Was ist Fiktion? Was ist der Charakter eines bestimmten Genres? Solche Fragen lassen sich nicht essentialistisch beantworten, sondern es kommt darauf an, die sozialen Praktiken zu untersuchen, in denen Menschen agieren, wenn sie literarische Texte lesen. Eine eingehende empirische Untersuchung der Geschichte der miteinander verknüpften Literatur-, Fiktions- und Genrepraktiken wurde bisher jedoch nicht unternommen. Die Arbeit nimmt sich dieses Desiderats an, indem sie anhand exemplarischer Konstellationen untersucht, wie bestimmte Genrepraktiken charakteristische Text-Welt-Verhältnisse herstellen. Zu diesem Zweck rekonstruiert die Untersuchung auf breiter empirischer Basis Lektürepraktiken von Literaturkritikern mithilfe qualitativ-hermeneutischer und quantitativ-statistischer Methoden. Mit Studien zum historischen Roman, Tendenzroman und Zeitroman sowie zum Schlüsselroman bietet die Arbeit nicht nur eine neue Sicht auf die Beziehung von Literatur und Wirklichkeit in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart; Analysen zu Wechselwirkungen zwischen unterschiedlichen Typen literarischer Praktiken eröffnen eine neue Perspektive auf literarische Kommunikation im Allgemeinen und die Geschichte der Fiktionalität im Besonderen What is literature? What is fiction? What constitutes a particular genre? We cannot provide essentialist answers to these questions and instead have to examine the social practices in which people act when they read literary texts. This study sheds light on the history of the interconnected practices of literature, fiction, and genre, opening up new perspectives on the relationship between literature and reality

    One of the basic insights of the book is that there is a notion of non-relational linguistic representation which can fruitfully be employed in a systematic approach to literary fiction. This notion allows us to develop an improved understanding of the ontological nature of fictional entities. A related insight is that the customary distinction between extra-fictional and intra-fictional contexts has only a secondary theoretical importance. This distinction plays a central role in nearly all contemporary theories of literary fiction. There is a tendency among researchers to take it as obvious that the contrast between these two types of contexts is crucial for understanding the boundary that divides fiction from non-fiction. Seen from the perspective of non-relational representation, the key question is rather how representational networks come into being and how consumers of literary texts can, and do, engage with these networks. As a whole, the book provides, for the first time, a comprehensive artefactualist account of the nature of fictional entities

    During a tumultuous period when financial speculation began rapidly to outpace industrial production and consumption, Victorian financial journalists commonly explained the instability of finance by criticizing its inherent artifice—drawing persistent attention to what they called "fictitious capital." In a shift that naturalized this artifice, this critique of fictitious capital virtually disappeared by the 1860s, replaced by notions of fickle investor psychology and mental equilibrium encapsulated in the fascinating metaphor of "psychic economy."In close rhetorical readings of financial journalism, political economy, and the works of Dickens, Eliot, and Trollope, Kornbluh examines the psychological framing of economics, one of the nineteenth century’s most enduring legacies, reminding us that the current dominant paradigm for understanding financial crisis has a history of its own. She shows how novels illuminate this displacement and ironize ideological metaphors linking psychology and economics, thus demonstrating literature’s unique facility for evaluating ideas in process. Inheritors of this novelistic project, Marx and Freud each advance a critique of psychic economy that refuses to naturalize capitalism

    This collection of new poems by one of the most respected poets in the United States uses motifs of advance and recovery, doubt and conviction—in an emotional relation to the known world. Heralded as "one of our most vital, unclassifiable writers" by the Voice Literary Supplement, Fanny Howe has published more than twenty books and is the recipient of the Gold Medal for Poetry from the Commonwealth Club of California. In addition, her Selected Poems received the 2001 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize for the Most Outstanding Book of Poetry Published in 2000 from the Academy of American Poets.The poems in Gone describe the transit of a psyche, driven by uncertainty and by love, through various stations and experiences.     Mit seinem Buch „Nach der Endlichkeit" hat der französische Philosoph Quentin Meillassoux die Denkbewegung des „Spekulativen Realismus" angestoßen. Dieser Beitrag stellt zunächst zentrale Argumentationsfiguren von Meillassoux vor. Dabei geht es nicht um die philosophische Fachdebatte einzelner Varianten von Realismus, Idealismus oder Naturalismus. Was hier interessiert, ist quasi eine zeitdiagnostische Vermutung: Dass sich nämlich an dieser Veröffentlichung eine signifikante Kulturveränderung des Denkens zeigt, welche auch die Möglichkeitsräume christlicher Praktiken und deren Theologie betrifft. Insofern ist dieser Text aber riskant, weil er sich auf einen Diskurs bezieht, der noch überhaupt nicht fertig gedacht ist und sich als Sackgasse erweisen kann. In drei abschließenden kleinen Ausblicken wird deshalb vorsichtig getestet, was sich praktisch-theologisch verändern könnte, wenn man sich von Meillassoux irritieren lässt. With his book After Finitude, the French philosopher Quentin Meillassoux established the movement of thought called "speculative realism". This article first presents main figures of argumentation from this book. Here it is not concerned with the specialized philosophical debate on particular versions of realism, idealism or naturalism. The point of interest is, in effect, a conjecture relating to a diagnosis of the times, namely that, with this publication, a significant change of thinking regarding culture appears which also affects the realms of possibility of Christian practices and their theology. In this respect, however, the text is risky because it refers to a discourse which has not yet been thought out to the end at all and which can prove to be a dead end. In three brief closing remarks concerning the future, the author therefore carefully tests what could change at a practical-theological level if one lets himself or herself be irritated by Meillassoux.

Was ist Fiktion? Was ist der Charakter eines bestimmten Genres? Solche Fragen lassen sich nicht essentialistisch beantworten, sondern es kommt darauf an, die sozialen Praktiken zu untersuchen, in denen Menschen agieren, wenn sie literarische Texte lesen. Eine eingehende empirische Untersuchung der Geschichte der miteinander verknüpften Literatur-, Fiktions- und Genrepraktiken wurde bisher jedoch nicht unternommen. Die Arbeit nimmt sich dieses Desiderats an, indem sie anhand exemplarischer Konstellationen untersucht, wie bestimmte Genrepraktiken charakteristische Text-Welt-Verhältnisse herstellen. Zu diesem Zweck rekonstruiert die Untersuchung auf breiter empirischer Basis Lektürepraktiken von Literaturkritikern mithilfe qualitativ-hermeneutischer und quantitativ-statistischer Methoden. Mit Studien zum historischen Roman, Tendenzroman und Zeitroman sowie zum Schlüsselroman bietet die Arbeit nicht nur eine neue Sicht auf die Beziehung von Literatur und Wirklichkeit in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart; Analysen zu Wechselwirkungen zwischen unterschiedlichen Typen literarischer Praktiken eröffnen eine neue Perspektive auf literarische Kommunikation im Allgemeinen und die Geschichte der Fiktionalität im Besonderen What is literature? What is fiction? What constitutes a particular genre? We cannot provide essentialist answers to these questions and instead have to examine the social practices in which people act when they read literary texts. This study sheds light on the history of the interconnected practices of literature, fiction, and genre, opening up new perspectives on the relationship between literature and reality

    In archaic and classical Greece, statues played a constant role in people's religious, political, economic, aesthetic, and mental lives. Evidence of many kinds demonstrates that ancient Greeks thought about--and interacted with--statues in ways very different from our own. This book recovers ancient thinking about statues by approaching them through contemporary literary sources. It not only shows that ancient viewers conceived of images as more operative than aesthetic, but additionally reveals how poets and philosophers found in sculpture a practice ''good to think with.'' Deborah Tarn Steiner considers how Greek authors used images to ponder the relation of a copy to an original and of external appearance to inner reality. For these writers, a sculpture could straddle life and death, encode desire, or occasion reflection on their own act of producing a text. Many of the same sources also reveal how thinking about statues was reflected in the objects' everyday treatment. Viewing representations of gods and heroes as vessels hosting a living force, worshippers ritually washed, clothed, and fed them in order to elicit the numinous presence within. By reading the plastic and verbal sources together, this book offers new insights into classical texts while illuminating the practices surrounding the design, manufacture, and deployment of ancient images. Its argument that images are properly objects of cultural and social--rather than purely aesthetic--study will attract art historians, cultural historians, and anthropologists, as well as classicists

    Die "Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie" urteilte 1904 über den Dichter, Journalisten und Historiker Gustav Freytag (1816-1895), dieser sei "in seiner Gesammterscheinung als deutscher Schriftsteller […] zeitgemäß und namhaft wie kein anderer". Freytag galt lange als der deutsche Nationaldichter. Die Bedeutung, die ihm von seinen Zeitgenossen und bis weit hinein ins 20. Jahrhundert zugeschrieben wurde, gründet sich in erster Linie auf seine nachmärzlichen Erfolgswerke "Die Journalisten" (1852) und "Soll und Haben" (1855) sowie auf seine Rolle als literaturpolitisch wirkmächtiger Mitherausgeber der Zeitschrift "Die Grenzboten". Ausgehend von Freytags ‚Hauptwerk‘ nimmt die Studie zum einen das Gesamtwerk des Autors, zum anderen charakteristische Kontexte und Konstellationen der Epoche des Realismus in den Blick. Die Arbeit profiliert Freytag als Schlüsselgestalt für die Etablierung des literarischen Realismus nach 1848 und kontextualisiert seine Texte umfassend. Sie verfolgt dabei einen streng historisierenden und quellenzentrierten Ansatz, der politik-, sozial- oder auch presse- und gattungshistorische Interessen mit kanonisierungs-, rezeptionsgeschichtlichen sowie feldtheoretischen Zugängen verknüpft.

    Die Konjunktur des Politischen in neueren Kinofilmen und Fernsehserien ist mit tradierten Oppositionen – wie der von Inhalt und Form – nicht mehr zu beschreiben. Vielmehr lässt sich konstatieren, dass Theorie und Praxis des Politischen längst mit filmischen Fiktionen verflochten sind: Diese vermitteln zwischen universalen und partikularen Perspektiven, entwerfen Figurentypen und Verhaltensmuster und intervenieren in aktuelle Diskurse. Ein neuer "medialer Realismus", der diese Unhintergehbarkeit der Medien selbst sichtbar macht, bildet den thematischen Horizont der Beiträge dieses Sammelbands. Unter den Aspekten des Affizierens, Modellierens und Tradierens werden die theoretischen und ästhetischen Neuansätze des aktuellen politischen Kinos anhand einschlägiger Beispiele diskutiert.

    Der Dokumentationsband des Symposiums »Literatur in der neuen Klassengesellschaft« enthält Texte und Debattenbeiträge u.a. von Hans-Jürgen Urban, Christoph Butterwegge, Klaus Dörre, Annett Gröschner, Joachim Helfer, Stefanie Hürtgen, Cornelia Koppetsch, Norbert Niemann, Monika Rinck, David Salomon, Stefan Schmitzer, Erasmus Schöfer, Ingar Solty, Enno Stahl und Michael Wildenhain. Er dokumentiert – quasi in Echtzeit – den Ablauf des Symposiums, das durch einen ungewöhnlich barrierefreien Zugang des Publikums zum Tagungsgeschehen gekennzeichnet war. Das Netzwerk »Richtige Literatur im Falschen«, das diese Veranstaltung zum vierten Mal in dieser Form realisierte, versteht sich als offenes Diskussionsforum. Diskutiert wird in diesem Band die Frage, ob Deutschland heute wieder eine Klassengesellschaft ist, was die meisten der Autorinnen und Autoren bejahen. Die Auswirkungen dieser sozialen Spaltung werden aus verschiedenen Perspektiven betrachtet: der Pauperisierung, der Geschlechterproblematik und der Migration. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden sodann Überlegungen angestellt, ob Literatur auf die gesellschaftlichen Verwerfungen reagieren sollte oder gar muss – und wenn ja, in welcher Form.

    Eine soziale Wissenschaftstheorie schlägt einen Ausweg aus den aktuellen Kontroversen in der Wissenschaftsforschung vor, der erfordert: a) den nicht unabhängigen Charakter der Wissenschaftsphilosophie anzuerkennen; b) den erkenntnistheoretischen Status der Naturwissenschaften als einziges Erkenntnisideal zu überdenken; c) sich auf der Suche nach einer neuen methodischen Erfahrungauf die Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften zu konzentrieren; d) aufzuhören, Fallstudien als Version der ‚neutralen Sprache der Beobachtung‘ oder als ‚entscheidende Rechtfertigung‘ einer Theorie zu betrachten; und e) die Erklärungskraft der lokalen Kontextualisierung mit der Projektion und Konstruktion zukünftiger Wirkungskontexte wissenschaftlicher Ideen zu verbinden. Die Hinwendung zur Sozialität ordnet die Wissenschaftsforschung keiner Doktrin unter; sie ist vielmehr ein ökumenischer Appell zur Maximierung philosophischer Sensibilität und Offenheit. A social philosophy of science proposes a way out of current controversies in scientific research that requires: a) acknowledging the non-independent character of the philosophy of science; b) reconsidering the epistemological status of the natural sciences as the only ideal of knowledge; c) focusing on the social sciences and the humanities in search of a new methodological experience; d) ceasing to consider case studies as a version of the ‘neutral language of observation’ or as a ‘crucial justification’ of a theory; and e) combining the explanatory power of local contextualisation with the projection and construction of future contexts of the impact of scientific ideas. The shift towards sociality does not subordinate science studies to any doctrine; it is rather an ecumenical appeal to maximise philosophical sensitivity and openness.

As our popular understanding of "gamer" shifts beyond its historical construction as a white, straight, adolescent, cisgender male, the troubles that emerge both confirm and challenge our understanding of identity politics. In Gamer Trouble, Amanda Phillips excavates the turbulent relationships between surface and depth in contemporary gaming culture, taking readers under the hood of the mechanisms of video games in order to understand the ways that difference gets baked into its technological, ludic, ideological, and social systems.By centering the insights of queer and women of color feminisms in readings of online harassment campaigns, industry animation practices, and popular video games like Portal and Mass Effect, Phillips adds essential analytical tools to our conversations about video games. She embraces the trouble that attends disciplinary crossroads, linking the violent hate speech of trolls and the representational practices marginalizing people of color, women, and queers in entertainment media to the dehumanizing logic undergirding computation and the optimization strategies of gameplay. From the microcosmic level of electricity and flicks of a thumb to the grand stages of identity politics and global capitalism, wherever gamers find themselves, gamer trouble follows.     Abstrakte Gegenständlichkeit zeigt im Rahmen einer Detailanalyse der späten Texte Adalbert Stifters, wie die gesellschaftliche Realität in diese Texte eingeht, trotz deren Artifizialität. In Stifters Werk kommt der Gegenständlichkeit eine zentrale Rolle zu, die in seinen Texten aus der zweiten Hälfte der 1860er-Jahre zunehmend problematisch wird. Sie zeichnet sich durch die weitgehende Abwesenheit von Beschreibung aus, die sich teils zur bloßen Aufzählung von Namen und Begriffen steigert. Diese abstrakte gegenständliche Ordnung geht aber nicht in einem innersprachlichen Netz der Signifikanten auf. Wenn auch nicht auf einen konkret abgebildeten Gegenstand, so verweist sie doch auf die Form gegenständlicher Wahrnehmung. Diese Form der Wahrnehmung wiederum – hier bezieht sich die Arbeit etwa auf Theodor W. Adorno – ist vermittelt mit gesellschaftlicher Praxis.
