    Scholarship in medieval studies of the past 20 or so years has offered some provocative experiments in, and elegant exempla of, style. Scholars such as Anne Clark Bartlett, Kathleen Biddick, Catherine Brown, Brantley Bryant, Michael Camille, Jeffrey Jerome Cohen, Carolyn Dinshaw, James Earl, L.O. Aranye Fradenburg, Roberta Frank, Amy Hollywood, Cary Howie, C. Stephen Jaeger, Eileen Joy, Anna Klosowska, Nicola Masciandaro, Peggy McCracken, Paul Strohm, David Wallace, and Paul Zumthor, among others, have blended the conventions of academic writing with those of fiction, drama, memoir, comedy, polemic, and lyricism, and/or have developed what some would describe as elegant, and arresting (and in some cases, deliciously difficult) prose styles. As these registers merge, they can produce what has been called a queer historiographical encounter (or in queer theorist Elizabeth Freeman’s terms, “an erotohistoriography”), a “poetics of intensification,” and even a “new aestheticism.” The work of these scholars has also opened up debates (some rancorous) that often install what the editors of this volume feel are false binaries between form and content, feeling and thinking, affect and rigor, poetry and history, attachment and critical distance, enjoyment and discipline, style and substance. As Anna Klosowska writes in her contribution to this volume, The question of style, as it applies to medieval studies, is precisely the overcoming of that dichotomy between Nature and Man: a third element. And when the critique proceeds through the denunciation of the inimitability of someone’s style, as if it were the third sex, ungenerative, queer, sterile, sodomitic, lesbian, etc., the critic unconsciously puts his finger on exactly what style is; but that critic is mistaken about the style’s supposedly non-generative powers. In fact, style, neither fact nor theory but facilitating the transition between the two, is … the generative principle itself.

    This article challenges the way côla and periods are delineated by exegetes involved in the so-called “sound mapping” approach. Specifically, the author argues that certain criteria for identifying côla and periods that are provided in both the initial version of the method outlined by Margaret E. Lee and Bernard B. Scott (2009) and the refined version proposed by Dan Nässelqvist (2015) conflict with the data from ancient sources. In other words, the criteria typically used for delineating côla and periods fail to accurately reflect the ancient conventions of structuring prose texts. Given the crucial role of the notions of côlon and period for the approach of “sound mapping,” further investigation into the rhetorical treatises from the Graeco-Roman world is warranted. Such an investigation, as this study aims to show, allows us to get a deeper understanding of the ancient system of colometry and to lay the foundation for a more historically-informed set of criteria.

Simon Reader pursues this argument in original readings of unpublished writing by prominent Victorians, offering a more expansive approach to literary formalism for the twenty-first century. Neither drafts nor diaries, the notes of Charles Darwin, Oscar Wilde, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Vernon Lee, and George Gissing record ephemeral and nonlinear experiences, revealing each author's desire to leave their fragments scattered and unused. Presenting notes in terms of genre allows Reader to suggest inventive new accounts of key Victorian texts, including The Picture of Dorian Gray, On the Origin of Species, and Hopkins's devotional lyrics, and to reinterpret these works as meditations on the ethics of compiling and using data.     When working on Rom 9:5, exegetes face a crucial punctuation issue. The challenge consists in determining whether the expression ὁ ὢν ἐπὶ πάντων θεὸς εὐλογητὸς εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας (9:5b) should be read as an independent clause, or, rather, as a relative clause attached with ὁ Χριστὸς τὸ κατὰ σάρκα (9:5a). According to the first option, Paul merely concludes his development with a doxology to God the Father. Following the second line, however, the apostle would make a Christological claim by asserting that Christ is God. The stakes are high since Paul nowhere else in his letters makes a clear claim that Christ is God. This article aims to reconsider this famous crux interpretum in light of ancient colometry, taking into account the principles of colometric structuration described in Greek and Latin rhetorical treatises. Specifically, the author argues that the combined presence of the three so-called Gorgianic figures (parisosis, paromoiosis, and antithesis) supports the case of light punctuation (a comma) between v. 5a and v. 5b, which in turn suggests reading v. 5b as a relative clause that qualifies Christ.

    Belegt werden soll, wie Nietzsche die Literatur beeinflusste und wie seine Themen literarisch umgesetzt wurden. In Rede stehen dabei Robert Musil, Stefan George, Rainer-Maria Rilke, Heimito von Doderer, Else Lasker-Schüler, Hermann Broch und auch neuere Literaten: Bertolt Brecht, Thomas Bernhard, Heiner Müller, Martin Walser und Durs Grünbein. Abgesehen von den neueren Autoren, die bisher nicht in diesem Zusammenhang thematisiert wurden, eröffnen auch die Beiträge über die ältere Rezeption neue Perspektiven, sodass hier für beide Perioden neue Erkenntnisse bezüglich Nietzsches Einfluss auf sie vorgelegt werden. Zudem treten die beiden Rezeptionsphasen in einen Dialog, der verdeutlicht, welche Veränderungen sich ergeben haben und der damit die Forschung bereichert. Eine Bereicherung, die auch Auswirkungen auf die Germanistik und die philosophische Nietzscheforschung haben wird

    Die Studie präsentiert eine neue Lektüre von Nietzsches philosophischem Hauptwerk „Also sprach Zarathustra“. Der Text hat seit seinem ersten Erscheinen (1883–1885) extreme und stark divergierende Reaktionen hervorgerufen: Galt Nietzsche um 1900 als ‚Dichter-Philosoph‘, so bot zugleich die anti-demokratische und elitistische Haltung Anlass für vehemente politische Kritik. Die französische Philosophie der 1960er und -70er Jahre fand in Nietzsche hingegen den Kritiker und Freigeist par excellence. Den Sprachwitz von Nietzsches Text sowie dessen ironischen und parodistischen Charakter betonten poststrukturalistische Lesarten der 1980er und -90er Jahre. Vor dem Hintergrund einer bis heute fortwirkenden Spannung zwischen dekonstruktiven und hermeneutischen Zugriffen auf den Text unternimmt die Studie eine neue und konsequente Rekonstruktion der eigenwilligen Poetik von „Also sprach Zarathustra“.

    This article argues that the micro-structure of Paul's letters is intrinsically linked to an aural logic. Taking 2 Corinthians 10:8-11 as an example and using the notions of côlon and period as described in the rhetoric and stylistic treatises of the Graeco-Roman world, I will show both the methods and the extent to which it is possible to reconstitute its original "punctuation" - i.e., the different breaks that punctuated this passage when it was read aloud. This will allow me to shed new light on the structure of the passage and, especially, on the debated question of the place of verse 9, namely the extent to which it is linked with either verse 8 or verses 10-11, or is rather independent. More generally, this article is an invitation to develop colometric analysis as an additional tool in debates concerning micro-structure and punctuation of NT texts.

I investigated cases where kōl does not express totality in the sense of “one hundred percent.” I present a collection of examples that show that kōl can also be used (1) to express variety, (2) as hyperbole, (3) in a way defined by the context, and (4) for stylistic reasons. I argue that kōl sometimes needs to be translated with expressions such as “all kinds of,” “all other,” “in unity,” or in other context-sensitive ways; where it is perceived as redundant or misleading, it may remain untranslated.

Simon Reader pursues this argument in original readings of unpublished writing by prominent Victorians, offering a more expansive approach to literary formalism for the twenty-first century. Neither drafts nor diaries, the notes of Charles Darwin, Oscar Wilde, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Vernon Lee, and George Gissing record ephemeral and nonlinear experiences, revealing each author's desire to leave their fragments scattered and unused. Presenting notes in terms of genre allows Reader to suggest inventive new accounts of key Victorian texts, including The Picture of Dorian Gray, On the Origin of Species, and Hopkins's devotional lyrics, and to reinterpret these works as meditations on the ethics of compiling and using data. Anhand der als "Nachtgesänge" bekannten Gedichte, die Hölderlin 1804 in einem viel gelesenen Frauentaschenbuch publiziert hat, ergründet Tobias Christ die Widersprüche und das Scheitern einer Lyrik, die weit über den Horizont zeitgenössischer Gattungskonventionen und Leseerwartungen hinausging.

In Rede stehen dabei Robert Musil, Stefan George, Rainer-Maria Rilke, Heimito von Doderer, Else Lasker-Schüler, Hermann Broch und auch neuere Literaten: Bertolt Brecht, Thomas Bernhard, Heiner Müller, Martin Walser und Durs Grünbein. Abgesehen von den neueren Autoren, die bisher nicht in diesem Zusammenhang thematisiert wurden, eröffnen auch die Beiträge über die ältere Rezeption neue Perspektiven, sodass hier für beide Perioden neue Erkenntnisse bezüglich Nietzsches Einfluss auf sie vorgelegt werden. Zudem treten die beiden Rezeptionsphasen in einen Dialog, der verdeutlicht, welche Veränderungen sich ergeben haben und der damit die Forschung bereichert. Eine Bereicherung, die auch Auswirkungen auf die Germanistik und die philosophische Nietzscheforschung haben wird

    Die Studie präsentiert eine neue Lektüre von Nietzsches philosophischem Hauptwerk "Also sprach Zarathustra". Der Text hat seit seinem ersten Erscheinen (1883-1885) extreme und stark divergierende Reaktionen hervorgerufen: Galt Nietzsche um 1900 als ,Dichter-Philosoph', so bot zugleich die anti-demokratische und elitistische Haltung Anlass für vehemente politische Kritik. Die französische Philosophie der 1960er und -70er Jahre fand in Nietzsche hingegen den Kritiker und Freigeist par excellence. Den Sprachwitz von Nietzsches Text sowie dessen ironischen und parodistischen Charakter betonten poststrukturalistische Lesarten der 1980er und -90er Jahre. Vor dem Hintergrund einer bis heute fortwirkenden Spannung zwischen dekonstruktiven und hermeneutischen Zugriffen auf den Text unternimmt die Studie eine neue und konsequente Rekonstruktion der eigenwilligen Poetik von "Also sprach Zarathustra"

Looking at a variety of formats including novels, drama, film, graphic fiction, and lyric poetry the book also includes focus on specific authors such as Shakespeare, Chaucer, Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, and Viet Thanh Nguyen. The volume introduces the theoretical groundwork, covering such categories as affect theory, affective neuroscience, cognitive science, evolution, and history of emotions. It examines the range of emotions that play a special role in literature, including happiness, fear, aesthetic delight, empathy, and sympathy, as well as aspects of literature (style, narrative voice, and others) that bear on emotional response. Finally, it explores ethical and political concerns that are often intertwined with emotional response, including racism, colonialism, disability, ecology, gender, sexuality, and trauma. This is a crucial guide to the ways in which new, interdisciplinary understandings of emotion and affect—in fields from neuroscience to social theory--are changing the study of literature and of the ways those new understandings are impacted by work on literature also.
