This study examines factors predicting participation in study abroad programs using a bivariate probit selection model where the probabilities of attending university and studying abroad are jointly estimated. Given that unobserved variables influencing these two sequential events are likely to be correlated, this model provides estimates that are less contaminated by misspecification bias compared to those from a conventional univariate probit model of study abroad participation. Using data from an Italian nationally representative survey, the results emphasise the importance of controlling for unobservables. They indicate that the relationship between type of upper secondary school and study abroad participation disappears once selectivity bias is accounted for.

Utilizing a theoretical framework of the racial and ethnic habitus constructed from Bourdieu's habitus, in addition to theories of racial identity and whiteness studies, this study examines the potential of short-term mission trips to raise the racial and ethnic consciousness of white participants, oftentimes a first step in improving race relations. Due to the limited empirical research on short-term missions, research on study abroad regarding racial and ethnic consciousness is utilized as a proxy. It is concluded that the racial and ethnic habitus is not easily malleable to social forces that are present in short-term mission trips, and even if it is, the effects may be temporary. Furthermore, it is more likely that differing racial and ethnic habituses may result in conflict between the various stakeholders involved in short-term missions. It is evident that more empirical research needs to be conducted on short-term missions in order to provide a better understanding of these religious initiatives.

This paper investigates the impact of the Science without Borders (Ciência sem Fronteiras) (CSF) programme on participants' post-graduation enrolment, employment, and entrepreneurship. The programme was launched in 2011 to increase students' human capital and interest in science and postgraduate education studies through a substantial increase in scholarships for Brazilians to carry out part of their undergraduate studies abroad. We exploit variation in the approval rate across CSF selection calls for the same destination country and year and combine 17 public and private administrative records to track CSF candidates' outcomes up to eight years after the call. The main results suggest that the programme did not achieve its goals of increasing approved student enrolment in postgraduate education programmes in Brazil. Even though the programme could have improved student skills and acted as a market signalling, we do not find effects on the probability of working in the formal labour market, or as formal entrepreneurs. Using detailed data from one top university, we show that approved students graduate more often, but take longer to graduate, which may have negative impacts on their labour market outcomes. Finally, although we cannot rule out that students moved to a foreign country after the programme, we show that the likelihood of this event may have decreased over time.
