    What makes an image offensive? — This question is addressed in this volume. It explores tensions and debates about offensive images and performative practices in various settings in and beyond Europe. Its basic premise is that a deeper understanding of what is at stake in these tensions and debates calls for a multidisciplinary conversation. The authors focus on images that appear to trigger strongly negative reactions; images that are perceived as insulting or offensive; those subject to taboos and restrictions; or those that are condemned as blasphemous. In light of recurrent acts of violence leveled against images and symbols in the contemporary, globally entangled world, addressing instances of “icono-clash” (Bruno Latour) from a new post-secular, global perspective has become a matter of urgency.

    Museum of Nonhumanity is the catalogue for a full-size touring museum that presents the history of the distinction between humans and animals, and the way that this artificial boundary has been used to oppress human and nonhuman beings over long historical periods. Throughout history, declaring a group to be nonhuman or subhuman has been an effective tool for justifying slavery, oppression, medical experimentation, genocide, and other forms of violence against those deemed “other.” Conversely, differentiating humans from other species has paved the way for the abuse of natural resources and other animals. Museum of Nonhumanity approaches animalization as a nexus that connects xenophobia, sexism, racism, transphobia, and the abuse of nature and other animals. The touring museum hosts lecture programs in which local civil rights and animal rights organizations, academics, artists, and activists propose paths to a more inclusive society through intersectional approaches. The museum also hosts a pop-up book shop and a vegan café. As a temporary, utopian institution, Museum of Nonhumanity stands as a monument to the call to make animalization history.

    In this series of intricately related texts, internationally known poet, critic, and performance artist David Antin explores the experience of time—how it's felt, remembered, and recounted. These free-form talk pieces—sometimes called talk poems or simply talks—began as improvisations at museums, universities, and poetry centers where Antin was invited to come and think out loud. Serious and playful, they move rapidly from keen analysis to powerful storytelling to passages of pure comedy, as they range kaleidoscopically across Antin's experiences: in the New York City of his childhood and youth, the Eastern Europe of family and friends, and the New York and Southern California of his art and literary career. The author's analysis and abrasive comedy have been described as a mix of Lenny Bruce and Ludwig Wittgenstein, his commitment to verbal invention and narrative as a fusion of Mark Twain and Gertrude Stein. Taken together, these pieces provide a rich oral history of and critical context for the evolution of the California art scene from the 1960s onward

März 2020 in den Räumen des Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) stattfand und sich erstmals umfassend und systematisch dem Thema 'Arthur Schnitzler und die bildende Kunst' widmete." (Vorwort) Arthur Schnitzlers Beziehungen zur bildenden Kunst werden in den vierzehn Beiträgen des vorliegenden Bandes erstmals systematisch und in quellenbasierten Spezialstudien untersucht. Zur Sprache kommen Schnitzlers Autorschaftsinszenierung in der Porträtkunst und -fotografie, seine ästhetischen Vorlieben im Erwerb von Kunstobjekten sowie auf Reisen und bei Museumsbesuchen, die Kunstbezüge und -zitate in Schnitzlers Erzählungen und Dramen sowie seine bedeutende Teilhabe an der Buchgestaltungskunst der Moderne. Sie reicht von produktiven Kooperationen mit namhaften zeitgenössischen Buch- und Umschlagkünstlern bis zu postumen bildkünstlerischen Adaptionen seines Werks in aktuellen Graphic novels. Mit Beiträgen von Achim Aurnhammer, Judith Becher, Judith Beniston, Barbara Beßlich, Eva Höfflin-Grether, Julia Ilgner, Nikolas Immer, Dieter Martin, Martin Anton Müller, Susanne Neubrand, Günther Schnitzler, Roland Stark, Reinhard Urbach, Ralf von den Hoff und Evi Zemanek. Arthur Schnitzler’s relationships to the visual arts are examined for the first time systematically and in source-based special studies in the fourteen articles in this volume. Schnitzler’s staging of authorship in portrait art and photography, his aesthetic preferences in the acquisition of art objects as well as on trips and during visits to museums, references to art and quotations in Schnitzler’s stories and dramas, and his significant participation in the art of book design of the modern age are discussed. It ranges from productive collaborations with well-known contemporary book and cover artists to posthumous visual art adaptations of his work in current graphic novels.     Today, nearly any group or nation with violence in its past has constructed or is planning a memorial museum as a mechanism for confronting past trauma, often together with truth commissions, trials, and/or other symbolic or material reparations. Exhibiting Atrocity documents the emergence of the memorial museum as a new cultural form of commemoration, and analyzes its use in efforts to come to terms with past political violence and to promote democracy and human rights. Through a global comparative approach, Amy Sodaro uses in-depth case studies of five exemplary memorial museums that commemorate a range of violent pasts and allow for a chronological and global examination of the trend: the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC; the House of Terror in Budapest, Hungary; the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre in Rwanda; the Museum of Memory and Human Rights in Santiago, Chile; and the National September 11 Memorial Museum in New York. Together, these case studies illustrate the historical emergence and global spread of the memorial museum and show how this new cultural form of commemoration is intended to be used in contemporary societies around the world.     We derive and empirically apply an input-oriented distance function based on the stochastic ray production function suggested by L¨othgren (1997, 2000). We show that the derived ray-based input distance function is suitable for modeling production technologies based on logarithmic functional forms (e.g., Cobb-Douglas and Translog) when control over inputs is greater than control over outputs and when some productive entities do not produce the entire set of outputs - two situations that are jointly present in various economic sectors. We also address a weakness of the stochastic ray function, namely its sensitivity to the outputs’ ordering, by using a model-selection approach and a model-averaging approach. We estimate a ray-based Translog input distance function with a data set of Danish museums. These museums have more control over their inputs than over their outputs, and many of them do not produce the entire set of outputs that is considered in our analysis. Given the importance of monotonicity conditions in efficiency analysis, we demonstrate how to impose monotonicity on ray-based input distance functions. As part of the empirical analysis, we estimate technical efficiencies, distance elasticities of the inputs and outputs, and scale elasticities and establish how the production frontier is affected by some environmental variables that are of interest to the museum sector.

It explores tensions and debates about offensive images and performative practices in various settings in and beyond Europe. Its basic premise is that a deeper understanding of what is at stake in these tensions and debates calls for a multidisciplinary conversation. The authors focus on images that appear to trigger strongly negative reactions; images that are perceived as insulting or offensive; those subject to taboos and restrictions; or those that are condemned as blasphemous.     In this dissertation, I build discussions around the use of digital technologies in association with art and art historical contexts to ask greater cultural heritage questions regarding humanity's relationship with digital technology. My work reflects on the emergence of digital humanities as a field in response to the experimentation and incorporation of digital methods, with an emphasis on extended reality (XR) technologies, for conducting humanities research in relation to arts and culture-based organizations. I investigate the advantages and disadvantages digital tools bring to the field of Art History today. In particular, the project focuses on modes of publishing, display, and information-capture in museums and archives that illustrate a break from "traditional" models. In doing so, I argue that digital modalities provide a distinctly different paradigm for epistemologies of art and culture. Extending previous research in museum studies and media studies, I address a selection of the latest technological interventions within museum and cultural heritage contexts that operate within a spectrum of immersive modalities and use extended reality technologies. The dissertation brings together many humanities disciplines to investigate how sharing XR within a museum both disrupts and complements the time-tested benefits of object-centered methods of display, representation, and education. The phase "virtual actualities" within the title of the dissertation signals changes in practice that are being brought about as digital technologies, and particularly XR, become incorporated into fields of arts and culture. "Actualities" connote the practical matters associated with producing, presenting, and preserving digitally immersive materials in the contexts of gallery, library, archive, and museum (GLAM) organizations. "Reality" in turn is reserved for the qualities perceived when discussing the characteristics that define 3D and XR production. At the fore in addressing new topics in museum practices and by conducting new experimentation through the application of immersive technologies, this dissertation can offer new information for digital art history, cultural heritage, and museum studies. The aggregation of examples throughout the dissertation aims to provide a survey of the field of XR in its current state within GLAM settings in order to offer insight and guidance for future development and implementation

    Im April 2015 eröffnete die Österreichische Nationalbibliothek ihr neues Literaturmuseum, das vierte der Bibliothek angeschlossene Museum im sogenannten „Grillparzerhaus“. Dort befindet sich heute noch das historische Büro Franz Grillparzers, der über zwei Jahrzehnte als Direktor das ehemalige k. k. Hofkammerarchiv geleitet hatte. Das Museum bietet in 45 thematischen und chronologischen Stationen einen multimedialen Rundgang durch die österreichische Literatur von der Aufklärung bis zur Gegenwart. Daneben wird es mit einem vielfältigen Veranstaltungsprogramm – und ab 2016 auch regelmäßigen Wechselausstellungen – als lebendiger Treffpunkt für ein literaturinteressiertes Publikum fungieren.

    What makes an image offensive? — This question is addressed in this volume. It explores tensions and debates about offensive images and performative practices in various settings in and beyond Europe. Its basic premise is that a deeper understanding of what is at stake in these tensions and debates calls for a multidisciplinary conversation. The authors focus on images that appear to trigger strongly negative reactions; images that are perceived as insulting or offensive; those subject to taboos and restrictions; or those that are condemned as blasphemous. In light of recurrent acts of violence leveled against images and symbols in the contemporary, globally entangled world, addressing instances of “icono-clash” (Bruno Latour) from a new post-secular, global perspective has become a matter of urgency.

(Vorwort) Arthur Schnitzlers Beziehungen zur bildenden Kunst werden in den vierzehn Beiträgen des vorliegenden Bandes erstmals systematisch und in quellenbasierten Spezialstudien untersucht. Zur Sprache kommen Schnitzlers Autorschaftsinszenierung in der Porträtkunst und -fotografie, seine ästhetischen Vorlieben im Erwerb von Kunstobjekten sowie auf Reisen und bei Museumsbesuchen, die Kunstbezüge und -zitate in Schnitzlers Erzählungen und Dramen sowie seine bedeutende Teilhabe an der Buchgestaltungskunst der Moderne. Sie reicht von produktiven Kooperationen mit namhaften zeitgenössischen Buch- und Umschlagkünstlern bis zu postumen bildkünstlerischen Adaptionen seines Werks in aktuellen Graphic novels. Arthur Schnitzler’s relationships to the visual arts are examined for the first time systematically and in source-based special studies in the fourteen articles in this volume. Schnitzler’s staging of authorship in portrait art and photography, his aesthetic preferences in the acquisition of art objects as well as on trips and during visits to museums, references to art and quotations in Schnitzler’s stories and dramas, and his significant participation in the art of book design of the modern age are discussed. It ranges from productive collaborations with well-known contemporary book and cover artists to posthumous visual art adaptations of his work in current graphic novels. The relationship between literature and exhibiting has generally been dealt with by looking at the issue of the whether or not it is possible to exhibit the literary. Exhibiting as a literary dispositif has been subject to much less inquiry. This volume brings together open, interdisciplinary approaches that take a twofold perspective on literary and exhibition practices, examining the interplay between exhibitions, museums, and literature.
