    This volume sets out to construct a tentative bridge between the physical and perceived (academic) worlds, between the understandings of culture and nature, their spatiality and temporality by tackling the spatiality of culture phenomena across disciplinary boundaries. The contributions are arranged around a general question of how humans organise the spaces in which they live. The book is divided according to three themes: the humanities and ecosemiotic approach to nature, constructing nature, and examining environmental and landscape change. The first provides an historical review of the humanities and expands on the more theoretical themes. The second section discusses some ways in constructing (wild) nature with specific examples. The final one illustrates the changes that various cultures have brought about in the environment examining landscapes and domestication. The space of culture and the place of nature in various cultures are discussed critically throughout the volume in a way that challenges their ontological separations and invites to discuss culture-nature relationships on a more balanced basis.

    On the unstable boundaries between “interior” and “exterior,” “private” and “public,” and always in some way relating to a “beyond,” the imagery of interior space in literature reveals itself as an often disruptive code of subjectivity and of modernity. The wide variety of interior spaces elicited in literature — from the odd room over the womb, secluded parks, and train compartments, to the city as a world under a cloth — reveal a common defining feature: these interiors can all be analyzed as codes of a paradoxical, both assertive and fragile, subjectivity in its own unique time and history. They function as subtexts that define subjectivity, time, and history as profoundly ambiguous realities, on interchangeable existential, socio-political, and epistemological levels. This volume addresses the imagery of interior spaces in a number of iconic and also lesser known yet significant authors of European, North American, and Latin American literature of the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries: Djuna Barnes, Edmond de Goncourt, William Faulkner, Gabriel García Márquez, Benito Pérez Galdós, Elsa Morante, Robert Musil, Jules Romains, Peter Waterhouse, and Émile Zola.

    Mapping with Words re-conceptualizes settler writing as literary cartography. The topographical descriptions of early Canadian settler writers generated not only picturesque and sublime landscapes, but also verbal maps. These worked to orient readers, reinforcing and expanding the cartographic order of the emerging colonial dominion. Drawing upon the work of critical and cultural geographers as well as literary theorists, Sarah Wylie Krotz opens up important aesthetic and political dimensions of both familiar and obscure texts from the nineteenth century, including Thomas Cary’s Abram’s Plains, George Monro Grant’s Ocean to Ocean, and Susanna Moodie’s Roughing it in the Bush. Highlighting the complex territoriality that emerges from their cartographic aesthetics, Krotz offers fresh readings of these texts, illuminating their role in an emerging spatial imaginary that was at once deeply invested in the production of colonial spaces and at the same time enmeshed in the realities of confronting Indigenous sovereignties

    We study the long-run implications of regional and ethnic favoritism in Africa. Combining geocoded individual-level survey data from the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) with data on national leaders’ birthplaces across 41 African countries, we explore the educational attainment of adults who were exposed to favoritism at various points during their life. We find that generic male respondents exposed to regional favoritism during their adolescence have higher educational attainment later in life. This higher human capital accumulated by men leads to more stable employment. For generic women, we observe no beneficial effects of regional favoritism. However, those women who belong to the same ethnic group as their national leader witness an increase in their educational attainment. These results indicate that regular inhabitants rather than only a narrow elite benefit from regional favoritism.

    We study the economic implications of mineral resource activity for non-mining regions at the grid-level across the African continent. We find that capital cities benefit from mineral resource activity anywhere in the country. Leaders’ birth regions also benefit, but only in autocratic regimes. Generic non-mining regions, on the other hand, are worse off. These results suggest that regional redistribution of resource rents in Africa is primarily undertaken to the benefit of capital cities and leaders’ birth regions. In contrast, non-mining regions do not appear to be sufficiently compensated for the negative spillovers they may face due to mining activity elsewhere in the country.

    In this paper, we study the extent to which ministers engage in regional favoritism. We are the first to provide a comprehensive analysis of a larger set of the governing elite, not just focusing on the primary leader. We manually collect birthplaces of this governing elite globally. Combining this information with extended nighttime luminosity and novel population data over the period from 1992 to 2016, we utilize a staggered difference-in-differences estimator and find that birthplaces of ministers globally emit on average roughly 9 % more nightlight. This result is predominantly attributable to the African sub-sample. We find no evidence that the measured effect is driven by, or induces, migration to the home regions of ministers. The size of our data set lets us investigate heterogeneities along a number of dimensions: political power, ministerial portfolio, and the institutional setting. In dieser Studie untersuchen wir, in welchem Ausmaß Minister regionale Begünstigung betreiben. Wir sind die Ersten, die eine umfassende Analyse eines größeren Datensatzes der regierenden Elite vornehmen, der sich nicht nur auf Staatsoberhäupter bzw. Regierungschefs konzentriert. Dazu sammeln wir Informationen über die Geburtsorte von Ministern weltweit durch qualitative Recherche. Diese Informationen kombinieren wir mit erweiterten Daten zur nächtlichen Beleuchtung und Bevölkerungsdaten für den Zeitraum von 1992 bis 2016. Wir verwenden einen gestaffelten Difference-in-Differences-Schätzer und stellen fest, dass die Geburtsorte von Ministern im Durchschnitt etwa 9% mehr Nachtlicht ausstrahlen. Dieser Effekt wird hauptsächlich von afrikanischen Ländern getrieben. Darüber hinaus finden wir keine Hinweise darauf, dass dieser Effekt durch Migration in die Heimatregionen von Ministern verursacht oder gefördert wird. Die Größe unseres Datensatzes ermöglicht es uns, Heterogenitäten entlang einer Reihe von Dimensionen zu untersuchen: politische Macht, Portfolios und institutionelle Rahmenbedingungen.

    In this paper we explore the role of regional connections with a national leader as a pull factor of internal migration in Benin by exploiting granular census data over the period 1991-2013. The empirical analysis is based on a gravity model of migration and utilizes a PPML estimator. Controlling for a diverse set of fixed effects, we show that being connected to a national leader goes along with statistically significant levels of migration into the respective districts. We also provide more detailed evidence that links these migration movements to the presence of political favoritism through its ability to improve economic opportunities and the access to public goods at the local level. The evidence in this paper blends in well with the related literature on political favoritism extending it by a previously unexplored dimension. In diesem Aufsatz analysieren wir die Rolle regionaler Verbindungen zu Präsidenten als Anziehungsfaktor für interne Migration in Benin. Hierzu nutzen wir detaillierte Zensusdaten aus dem Zeitraum von 1991 bis 2013. Unsere empirische Analyse basiert auf einem Migrations-Gravitationsmodell und verwendet einen Poisson-Pseudo-Maximum-Likelihood (PPML) Schätzer. Wir stellen fest, dass eine regionale Verbindung zu einem Präsidenten mit einer statistisch signifikanten Migration in die entsprechenden Bezirke einhergeht. Darüber hinaus präsentieren wir detailliertere Evidenz, die diese Migrationsbewegungen mit politischer Bevorzugung verknüpft. Politische Bevorzugung hat das Potential, die wirtschaftlichen Bedingungen und den Zugang zu öffentlichen Gütern auf lokaler Ebene zu verbesseren, was wiederum Anreize zur Migration schafft. Unsere Ergebnisse fügen sich nahtlos in die bestehende Literatur zur politischen Bevorzugung ein und erweitern diese um eine bisher unerforschte Dimension.
