"Art and Aesthetics in a Globalizing World investigates art and aesthetics in their widest senses and experiences, from a variety of perspectives branching from the metaphysical to the political. Moving beyond art as an expression of the inner mind and invention of the individual self, the volume bridges the gap between changing perceptions of contemporary art and aesthetics, and maps globalising currents in a number of contexts and regions. The volume includes an impressive variety of case studies offered by established leaders in the field and original and emergent scholarly talent covering areas in India, Nepal, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Rwanda and Germany as well as providing transnational or diasporic perspectives. From the contradictory demands made on successful artists from the south in the global art world such as Anish Kapoor, to images of war and puppetry created by female political prisoners, the volume compels creative and political interpretations of the ever-changing and globalizing terrain of arts and aesthetics. Art and Aesthetics in a Globalizing World will be important reading for students and scholars of the anthropology of art, art, and art history, and media, film and cultural studies"--

"With the supposed shortening of our attention spans, what future is there for fiction in the age of the internet? Contemporary Fictions of Attention rejects this discourse of distraction-crisis which suggests that the future of reading is in peril, and instead finds that contemporary writers construct 'fictions of attention' that find some value in states or moments of inattention. Through discussion of work by a diverse selection of writers, including Joshua Cohen, Ben Lerner, Tom McCarthy, Ali Smith, Zadie Smith, and David Foster Wallace, this book identifies how fiction prompts readers to become peripherally aware of their own attention. Contemporary Fictions of Attention locates a common interest in attention within 21st-century fiction and connects this interest to a series of debates surrounding ethics, temporality, the everyday, boredom, work, and self-discipline in contemporary culture."--Bloomsbury Publishing Fictions of attention -- 'Focus, people!' (David Foster Wallace) -- Present-mindedness (Joshua Cohen) -- The distraction of both (Ali Smith) -- Amputated attention (Tom McCarthy) -- Beginning to mind (Zadie Smith) -- Reading absorption (Ben Lerner).

A Rhetoric of Divisive Partisanship: The 2016 American Presidential Campaign Disourse of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump examines the campaign speeches of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump as they targeted members of the American public that were ideologically different but equally emotionally vulnerable. Each appealed to marginalized segments of the electorate, groups at opposite ends of the political spectrum, joined through a shared distrust and fear of politics instead of political or even party affiliation. This book addresses how Sanders and Trump polarized and reinforced their respective bases as "outsiders" and relied on anti-establishment arguments and discussions grounded in personal attacks against "enemies." Colleen Elizabeth Kelley expands on previous ideas about dialogue and political talk and asserts that, rather than serving as a model of civic and civil discourse, the rhetoric of Sanders and Trump was reactionary and divisive, beginning with different intentions and producing different results--back cover

Editors Jean-Michel Ganteau and Susana Onega) have assembled a volume which addresses the relationship between trauma and ethics, and moves one step further to engage with vulnerability studies in their relation to literature and literary form. It consists of an introduction and of twelve articles written by specialists from various European countries and includes an interview with US novelist Jayne Anne Philips, conducted by her translator into French, Marc Amfreville, addressing her latest novel, Quiet Dell, through the victimhood-vulnerability prism. The corpus of primary sources on which the volume is based draws on various literary backgrounds in English, from Britain to India, through the USA. The editors draw on material from the ethics of alterity, trauma studies and the ethics of vulnerability in line with the work of moral philosophers like Emmanuel Levinas, as well as with a more recent and challenging tradition of continental thinkers, virtually unknown so far in the English-speaking world, represented by Guillaume Le Blanc, Nathalie Maillard, and Corinne Pelluchon, among others. Yet another related line of thought followed in the volume is that represented by feminist critics like Catriona McKenzie, Wendy Rogers and Susan Dodds

Cristina de Middel examines the peculiar understanding of masculinity in India. The award-winning Spanish photographer Cristina de Middel presents her striking latest project, 'The Perfect Man'. With Chaplin's film 'Modern Times' as a starting point for the book's narrative structure, De Middel reflects on the peculiar understanding of masculinity in India, through the relationships between man, machine and work. In India, industrial revolution never really started and never really ended, but western standards, which defined this new perfect working man, were imposed and accepted in a society that already had a very elitist cultural structure. The results were confusing. De Middel tells the story of Doctor Ashok Aswani, who decided one day to go to the cinema instead of going to work. He saw a Chaplin movie four times, lost his job and started what would become the biggest festival homage to Chaplin in the world. Doctor Aswani would never be the perfect man because the perfect man works for his country's greatness. The perfect man wakes up early to go to work and waves at his wife from the car as he heads towards the daily traffic-jam that would take him to his office. Charlot would never be the perfect man either

"With the supposed shortening of our collective attention spans, what future is there for long narrative fiction in the age of the internet? Contemporary Fictions of Attention maps out a shared interest in attention within 21st-century fiction and connects this interest to a series of debates surrounding ethics, work, the everyday, boredom and entertainment, as well as a broader context for the future of the book, fiction and reading itself in an increasingly digital culture. Alice Bennett examines work by writers including Joshua Cohen, Ben Lerner, Tom McCarthy, Ali Smith, Zadie Smith, and David Foster Wallace, and argues that they are all writing 'fictions of attention' "

This book examines how early research on literary activities outside national literatures such as émigré literature or diasporic literature conceived of the loss of "mother-tongue" as a tragedy, and how it perpetuated the ideology of national language by relying on the dichotomy of native language/foreign language. It transcends these limitations by examining modern Japanese literature and literary criticism through modern philology, the vernacularization movement, and Korean-Japanese literature. Through the insights of recent philosophical/linguistic theories, it reveals the political problems of the notion of "mother-tongue" in literary and linguistic theories and proposes strategies to realize genuinely "exophonic" and "translational" literature beyond the confines of nation. Examining the notion of "mother-tongue" in literature and literary criticism, the author deconstructs the concept and language itself as an apparatus of nation-state in order to imagine alternative literature, genuinely creolized and heterogeneous. Offering a comparative, transnational perspective on the significance of the mother tongue in contemporary literature, this is a key read for students of modern Japanese literature, language and culture, as well as those interested in theories of translation and bilingualism--back cover Introduction : Theoretical presumptions and comparative perspective -- "Mother-tongue" and the formulation of the national language in Meiji linguistics -- Gembun-itchi movement : the creation of a lingusitic state apparatus -- Korean-Japanese writers and the redefinition of bokoru-go -- Dialectal literature as bilingual literature -- Contemporaty bilingual/exophonic writers and their politics -- Deconstructing language as a ground for mother-tongue

Since the beginning of this century there is a growing scholarly interest in the connection between children, childhood and theology. Oversimplified, two main trends developed. The one is moving from theology to childhood and is called Theologies of Childhood and the other is moving from children as hermeneutic lens to theology and is called Child Theology. With this movement in theology, partly sparkled by Christian organisations working in the field of holistic child development, a search for a deeper understanding of the theological underpinning for this work came to the fore. This challenges Theological thinking to move beyond the traditional Education paradigm when thinking about children and children’s ministry

"French Fiction Today focuses on the French novel in the twenty-first century, examining a series of works that are exemplary of broader currents in the genre. Each of these texts wagers insistently upon our willingness to speculate about literature and its uses, in an age when the value of literature is no longer taken as axiomatic. Each of these texts may be thought of as a critical novel, a form that calls upon us to engage with it in a critical manner, promising that meaning will arise in the articulation of writing and reading. Each of these authors participates in a debate about what the novel is as a cultural form in our present-and about what it may become, in a future that begins right now" -- Introduction -- Marie NDiaye's greening -- Jean Rolin's explosion -- Christine Montalbetti's engaging narrations -- Antoine Volodine's crossings -- Marie Cosnay's roman-fleuve -- Patrick Deville's novelty -- Gérard Gavarry's ceremony -- Lydie Salvayre's voices -- Tanguy Viel's American novel -- Pierre Bayard's wormholes

To what degree are we able to listen to different kinds of intelligences, and how can we incite receptivity? How do we address the fact that the right to listen is relative, and that the right not to listen, or to remain silent, is also a genuine stance? Can we position listening as a political act? And how do we further develop our ability to listen for what is left out, and why? What Now? documents a program of sound installations, audio works, film screenings and performances that question our ability to 'listen' held under the title "The Politics of Listening" in the second annual 'What Now?' symposium, organized by Art in General in collaboration with the Vera List Center for Art and Politics, as part of Alignment, the Vera List Center's 2013-2015 curatorial focus theme Mechanics, methods, metaphysics -- Fact, fiction, and the in-between -- Community actions, reciprocity, co-determination
