Veranstalterinfo: To commemorate the post-renovation reopening of the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo, we offer an exhibition that traces the development of modern art born out of the dialogue between nature and humankind. The event has been realized in collaboration with the Museum Folkwang in Essen, Germany. Both institutions were founded on private collections: that of Karl Ernst Osthaus [1874-1921] in the one case and Matsukata Kōjirō [1866-1950] in the other. As we can see, these two men were near contemporaries. Earlier in the year, modern artworks from the Matsukata Collection and the Osthaus Collection were brought together for another showing in Germany, Renoir, Monet, Gauguin: Images of a Floating World (6 February-15 May 2022, Museum Folkwang). The present exhibition, In Dialogue with Nature, comprises works collected from the museums' earliest beginnings down to the present day: paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs, spanning from German Romanticism to the art of the twentieth century (with Impressionism and Post-Impressionism at the core). It sets out to explore how sensibility to nature has contributed to the development of artistic expression in the modern era. The transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth centuries was accompanied by rapid modernization in many fields: industry, society, science. Artists, looking at nature with new knowledge and an altered gaze, created a diverse range of works in response to this always fertile source of inspiration. Some leapt from the studio into the light of the open air, attempting to grasp the ephemeral moment; others, in the pursuit of an eternal vision of nature, relied on their own insights or experimented with innovative forms. Certain works chose cycles of nature on which to project human endeavors. Please enjoy the reverberations of these manifold images, hewn out of the infinite expanse of nature, the fruits of two combined collections: everything from the smallest roadside flowers to the vast universe and all humanity contained therein. At a time when the relationship between nature and humankind is undergoing profound reassessment, we sincerely hope the artworks on display may lead visitors to a creative and heartfelt dialogue with the natural world.

"While today Spain is a favored destination for tourists from around the world, historically it was overlooked to the degree that there was the view that 'after the Pyrenees comes Africa.' It was an unknown land to its fellow Europeans, a foreign, little-understood country. Yet, the full movement of people and goods between the rest of Europe and Spain was set off by Napoleon's invasion and the Spanish War of Independence (1808-1814). This led to the full 'discovery' of the exotic fascination of Spain by other European countries during the Romantic era. Flamenco, bullfighting, the Alhambra, Velázquez, Don Quixote - there are many typical images that come to mind at the mention of Spain, and these images were all established by foreign visitors to the country in the 19th century. The print form, which could be produced in multiple copies and easily distributed, was the medium that played a major role in the formation and spread of these images. This exhibition presents a largely chronological view of the historical development of prints related to Spain from the early 17th century through the latter half of the 20th century. The approximately 240 works presented here consider the contribution made by prints, with their ability to copy and convey the formation and distribution of images related to Spanish culture and art. In addition to traversing the oeuvres of Goya, Fortuny, Picasso, Miró, Dalí, and other Spanish masters, the exhibition also introduces a number of works on Spanish subjects made in 19th-century France and England by Delacroix, Manet, and others. Working from the basis of the collections of the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo, this exhibition is comprised of loans from some 40 lenders within Japan, making it an opportunity to consider how Spanish art has been received in Japan and how such extensive collections have been formed."--

"This exhibition focuses on the many painters who were beguiled by Brittany during the latter half of the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries. With works that focus on Brittany's landscapes, customs, and history, what each artist sought and discerned in this 'foreign realm' is explored. In addition to featuring Western artists, primarily French, the exhibition for the first time brings to light works by Japanese-born painters who traveled to France during Japan's late Meiji to Taisho periods and found their way to Brittany. With around thirty Japanese museums and private collections and two overseas museums making works available on loan, the exhibition assembles 160 or so pieces encompassing paintings, drawings, prints, and posters, literary works, guidebooks, picture postcards sent by artists, and even the trunks they used to carry their possessions when traveling to Brittany."--Preface
