    Unternehmen sollten auf Gewinnmaximierung verzichten, um Gewinne maximieren zu können. So lautet die paradoxe Anforderung, mit der Personen konfrontiert sind, die Unternehmen im System der Wirtschaft einer modernen Gesellschaft führen. Diesem Paradoxon kommt man durch die Rekonstruktion der Logik auf die Spur, die funktionierenden Märkten und funktionierenden Organisationen zugrunde liegt. Auf diesem Wege lassen sich zehn konstitutive Funktionen marktkonformer Führung identifizieren, die eindeutige und universell gültige Orientierungspunkte für die Führung von Organisationen in wettbewerblich strukturierten Marktwirtschaften markieren und deren Ausführung die Entfaltung und Bearbeitung des Paradoxons ermöglicht. Companies should refrain from maximizing profits in order to be able to maximize profits. This is the paradoxical requirement that confronts executives who run companies in the economic system of a modern society. This paradox can be traced by re constructing the logic underlying functioning markets and functioning organizations. In this way, ten fundamental functions of leadership can be identified, which illustrate guiding principles for leading organisations in competitive market economies and whose execution enables the paradox to be unfolded and dealt with.

    Michael Gorman’s ‘cruciformity’ concept (recently re-articulated as ‘resurrectional cruciformity’) is commonly used to interpret Paul’s paradox of strength in weakness (e.g., 2 Cor. 4:7, 12:9–10). However, Gorman never discusses the current conceptions of Pauline paradox. An analysis and summary of this literature – with reference to 2 Cor. 12:9–10 – reveals that Gorman’s approach fails to produce a technical articulation of paradox, largely due to its underdeveloped congruence between strength and weakness (cf., v. 9a, 10b). This leaves his work vulnerable to theological distortion, including masochism. In response, it is argued that ‘strength in weakness’ involves two opposed realities occurring simultaneously and mutually qualifying one another, without conflation or isolation – i.e., a coinherent paradox. This model offers a generative, rather than kenotic, reading of strength in weakness, in which the paradox increases human potential. It also offers connections with early Christology that set the paradox in a fresh theological frame.

    The poetry of Israeli émigré Igor' Guberman, comprising thousands of quatrains (‘gariki’), represents a hybrid genre at the junction of Jewish aphoristic tradition, Russian oral folklore, and classical Russian poetry. The theme of toska, which is central to the gariki, may be sharply distinguished from the ‘restorative nostalgia’ theorized by Svetlana Boym (2001): Guberman's toska is a thoughtful, melancholic, and paradoxical feeling. It expresses a particular variety of skepticism that characterizes the paradoxical humor of the Ashkenazi, the purpose of which is not to ridicule others' shortcomings, but to gently make fun of the sadness and painful absurdity that impermeates human existence. Such melancholic and paradoxical humor permits Guberman to look at life, at himself, even at God, with an indulgent ‘smile of reason’ that is absolutely devoid of arrogance. A subtle melancholic and deep skeptic, Guberman "laughs through his tears", for this is what Russian-Jewish tradition teaches, a lesson that has penetrated deeply and more generally into Russian literature: when the soul is beset by excessive sadness, its has recourse only to laughter.

    Vampire stories and folklores have originated from a range of sources; however, it is rather certain that the repulsive but attractive vampiric monster images in present popular culture are primarily derived from Anne Rice's novel Interview with the Vampire. That being said, it was around the end of the eighteenth century that vampires first invaded the popular literary world, with literary vampires growing noticeably more powerful and perpetual than any of their monstrous predecessors in the years since the publication of John Polidori's successful short story The Vampyre in 1819 (Punter and Byron 2004, 268). Due to associated aesthetic transformations, vampirism itself has become increasingly popular, to the extent that it now commands some followers who even worship vampiric rituals and lifestyles in spite of there being no solid, physical evidence of actual vampires, but rather only literary and imaginary examples of the creatures. In order to grasp how this fascination with vampires has turned into a quasi-religious phenomenon and ideology, a proper investigation of vampiric mechanisms and aesthetics should be empirical in nature. Utilizing Interview with the Vampire as an example due to its clearly substantial influence on current vampire imagery, this article examines how the paradoxical interchange between aversion and attraction plays its role in the visceral religion of the vampire-immersed world.
