrants and Native Americans at the heart of this book expanded the narrow definitions of American identity

    Transpacific Cartographies examines how contemporary Chinese diasporic narratives address the existential loss of home for immigrant communities at a time of global precarity and amid rising Sino-US tensions. Focusingon cultural productions of the Chinese diaspora from the 1990s to the present -- including novels by the Sinophone writers Yan Geling (The Criminal Lu Yanshi), Shi Yu (New York Lover), Chen Qian (Listen to the Caged Bird Sing), and Rong Rong (Notes of a Couple), as well as by the Anglophone writer Ha Jin (A Free Life;A Map of Betrayal),selected TV shows (Beijinger in New York; The Way We Were), and online literature -- Melody Yunzi Li argues that the characters in these stories create multilayered maps that transcend the territorial boundaries that make finding a home in a foreign land a seemingly impossible task. In doing so, these maps outline a transpacific landscape that reflects the psycho-geography of homemaking for diasporic communities. Intersecting with and bridging Sinophone studies, Chinese American studies, and diaspora studies and drawing on theories of literary cartography, Transpacific Cartographiesdemonstrates how these maps offer their readers different paths for finding a sense of home no matter where they are
