    This book shows how vernacular communities commemorate their traumatic experiences of the Second World War. Despite having access to many diverse memory frameworks typical of late modernity, these communities primarily function within religious memory frameworks. The book also traces how they reacted when their local histories were incorporated into the remembrance practices of the state. The authors draw on case studies of four vernacular communities, notably Kałków-Godów, Michniów, Jedwabne and Markowa, to argue that it is still possible in the Polish countryside to discover milieux de mémoire. At the same time, they show that the state not only uses local histories to bolster its moral capital in the international arena, but also in matters of domestic policy.

    The pictorial narrative of the Boer pioneers who conquered South Africa’s interior during the ‘Great Trek’ (1835-52) represents a crucial period of South Africa’s past. Forming the concept of the frieze both reflected on and contributed to the country’s socio-political debates in the 1930s and 1940s when it was made. The frieze is unique in that it provides rare evidence of the complex processes followed in creating a major monument. Based on unpublished documents, drawings and models, these processes are unfolded step by step, from the earliest discussions of the purpose and content of the frieze through all the stages of its design to its shipping to post-war Italy to be copied into marble and final installation in the Monument. The book examines how visual representation transforms historical memory in what it chooses to recount, and the forms in which it depicts this. It also investigates the active role the Monument played in the development of apartheid, and its place in post-apartheid heritage.

    An investigation into the spatial politics of separation and division in South Africa, principally during the apartheid years, and the effects of these physical and conceptual barriers on the land. In contrast to the weight of literature focusing on post-apartheid South Africa, the focus of this book includes the spatial, political and cultural landscape practices of the apartheid government and also refers to contemporary work done in Australia, England and the US. It probes the uncertainty and ambiguity of identities and cultures in post-apartheid society in order to gain a deep understanding of the history that individuals and society now confront. Drawing on a wealth of research materials including literature, maps, newspapers, monuments, architectural drawings, government legislation, tourist brochures, political writing and oral histories, this book is well illustrated throughout and is a unique commentary on the spatial politics of a time of enormous change.

    This book relates developments in the visual arts and printing to humanist theories of literary and bodily imitation, bringing together fifteenth- and sixteenth-century frescoes, statues, coins, letters, dialogues, epic poems, personal emblems, and printed collections of portraits. Its interdisciplinary analyses show that Renaissance theories of emulating classical heroes generated a deep skepticism about self-presentation, ultimately contributing to a new awareness of representation as representation.Hollow Men shows that the Renaissance questioning of "interiority" derived from a visual ideal, the monument that was the basis of teachings about imitation. In fact, the decline of exemplary pedagogy and the emergence of modern masculine subjectivity were well underway in the mid–fifteenth century, and these changes were hastened by the rapid development of the printed image

    National wertvolle Kulturgüter verkörpern Aspekte unserer Kultur und Geschichte. Das KGSG regelt ihre Unterschutzstellung und die daran anknüpfenden Rechtsfolgen, etwa dass sie grundsätzlich nicht mehr dauerhaft ins Ausland ausgeführt werden dürfen. Gegenstand der Untersuchung ist das Listenprinzip, das für die Bestimmung national wertvoller Kulturgüter maßgeblich ist. Durch den Eintrag in ein Verzeichnis unterfallen sie den Schutzbestimmungen. Die Arbeit setzt sich mit der Frage auseinander, welche Kriterien ein Kulturgut erfüllen muss, damit es Eingang in ein solches Verzeichnis findet. Auf dieser Grundlage erarbeitet die Studie Kriterien für die Praxis. Sie ist als Beitrag für Rechtsanwender aus Exekutive und Judikative, aber auch für Normadressaten (z.B. private Eigentümer von Kulturgut) zu verstehen. Nationally valuable cultural goods embody aspects of our culture and history. The Cultural Property Protection Act regulates their protection and the associated legal consequences, such as the fact that they may no longer be permanently exported abroad. The subject of the study is the list principle, which is decisive for the determination of nationally valuable cultural goods. By being entered in a list, they are subject to the protection provisions. The study deals with the question of which criteria a cultural good must fulfill in order to be included in such a list. On this basis, the work develops criteria for legal practice. It is to be understood as a contribution for legal practitioners from the executive and judiciary, but also for norm addressees, e.g. private owners of cultural property.

    National wertvolle Kulturgüter verkörpern Aspekte unserer Kultur und Geschichte. Das KGSG regelt ihre Unterschutzstellung und die daran anknüpfenden Rechtsfolgen, etwa dass sie grundsätzlich nicht mehr dauerhaft ins Ausland ausgeführt werden dürfen. Gegenstand der Untersuchung ist das Listenprinzip, das für die Bestimmung national wertvoller Kulturgüter maßgeblich ist. Durch den Eintrag in ein Verzeichnis unterfallen sie den Schutzbestimmungen. Die Arbeit setzt sich mit der Frage auseinander, welche Kriterien ein Kulturgut erfüllen muss, damit es Eingang in ein solches Verzeichnis findet. Auf dieser Grundlage erarbeitet die Studie Kriterien für die Praxis. Sie ist als Beitrag für Rechtsanwender aus Exekutive und Judikative, aber auch für Normadressaten (z.B. private Eigentümer von Kulturgut) zu verstehen. Nationally valuable cultural goods embody aspects of our culture and history. The Cultural Property Protection Act regulates their protection and the associated legal consequences, such as the fact that they may no longer be permanently exported abroad. The subject of the study is the list principle, which is decisive for the determination of nationally valuable cultural goods. By being entered in a list, they are subject to the protection provisions. The study deals with the question of which criteria a cultural good must fulfill in order to be included in such a list. On this basis, the work develops criteria for legal practice. It is to be understood as a contribution for legal practitioners from the executive and judiciary, but also for norm addressees, e.g. private owners of cultural property.

    An investigation into the spatial politics of separation and division in South Africa, principally during the apartheid years, and the effects of these physical and conceptual barriers on the land. In contrast to the weight of literature focusing on post-apartheid South Africa, the focus of this book includes the spatial, political and cultural landscape practices of the apartheid government and also refers to contemporary work done in Australia, England and the US. It probes the uncertainty and ambiguity of identities and cultures in post-apartheid society in order to gain a deep understanding of the history that individuals and society now confront. Drawing on a wealth of research materials including literature, maps, newspapers, monuments, architectural drawings, government legislation, tourist brochures, political writing and oral histories, this book is well illustrated throughout and is a unique commentary on the spatial politics of a time of enormous change.
