    Dieser Band widmet sich der „internationalen Gemeinschaft“. Dabei fragt er nicht nach deren Faktizität, sondern rekonstruiert die politische Bedeutung des Begriffs, der regelmäßig und in wirkmächtiger Weise zur Deutung internationaler Politik verwendet wird. Mit einem textanalytischen Instrumentarium, das in der pragmatistischen Sozialtheorie verankert ist, werden exemplarisch drei Reden prominenter europäischer Politiker in hermeneutischen Feinanalysen untersucht. Die Ergebnisse verweisen auf einen Doppelcharakter des Begriffs: Er ist einerseits offen genug, um unterschiedliche Entwürfe einer gerechten Globalordnung zu transportieren; andererseits ermöglicht er es, analog einer Währung, Legitimität für gegensätzliche politische Zielsetzungen zu „erkaufen“. This volume deals with the ‘international community’. Instead of asking for its factual existence, however, it reconstructs the political meaning of the concept itself, which is used regularly and quite effectively in the interpretation of international politics. Using a hermeneutical approach rooted in pragmatist social theory, it examines three speeches by prominent European political leaders in detail. The results point out the dual character of the concept: on the one hand, it is open enough to convey different conceptions of a just global order; on the other hand, analogously to a currency, it allows legitimacy for contrary political purposes to be ‘bought’.

    In Zeiten der Globalisierung und der Entgrenzung und Infragestellung staatlicher Souveränität erhält die Frage nach der Legitimität des Staates besondere Brisanz. Wenn Macht durch das Konzept der Legitimität in gerechtfertigte Herrschaft überführt werden soll, bedarf die Legitimität als solche genauer Betrachtung. Dabei ist nicht nur zu fragen, worauf die Anerkennung einer Rechtsordnung beruht, sondern auch, wie ihre Anerkennungswürdigkeit begründet werden kann. Die Vielschichtigkeit des Legitimitätsbegriffs legt es dabei nahe, ihn aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven zu betrachten und diese Perspektiven zu einem möglichst umfassenden Gesamtbild zusammenzufügen. Das Spektrum der an diesem Band beteiligten Disziplinen umfasst die Ethnologie, die Psychologie, die Rechtswissenschaft, die Staatstheorie, die Politikwissenschaft und die Philosophie. Er gliedert sich in folgende thematische Blöcke: Empirische Zugänge, Sozialwissenschaftliche Zugänge, Theoretische Zugänge und Entwicklungsfragen. If power is to be transformed into justified rule through the concept of legitimacy, legitimacy as such requires close examination. In this context, it is not only necessary to ask what the recognition of a legal system is based on, but also how its recognition can be justified. The complexity of the concept of legitimacy suggests that it should be considered from different perspectives and that these perspectives should be combined to form a comprehensive overall picture. The spectrum of disciplines involved in this volume includes ethnology, psychology, law, state theory, political science and philosophy.     What is the role of monumentality, verticality and centrality in the twenty-first century? Are palaces, skyscrapers and grand urban ensembles obsolete relics of twentieth-century modernity, inexorably giving way to a more humble and sustainable de-centred urban age? Or do the aesthetics and politics of pomp and grandiosity rather linger and even prosper in the cities of today and tomorrow?

    Re-Centring the City zooms in on these questions, taking as its point of departure the experience of Eurasian socialist cities, where twentieth-century high modernity arguably saw its most radical and furthest-reaching realisation. It frames the experience of global high modernity (and its unravelling) through the eyes of the socialist city, rather than the other way around: instead of explaining Warsaw or Moscow through the prism of Paris or New York, it refracts London, Mexico City and Chennai through the lens of Kyiv, Simferopol and the former Polish shtetls. This transdisciplinary volume re-centres the experiences of the ‘Global East’, and thereby our understanding of world urbanism, by shedding light on some of the still-extant (and often disavowed) forms of ‘zombie’ centrality, hierarchy and violence that pervade and shape our contemporary urban experience.

    Traditionally, the Netherlands has enjoyed being a test market for many ideas in the media. But over the last decade, progress has been severely hampered by lengthy discussions on the future structure of just one sector of media, namely public broadcasting via radio and television. The narrow approach results in a lot of paper, speeches and theories, but little in the way of definitive policy making. In a report to the government, published in February 2005, the Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR) argued for very different approaches to policy making. The recommendations are not only much broader than "broadcasting"; they tackle the challenges of making robust policy from new angles. Instead of trying to repair the old compass, the approach has been to find new instruments to help policymakers navigate the stormy and often confusing waters ahead. Perhaps the problem in the Netherlands is not accepting the new media, but rather accepting that the role "old" media has undergone a paradigm shift. Since the bulk of the WRR findings were published in the Dutch language, this summary is intended to provide readers outside the Netherlands with an insight into the issues at stake - and the solutions suggested by the WRR.     Central Peripheries explores post-Soviet Central Asia through the prism of nation-building. Although relative latecomers on the international scene, the Central Asian states see themselves as globalized, and yet in spite of – or perhaps precisely because of – this, they hold a very classical vision of the nation-state, rejecting the abolition of boundaries and the theory of the ‘death of the nation’. Their unabashed celebration of very classical nationhoods built on post-modern premises challenges the Western view of nationalism as a dying ideology that ought to have been transcended by post-national cosmopolitanism. Marlene Laruelle looks at how states in the region have been navigating the construction of a nation in a post-imperial context where Russia remains the dominant power and cultural reference. She takes into consideration the ways in which the Soviet past has influenced the construction of national storylines, as well as the diversity of each state’s narratives and use of symbolic politics. Exploring state discourses, academic narratives and different forms of popular nationalist storytelling allows Laruelle to depict the complex construction of the national pantheon in the three decades since independence. The second half of the book focuses on Kazakhstan as the most hybrid national construction and a unique case study of nationhood in Eurasia. Based on the principle that only multidisciplinarity can help us to untangle the puzzle of nationhood, Central Peripheries uses mixed methods, combining political science, intellectual history, sociology and cultural anthropology. The expulsion from the Garden of Eden can be understood as a punishment for the consumption of the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge, but it can likewise be interpreted as the perfection of God’s creation. Hence only beyond Eden, God’s creature becomes man. He or she becomes human by cultivat-ing the earth, by working. Labour is not only a necessary evil in order to secure existence, nor does it serve as a means for self-preservation, but also for self-fulfillment. Labour is the epitome of the ability of self-being and thus of man’s liberty. Mögen wir Arbeit als Fluch betrachten oder als Segen – das Sein des Menschen ist ohne Arbeit nicht denkbar. Man kann die Vertreibung aus dem Garten Eden als Strafe für den unerlaubten Genuss der Frucht vom Baume der Erkenntnis ver-stehen, man kann sie aber auch als Vollendung der göttlichen Schöpfung deuten. Denn erst jenseits von Eden wird das Geschöpf Gottes Mensch. Er wird Mensch, indem er die Erde bebaut, indem er arbeitet.     In this wide-ranging study of Japanese cultural expression, Alan Tansman reveals how a particular, often seemingly innocent aesthetic sensibility—present in novels, essays, popular songs, film, and political writings—helped create an "aesthetic of fascism" in the years leading up to World War II. Evoking beautiful moments of violence, both real and imagined, these works did not lead to fascism in any instrumental sense. Yet, Tansman suggests, they expressed and inspired spiritual longings quenchable only through acts in the real world.     Dieser Band widmet sich der „internationalen Gemeinschaft“. Dabei fragt er nicht nach deren Faktizität, sondern rekonstruiert die politische Bedeutung des Begriffs, der regelmäßig und in wirkmächtiger Weise zur Deutung internationaler Politik verwendet wird. Mit einem textanalytischen Instrumentarium, das in der pragmatistischen Sozialtheorie verankert ist, werden exemplarisch drei Reden prominenter europäischer Politiker in hermeneutischen Feinanalysen untersucht. Die Ergebnisse verweisen auf einen Doppelcharakter des Begriffs: Er ist einerseits offen genug, um unterschiedliche Entwürfe einer gerechten Globalordnung zu transportieren; andererseits ermöglicht er es, analog einer Währung, Legitimität für gegensätzliche politische Zielsetzungen zu „erkaufen“. This volume deals with the ‘international community’. Instead of asking for its factual existence, however, it reconstructs the political meaning of the concept itself, which is used regularly and quite effectively in the interpretation of international politics. Using a hermeneutical approach rooted in pragmatist social theory, it examines three speeches by prominent European political leaders in detail. The results point out the dual character of the concept: on the one hand, it is open enough to convey different conceptions of a just global order; on the other hand, analogously to a currency, it allows legitimacy for contrary political purposes to be ‘bought’.
