    Wer in der Moderne von Abenteuern erzählt, setzt sich dem Verdacht der Trivialität aus. Doch ein stillschweigender Verzicht aufs Abenteuer fällt auch kanonischen Autoren der Moderne schwer. Der Sammelband nimmt diese Beobachtung zum Anlass einer Spurensuche. Er geht dem Verbleib des Abenteuers in literarischen und theoretischen Texten der Moderne nach. Neben klassischen Abenteuerautoren, wie Karl May oder Rider Haggard, stehen Texte von Goethe, Virginia Woolf, Marcel Proust u.a. im Fokus, welche das Abenteuer in einem Spannungsfeld von Integration und Zurückweisung situieren. Darüber hinaus widmet sich der Band der Bedeutung des Abenteuers im kolonialen Diskurs, in der Psychoanalyse und im Russischen Formalismus.

    "Has Scotland suffered from colonial oppression by England for the last 300 years? While historiography may give an answer in the negative,

    this study reveals that the contemporary Scottish novel is

    haunted by strong feelings, marked by perceptions of abjection and

    inferiorisation in response to constructing the English as dominating.

    Drawing from an unprecedented corpus of contemporary Scottish

    novels, this study explores the postcolonial in Scottish fiction in

    order to investigate the underlying discursive power relations that

    shape the Scottish literary imagination. The study consequently

    demonstrates that the analysis of Scottish national identity profits

    from this new angle of interpretation of the Scottish novel as postcolonial.

    The analysis of discourses such as those of gender, class,

    space and place, and race reveals how the construction of the Scottish

    as marginalised permeates the width of the contemporary Scottish

    novel, by referring to diverse examples, such as James Kelman’s

    How late it was, how late or genre fiction such as Ian Rankin’s Set in

    Darkness. Thus, this study provides an insightful reading in the wake

    of current political developments such as the Scottish independence

    referendum."

    In Allegories of the Anthropocene Elizabeth M. DeLoughrey traces how indigenous and postcolonial peoples in the Caribbean and Pacific Islands grapple with the enormity of colonialism and anthropogenic climate change through art, poetry, and literature. In these works, authors and artists use allegory as a means to understand the multiscalar complexities of the Anthropocene and to critique the violence of capitalism, militarism, and the postcolonial state. DeLoughrey examines the work of a wide range of artists and writers—including poets Kamau Brathwaite and Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner, Dominican installation artist Tony Capellán, and authors Keri Hulme and Erna Brodber—whose work addresses Caribbean plantations, irradiated Pacific atolls, global flows of waste, and allegorical representations of the ocean and the island. In examining how island writers and artists address the experience of finding themselves at the forefront of the existential threat posed by climate change, DeLoughrey demonstrates how the Anthropocene and empire are mutually constitutive and establishes the vital importance of  allegorical art and literature in understanding our global environmental crisis.

    This study offers a literary history of the war novel in Africa. Coundouriotis argues that this genre, aimed more specifically at African readers than the continent’s better-known bildungsroman tradition, nevertheless makes an important intervention in global understandings of human rights.The African war novel lies at the convergence of two sensibilities it encounters in European traditions: the naturalist aesthetic and the discourse of humanitarianism, whether in the form of sentimentalism or of human rights law. Both these sensibilities are present in culturally hybrid forms in the African war novel, reflecting its syncretism as a narrative practice engaged with the colonial and postcolonial history of the continent.The war novel, Coundouriotis argues, stakes claims to collective rights that contrast with the individualism of the bildungsroman tradition. The genre is a form of people’s history that participates in a political struggle for the rights of the dispossessed

    In Flesh and Fish Blood Subramanian Shankar breaks new ground in postcolonial studies by exploring the rich potential of vernacular literary expressions. Shankar pushes beyond the postcolonial Anglophone canon and works with Indian literature and film in English, Tamil, and Hindi to present one of the first extended explorations of representations of caste, including a critical consideration of Tamil Dalit (so-called untouchable) literature. Shankar shows how these vernacular materials are often unexpectedly politically progressive and feminist, and provides insight on these oft-overlooked—but nonetheless sophisticated—South Asian cultural spaces. With its calls for renewed attention to translation issues and comparative methods in uncovering disregarded aspects of postcolonial societies, and provocative remarks on humanism and cosmopolitanism, Flesh and Fish Blood opens up new horizons of theoretical possibility for postcolonial studies and cultural analysis

    Achille Mbembe is one of the most brilliant theorists of postcolonial studies writing today. In On the Postcolony he profoundly renews our understanding of power and subjectivity in Africa. In a series of provocative essays, Mbembe contests diehard Africanist and nativist perspectives as well as some of the key assumptions of postcolonial theory.     Foucaults diskurstheoretischer Ansatz hat die Auffassungen von Aufklärung und Humanismus, von Wissenschaft und Rationalität, von Wahrheit und Ethos den Prozeduren des einen Diskurses unterworfen. Das hat für kräftige Debatten über das Verhältnis von Normativität und Historizität gesorgt. Der Beitrag zeigt, inwieweit Foucaults Ansatz auf der Basis sowie als Konsequenz der kritischen Philosophie Kants erarbeitet worden ist. Diskurstheorie beruht als Aufklärungsprojekt nicht auf normativen Voraussetzungen einer vermeintlich historisch greifbaren und im Kern einheitlichen Aufklärung, sondern verortet sich im "Zeitalter der Kritik", in dem bei der Suche nach Erkenntnis immer nach den Grenzen von Erkenntnis und von Erfahrung gefragt wird: Rationale Deutungsansprüche werden streng in ihren historischen Kontexten betrachtet. Aus dieser Perspektive wird das Verhältnis Kant-Swedenborg-Oetinger betrachtet. Dabei wird deutlich, dass weiterführende Überlegungen aus den postcolonial studies, insbesondere Homi K. Bhabhas, zu noch schärferen Einsichten in die diskursiven Aushandlungsprozeduren und rezeptionellen Verhältnisse zwischen vermeintlich radikal gegensätzlichen Lehren und Personen gelangen. Auf das Verhältnis von Historiographie und Geschichtsphilosophie fällt im Sinne von Aufklärung als eines ethischen Projekts neues Licht.

    Religion hat in den letzten Jahren in Öffentlichkeit und Forschung wieder verstärkt Beachtung gefunden. Und obwohl die religiöse Landschaft äußerst heterogen ist, betrachten religionssoziologische Studien ihren Gegenstand gegenwärtig hauptsächlich als individualisierte Sozialform. Anna Daniel überwindet diese theoretischen, narrativen und disziplinären Engführungen und untersucht mithilfe eines postkolonialen Analyseansatzes die Grenzziehungen des religionssoziologischen Diskurses.     Wer in der Moderne von Abenteuern erzählt, setzt sich dem Verdacht der Trivialität aus. Doch ein stillschweigender Verzicht aufs Abenteuer fällt auch kanonischen Autoren der Moderne schwer. Der Sammelband nimmt diese Beobachtung zum Anlass einer Spurensuche. Er geht dem Verbleib des Abenteuers in literarischen und theoretischen Texten der Moderne nach. Neben klassischen Abenteuerautoren, wie Karl May oder Rider Haggard, stehen Texte von Goethe, Virginia Woolf, Marcel Proust u.a. im Fokus, welche das Abenteuer in einem Spannungsfeld von Integration und Zurückweisung situieren. Darüber hinaus widmet sich der Band der Bedeutung des Abenteuers im kolonialen Diskurs, in der Psychoanalyse und im Russischen Formalismus

    This study offers a literary history of the war novel in Africa. Coundouriotis argues that this genre, aimed more specifically at African readers than the continent’s better-known bildungsroman tradition, nevertheless makes an important intervention in global understandings of human rights.The African war novel lies at the convergence of two sensibilities it encounters in European traditions: the naturalist aesthetic and the discourse of humanitarianism, whether in the form of sentimentalism or of human rights law. Both these sensibilities are present in culturally hybrid forms in the African war novel, reflecting its syncretism as a narrative practice engaged with the colonial and postcolonial history of the continent.The war novel, Coundouriotis argues, stakes claims to collective rights that contrast with the individualism of the bildungsroman tradition. The genre is a form of people’s history that participates in a political struggle for the rights of the dispossessed

    Wer in der Moderne von Abenteuern erzählt, setzt sich dem Verdacht der Trivialität aus. Doch ein stillschweigender Verzicht aufs Abenteuer fällt auch kanonischen Autoren der Moderne schwer. Der Sammelband nimmt diese Beobachtung zum Anlass einer Spurensuche. Er geht dem Verbleib des Abenteuers in literarischen und theoretischen Texten der Moderne nach. Neben klassischen Abenteuerautoren, wie Karl May oder Rider Haggard, stehen Texte von Goethe, Virginia Woolf, Marcel Proust u.a. im Fokus, welche das Abenteuer in einem Spannungsfeld von Integration und Zurückweisung situieren. Darüber hinaus widmet sich der Band der Bedeutung des Abenteuers im kolonialen Diskurs, in der Psychoanalyse und im Russischen Formalismus
