    Demosthenes (384-322 b.c.) was an Athenian statesman and a widely read author whose life, times, and rhetorical abilities captivated the minds of generations. Sifting through the rubble of a mostly lost tradition of ancient scholarship, Craig A. Gibson tells the story of how one group of ancient scholars helped their readers understand this man's writings. This book collects for the first time, translates, and offers explanatory notes on all the substantial fragments of ancient philological and historical commentaries on Demosthenes. Using these texts to illuminate an important aspect of Graeco-Roman antiquity that has hitherto been difficult to glimpse, Gibson gives a detailed portrait of a scholarly industry that touched generations of ancient readers from the first century b.c. to the fifth century and beyond.In this lucidly organized work, Gibson surveys the physical form of the commentaries, traces the history of how they were passed down, and explains their sources, interests, and readership.     This collection brings together for the first time more than 360 of Mark Twain's short works written between 1851, the year of his first extant sketch, and 1871, when he renounced his ties with the Buffalo Express and the Galaxy, resolving to ";write but little for periodicals hereafter."; In October 1871 Clemens and his family moved to Hartford, where they would live until 1891. No longer a journalist, he was about to complete his second full-length book, Roughing It. The literary apprenticeship that he had begun twenty years before in the print shops of Hannibal, and pursued in the newspaper offices of Virginia City, San Francisco, and Buffalo, had at last come to a close. The selections included in these volumes represent a generous sampling from Mark Twain's most imaginative journalism, a few set speeches, a few poems, and hundreds of tales and sketches recovered from more than fifty newspapers and journals, as well as two dozen unpublished items of various description—the main body of what can now be found of his early literary and subliterary work, though by no means everything written during those twenty years of experimentation. The selections are ordered chronologically and therefore provide a nearly continuous record of the author's literary activity from his earliest juvenilia up through the mature work that he published in the Galaxy, the Buffalo Express, and many other journals

    Mark Twain among the Indians and Other Indigenous Peoples is the first book-length study of the writer’s evolving views regarding the aboriginal inhabitants of North America and the Southern Hemisphere, and his deeply conflicted representations of them in fiction, newspaper sketches, and speeches. Using a wide range of archival materials—including previously unexamined marginalia in books from Clemens’s personal library—Driscoll charts the development of the writer’s ethnocentric attitudes about Indians and savagery in relation to the various geographic and social milieus of communities he inhabited at key periods in his life, from antebellum Hannibal, Missouri, and the Sierra Nevada mining camps of the 1860s to the progressive urban enclave of Hartford’s Nook Farm. The book also examines the impact of Clemens’s 1895–96 world lecture tour, when he traveled to Australia and New Zealand and learned firsthand about the dispossession and mistreatment of native peoples under British colonial rule. This groundbreaking work of cultural studies offers fresh readings of canonical texts such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, Roughing It, and Following the Equator, as well as a number of Twain’s shorter works

Im ersten Kapitel wird dem Aufstieg der literarischen Redekultur anhand des modernen Intellektuellenbegriffs um 1900 nachgegangen. Das zweite Kapitel beleuchtet die Schriftstellerrede im institutionellen Kontext des Schutzverbands deutscher Schriftsteller und der Sektion für Dichtkunst der Preußischen Akademie der Künste. Im dritten und letzten Kapitel wird das literarische Redefieber des Goethejahrs 1932 besprochen. Dieses Buch enthält anschauliche Statistiken zur Schriftstellerrede und bietet ebenfalls Zugriff auf ein Onlineverzeichnis (270 S.) von mehr als 1400 Reden von 123 Autoren. Chr.) hat ein vielseitiges Werk hinterlassen (Reden, Essays, Dialoge, die zum Teil wie kurze Theaterstücke in Prosa wirken, Erzählungen), das ein lebendiges Bild von vielen Facetten der Antike (Mythologie und Götter; Phänomene der zeitgenössischen Bildung und Religion sowie ihre manchmal dubiosen Vertreter; ethische und soziale Fragen) vermittelt und seit seinen Lebzeiten stark rezipiert wurde. Das Buch möchte die thematischen und literarischen Aspekte dieses Werks vorstellen und zeigen, warum Lukian noch heute lesenswert ist und geradezu als „Botschafter der Antike“ gelten kann. The orator and satirist Lucian of Samosata (c. 120 – after 180 AD) left behind a varied body of work (speeches, essays, dialogues, of which some resemble short prose plays, stories), which gives a vivid picture of many facets of Antiquity (mythology and gods; phenomena of contemporary education and religion and their sometimes dubious representatives; ethical and social issues) and which has been widely received since his lifetime. The book aims to present the thematic and literary aspects of this work and to show why Lucian is still worth reading today and can be considered virtually an "ambassador of Antiquity".
